Every application season, students and parents treat the QS World University Rankings as the single yardstick for choosing a university. QS runs two separate tools. The World University Rankings compare institutions and place them in order, while QS Stars works as an audit that rates a university against global standards covering teaching, employability, governance and facilities. This article sets out how the two systems differ, how stars are awarded, and how A-Level applicants can use a rating alongside course entry requirements.
QS Stars launched in 2009, and according to QS's own methodology document, version 6.0 published in 2024, more than 700 institutions have now been evaluated. The key difference is that it does not rank universities against one another. QS states the split plainly: a ranking shows who has performed best, while a rating shows who is good at what. Participation is opt-in, so there is no cap on how many institutions can take part, and a university with a modest global profile can still earn five stars for teaching, facilities or career support. Results come in two layers. There is an overall badge from one star to five plus stars, and there is a star rating for each individual category.
How Points Become Stars
A standard audit covers the mandatory categories plus two elective ones the institution chooses, producing ratings in at least nine categories and an overall result. The mandatory areas are teaching, facilities or online learning, social or environmental impact, research or academic development, global engagement, employability and good governance. Points are scaled from indicators. In the 150-point categories such as teaching, employability and research, five stars requires 105 points, while the 100-point categories such as facilities and governance need 70 points for five stars. The overall badge is harder to reach. Seven hundred points is the floor for five stars, and the prerequisites include 105 points in teaching, 85 points in employability, and at least five per cent international faculty and international students. Only 900 points with five stars in every category reaches five plus stars. Universities submit the data, and QS assigns a dedicated analyst who validates third-party evidence.
The QS World University Rankings 2026 edition was released in June 2025 and covers 1,504 institutions across 105 countries and regions. Nine indicators feed the score. Academic reputation carries 30 per cent and employer reputation 15 per cent, so survey opinion supplies 45 per cent of the total, close to half. Citations per faculty take 20 per cent and the faculty-student ratio 10 per cent, while international faculty, international students, international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability take 5 per cent each. That is the practical difference between the two tools. A ranking is a snapshot of global visibility and research scale, whereas a rating is closer to a health check on specific dimensions. QS noted in a November 2025 article that 58 per cent of students polled said they would consider a lower-ranked university that performs strongly in the areas they care about.
For A-Level applicants, four categories deserve the closest look. Teaching covers the faculty-student ratio, student satisfaction, completion and progression to further study, which indicates how much attention you are likely to receive. Employability covers employer reputation, graduate outcomes and career services, and it matters most if you plan to work or take internships soon after graduation. Global engagement covers international faculty and students plus exchange programmes, and it shapes whether you get a genuine overseas experience. Facilities or online learning covers accommodation, library spending, sport facilities and the support behind online delivery. One detail students often miss is that these are institution-wide averages, and the specific course you apply for may sit above or below that average.
Requirements First, Stars Second
In practice the order runs from official requirements, to star categories, to visibility. Start with UCAS and the entry requirements published for each course, and check that your A-Level subjects and predicted grades fall inside the range. UCAS allows up to five course choices, and for 2027 entry the main equal consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, with 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. Once the requirements line up, return to QS Stars and check whether its category stars sit in the areas you actually care about. If internships and career services matter to you, compare employability carefully. Treat global visibility as the last filter, because rankings mostly shape first impressions when you later apply for jobs or postgraduate study.
Five Stars Is Not a Trophy
The common mistake is reading five stars as the best university overall. A star rating is a self-referenced audit. An institution with five plus stars has met the five-star standard in every category, but that does not make it a better fit for you than a four-star institution. A second error is treating an institutional rating as subject strength. Ratings are given at institution and category level rather than per degree programme, and only the elective subject ranking category signals an institution's strongest subject area and its accreditations. Remember too that participation is voluntary, so a university with no stars may simply have chosen not to be assessed. Check the year of the assessment as well, because a rating is a dated audit conclusion. Many students assume a higher star rating means harder entry, yet admission depends on exam board results and course requirements rather than on stars.
Key Dates for 2027 Entry
Several dates matter for the 2027 entry cycle. Completed undergraduate applications can be submitted from 1 September 2026, the deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses is 15 October, and the main equal consideration deadline for most courses falls on 13 January 2027. UCAS Extra opens on 25 February, and applications submitted after 30 June 2027 go straight into Clearing. On the results side, JCQ lists 12 August 2027 for A-Level and the Extended Project and 19 August for GCSE. Qualifications in England are regulated by Ofqual, whose pages on gov.uk explain how exam boards maintain standards and set grade boundaries. Ofqual reported 814,335 A-Level entries in 2025, slightly fewer than the 816,890 taken in 2024.
The Numbers Behind the Stars
Stars in the teaching category are not impressions but scaled indicators, as set out in the QS Stars methodology version 6.0 published in 2024. The faculty-student ratio earns full marks at one faculty member per ten students and the lowest score at one per fifty. Retention from the first year to the second is scaled from 90 per cent down to 70 per cent, and completion within the expected time from 90 per cent down to 60 per cent. Overall student satisfaction and satisfaction with teaching run from 75 per cent down to 50 per cent, and progression to further study within twelve months of graduation from 30 per cent down to 10 per cent. Library spending moves from 250 US dollars per student to a floor of 10 dollars over a twelve-month period. Employability leans more heavily on graduate employment data submitted by the institution and on employer reputation surveys. Breaking a four-star result into these figures shows whether the gap sits in class size, satisfaction or career support.
Three Checks Before You Trust a Rating
Three quick checks make a rating usable. Open the QS Stars pages on the QS website and confirm the year of the most recent assessment and the list of categories the institution entered. Note which elective categories were included, because five stars in a 50-point elective area such as arts, entrepreneurship or diversity and inclusion only certifies that area rather than the institution as a whole. Then line the category stars up against the course you want to study. Entry requirements, subject combinations and assessment methods live on UCAS and the university's own pages, and a rating page will not give you any of them. The whole check takes about ten minutes and it stops you from basing three years of undergraduate study on a marketing graphic.
