If your IELTS result does not match what you expected, you can ask for an Enquiry on Results (EOR), commonly called a remark. It is not a new test. Your original answers and recordings go to a senior examiner who does not see your band scores and marks them again against the same public criteria. According to the British Council website, the outcome may be the same score but it will never be lower, and the full fee is refunded if any section improves. Below is what the process involves: where to apply, how the six-week deadline is counted, which sections can be re-marked, what it costs, and how to judge whether a remark is worth your money.
Your test is re-marked by a senior examiner who is not told your original band scores, so the decision rests only on the published assessment criteria. That is what EOR really is: the same answers going through the marking process again, not a request for a favour. Students often assume that appeal letters matter, or that a longer essay must earn a higher band. Neither is true. If a band moves, it moves because of a difference in marking judgement, not because the request sounded convincing. One reassurance comes straight from the official description: your score may stay the same, but it will never go down. Once you accept that, the question stops being about risk to your result and becomes a simple comparison of cost and time.
The request must be submitted within six weeks of the test date printed on your Test Report Form. Once that window closes, no remark is accepted and a retake becomes the only option. Applications are made online through your candidate account: British Council candidates use the Test Taker Portal, and IDP candidates use their own results login. Paper forms are now rare, so there is no postal route to wait on. The usual mistake is waiting for a university reply or for the next test date before acting, which can consume half of the six weeks. A steadier sequence is to decide within three days of receiving the result, submit within the first week, and use the remaining time to line up a fallback, including a booking date for a retake.
You can request any one section, several, or all four: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. When choosing, keep the nature of the marking in mind. Listening and Reading are answer-matching tasks, so the chance of a different outcome is small. Writing and Speaking depend on an examiner's judgement on the day, where a difference is more plausible. Many students assume a remark has to cover the whole test, then pay for four sections to challenge one Writing band. Note also that the re-mark uses only your original answers and recordings. Mock scores, past essays and teacher comments are not part of the process, so submitting them as extra evidence changes nothing.
The fee follows the published rate of your test centre, so the figure differs from centre to centre and appears in your account when you submit the request. The refund rule is simple: if any section improves, the fee comes back in full; if nothing changes, you do not get it back. Treat the money as a deposit rather than a free re-check, which is the part people overlook. It pays to compare numbers before deciding. Re-marking Writing alone when you are half a band short is usually cheaper than a full retake, while re-marking all four sections can cost as much as the test itself and adds two to three weeks of waiting on top.
According to the British Council, the re-mark result is released within 2 to 21 days of submitting the request, and the wait depends on how many sections you asked to be re-marked. If your scores change, an updated Test Report Form is issued. If nothing has arrived after 21 days, the official advice is to contact your test centre rather than filing a second request or opening a separate enquiry. While you wait, the report you already hold stays valid and can be used for applications as normal; once a higher score is confirmed, send the updated version to the universities or institutions that need it. Put that timeline into your application plan, so you do not end up with a school asking for documents before the outcome arrives.
EOR suits two kinds of students. The first is someone whose mock scores sit comfortably at one level, while one test-day section, usually Writing or Speaking, came out clearly below that level. The second is someone exactly half a band short of a university or visa requirement, where the remark fee is smaller than the cost of retaking in both money and time. If you are more than a band below target, a remark can only close a small part of the gap, and preparing for a retake is the more realistic route, because a new test measures your whole performance rather than one band. A remark is also a poor use of money when the score already meets the requirement and the only motive is that a higher band would feel better. Deadlines come first: applications, pre-sessional courses and visas all run on schedules, and two to three weeks of waiting has to fit inside them.
Before submitting, spend ten minutes on a score check. List your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands from recent mocks and compare them with the section you want to challenge. A steady 6.5 in practice against 6.0 on test day points to a genuine gap worth a remark. A section that already swings between 6.0 and 6.5 in practice makes a change less likely, because the test-day band sits inside your normal range. Then check the entry requirement of your target programme, including any separate Writing minimum, so you know whether you are short of the overall band or one component. Finally, count the days left in the six-week window and put the submission date in your calendar. With those three steps done, the decision becomes arithmetic rather than a gamble.
An unchanged outcome is common, and the reasons usually come down to mixing up a remark with advocacy. A long essay does not translate into a higher band, because the criteria look at task response, coherence, vocabulary and grammar rather than length. Speaking works the same way: the examiner can only assess what is on the recording, so long pauses, repeated self-correction and answers that miss the question do not disappear during a re-mark. Another pattern is treating EOR as a safety net and holding the score back from applications, only to find the university deadline has passed when the result arrives. Keep in mind too that EOR covers marking only; registration, transfers and refunds are handled by your test centre.
