GCSE ALevel
What may cross the exam room threshold is settled before a candidate sits down. JCQ publishes one set of rules for GCSE and A-Level written exams, and everyday objects such as water bottles, watches, calculators and pencil cases are treated quite differently inside a hall; this article works through the current official position item by item, including the real consequences of a breach.
JCQ 的成员包含 AQA、CCEA、City and Guilds、NCFE、OCR、Pearson 与 WJEC 七家颁证机构。
Whichever board a candidate sits with, the rules on what may enter the exam room come from one place. JCQ speaks for AQA, CCEA, City and Guilds, NCFE, OCR, Pearson and WJEC, and publishes the Instructions for Conducting Examinations together with a matching leaflet for candidates, the version in force running from 1 September 2026; a centre may be stricter than those documents but cannot be more relaxed. That is why a school handbook often reads harsher than the national text.
Unauthorised material covers notes; earphones or earbuds such as AirPods, MP3 players and similar devices, smart glasses and tablets; mobile phones; and any kind of watch, whether analogue, digital or smart. Phones and earbuds cause the most trouble each year, and the sentence candidates underrate most is that possession alone breaks the rules even when nothing is used; JCQ states that plain fact and attaches penalties, up to disqualification. A phone inside a bag at the back of the hall still counts as being brought in.
Placing an ordinary watch on the desk used to be acceptable, and that route is now closed. With hundreds of candidates in one hall, an invigilator cannot judge from a distance whether a watch has smart functions, so the ban covers analogue, digital and smart watches alike and the leaflet tells candidates to hand watches to the invigilator; after the announcement, candidates are responsible for surrendering any unauthorised device and switching it off or to silent mode. Halls generally display a clock and invigilators call out the five minute warning.
Only the equipment that the exam actually requires should cross the door: pens, pencils, erasers and anything else the specification permits. Pencil cases must be see-through without exception, ink corrections and highlighters are not on the permitted list, and nothing at all may be borrowed from another candidate, calculators included, because a missing item is a matter for the invigilator. The commonest failure is arriving with a full stationery box that still holds a revision note, which is the point where a routine bag check turns into a written incident.
Under ICE paragraph 18.4 the head of centre decides whether food and drink are allowed in the exam room, and the conditions attached to water are precise: the bottle must be transparent with every label removed, including reusable plastic bottles, while any food must come out of its packaging into a transparent container. In practice most centres permit plain water only, and the accepted routine is to carry the bottle in by hand so an invigilator can see at a glance that no label remains; a part removed label still gets a bottle refused.
Food is handled far more tightly than water, and the usual centre position is that water is open to everyone while food needs a medical reason agreed in advance with the SENCo or a senior leader, diabetes and low blood sugar being the familiar examples; once allowed, food is unpacked into a transparent container and noted in the centre record. Raising the need on the morning of the exam leaves no time for that record, so paperwork belongs with the exams office well before the series starts.
Whether a calculator may be used at all is settled by the awarding body specification, and a single mathematics qualification often splits into a calculator paper and a non-calculator paper. JCQ draws the capability line at symbolic algebra and symbolic calculus, while numerical integration and numerical differentiation are fine as long as only a numerical answer appears; machine translation, communication with other devices and internet access are all barred. No approved model list exists, so the check sits with the candidate.
Once a calculator is allowed, the duties move to the candidate: the power supply, the working condition of the machine, and clearing whatever is stored in its memory. The leaflet asks candidates to check that the calculator works, that the batteries are sound, and that the memory is cleared and the device set to exam mode; removable parts carrying printed formulae must come off, and operating instructions or prepared programs stay outside. Graphics models holding a leftover formula library are the usual culprit, and the practical move is to clear the memory and run the machine the day before.
Timing rules are written out precisely: candidates should arrive at least ten minutes before the start, anyone late must report to the invigilator running that exam, and a candidate arriving more than one hour after the published starting time may not be allowed to sit it at all. Where a late candidate is admitted, the centre must first give every pre-examination warning and then let them use the full time, a change set out in the 2026 to 2027 ICE revision notes; a late entry never shortens the paper.
On-screen tests carry a longer list than written papers. Beyond notes, earphones, phones, watches and smart glasses, candidates must not reach the internet, email, data held on a hard drive or portable storage media such as floppy disks, CDs and memory sticks, and pre-prepared templates are barred as well; without permission, graphics packages, computer aided design software, spreadsheets and social media are also out of bounds. Leaving the room unaccompanied for the rest of a session means no return, and a signed-in mailbox or cloud drive is the detail most often missed.
Ofqual figures published for the summer 2025 series record 5,025 proven student malpractice cases, down 2.5 per cent from 5,155 a year earlier, with 44.3 per cent of them involving a phone or other communication device, that is 2,225 cases against 2,140 in summer 2024; penalties split into 1,970 warnings, 1,955 losses of marks and 1,125 losses of aggregation or certification opportunity. Within the phone group alone, 24.2 per cent of 2025 cases ended in loss of aggregation or certification, up from 17.9 per cent, while 4,735 candidates out of 17.5 million component entries carried a penalty, a share of 0.3 per cent.
Centres do not all read the rules in the same way, and the variation clusters around food, where a bottle may sit, and whether bags are allowed inside. Reading the centre handbook before the series is the reliable step, since it normally goes further than the JCQ floor; spare calculators, earplugs and medication that has to stay with a candidate are best raised with the exams office in advance rather than explained at the door. Leaving phones, watches and earphones in the storage area outside removes the whole risk.
