T Level
Most students who choose a T Level know there is an industry placement inside the course; far fewer know how it is arranged or what the employer is expected to do. The placement is a compulsory part of the qualification, and no student receives a full T Level certificate without completing it, which is why the delivery model, the hours and the employer's role all matter. This article sets out what the official guidance from the Department for Education actually requires, from minimum hours and approved delivery approaches through to workplace supervision, insurance, DBS checks and the end-of-placement appraisal.
The official guidance is blunt about the minimum: 315 hours, roughly 45 days, with lunch breaks excluded, and most placements are expected to average around 350 hours, or 50 days. The one exception is the early years educator specialism of the education and early years T Level, where a licence to practise depends on at least 750 hours in a real workplace, and assessment for that specialism relies on performance in real settings. Hours matter, but progress against learning goals and direct work with an employer matter just as much; turning up is not the whole requirement, and leaving the hours until the second year, when coursework and exams compete for the same weeks, is a common mistake.
A placement takes up around 20% of the course, with about 80% of the student's time still spent in the classroom, while an apprenticeship works the other way round, typically 80% on the job and 20% in the classroom. Work experience is shorter again and usually involves watching rather than doing, which is why the three are frequently confused, and why the confusion tends to show up in personal statements. Placement tasks must be real work that the student performs and that develops technical skill.
The pattern is agreed between the employer, the provider and the student, and the approved options include a single block, a series of blocks, day release, or a mix of these. Production roles with heavy equipment often suit blocks placed in holidays, while office-based roles fit one or two days a week; there is no single required model, and the delivery framework updated in May 2026 gives providers more scope to tailor placements to local employer capacity and to how ready the student is. Where hours fall outside the normal timetable, students and parents must be told before enrolment.
When one employer cannot cover the full 315 hours, the provider can split part of the placement with a second employer, and the student still works to a single set of learning goals. Both employers should receive the objectives template so that the two experiences complement each other instead of repeating the same job, and the guidance recommends no more than two employers unless the student would benefit from broader sector exposure or the employer's work is short-term in nature. Every employer involved must write an appraisal, and each student needs enough time with each one to gain real depth.
Hours from a part-time job can count towards the placement if the work is occupationally relevant, and the guidance gives the example of a craft and design student repairing and displaying jewellery at a local shop, where the tasks connect directly to the course. Placements do not have to be tied to the occupational specialism either, since a setting within the same pathway or route is acceptable, such as a hospital, community health centre or GP surgery for a nursing specialism. Work taster activities are capped at 35 hours, and their purpose is to help a student work out which part of the sector suits them.
Remote hours are permitted, and the guidance defines them as any time spent away from the physical workplace and not face-to-face with the employer. The provider has to check that the employer can support remote work, and the student needs a suitable environment, the right equipment and the ability to work independently; remote hours are recommended to stay within 20% of the placement, so that most of the experience remains face-to-face. Sectors where remote working is established practice, such as digital, can go beyond that share, because the placement should mirror the environment the student will eventually work in.
A student can work in a small team on a project supervised by an employer, either on the employer's site or at the provider, and teams should be small, around five to seven students. The task should be based on a real scenario, ideally a live challenge, and the employer must monitor progress, give feedback and run at least one formal review meeting for each student on the project. The guidance recommends using this approach for no more than one third of the placement, leaving the rest of the time in an external workplace.
The provider carries overall responsibility for organising the placement, from explaining the arrangement to students and parents before enrolment to sourcing placements, agreeing learning goals with the employer and the student, and preparing the student. It must also make sure employers understand their role, safeguard the student while on placement, hold regular review meetings, decide whether the completion criteria have been met, and submit and retain the paperwork. Where a student has significant caring responsibilities, the provider is expected to identify this early, because it limits the hours available each week.
The placement must be overseen by an employer, and the person who sets the tasks and activities has to be an industry professional who does not teach the T Level curriculum. That employer also provides the guidance and training needed to complete those tasks and produces an accurate, unbiased appraisal of the student's performance, so that the placement stays genuinely industrial rather than becoming an extension of the classroom. Providers, in turn, must make sure employers understand and follow their responsibilities.
The employer's duties are short but concrete: a safe working environment, the chance to develop technical skills within the industry, a line manager who supports, supervises and mentors the student, an induction that explains relevant policies and procedures, and formal feedback at the end measured against the agreed learning goals. Induction normally happens on day one and covers safety, conduct and emergency procedures, while the final feedback is not a formality and has to be written against the learning goals. Students keep a logbook, record their hours weekly and meet their manager and tutor regularly.
A placement is part of a course, so there is no legal requirement or expectation that the student is paid, and the employer decides whether and how much to pay. Travel and subsistence costs can be covered or contributed to by the employer, and where they are not, the provider may pay, while employers should notify their insurer because the student will be with them for more than two weeks. Health and safety remains the employer's legal duty, including a safe environment, suitable training and an adequate induction, and tasks forming part of normal work are usually already covered by existing employer's and public liability policies.
Safeguarding is the provider's responsibility, so the provider checks the employer's policies and procedures and may visit the site before the placement, with checks proportionate to the level of risk. On DBS checks, employers generally do not need a basic, standard or enhanced check for staff supervising 16 and 17 year olds, though a provider can ask a line manager to complete a basic check, while in some sectors it is the student who needs an enhanced check, education settings being the obvious example. Agriculture, construction and manufacturing count as high-risk environments, so age limits must be confirmed before training a student on heavy or dangerous machinery.
Learning goals are set jointly by the T Level teacher, the placement employer and the student, and they must mix technical and employability skills, with a minimum of three of each. Goals need to be measurable and stretching, aligned with the tasks the student will actually perform, and reviewed regularly during the placement to see whether clear progress has been made. Students record their progress in a logbook, log their hours weekly, and attend regular meetings with their tutor and manager; vague goals are the most common reason a final appraisal ends up saying very little.
The provider decides whether the placement is complete, and three conditions have to hold at once: clear progress against the learning goals, direct work with an employer in a real workplace, and at least 315 hours, or 750 for the early years educator specialism. Where circumstances justify it, a provider can apply special consideration and still report the placement as complete for funding purposes, while colleges record placements on the individualised learner record under learning aim ZWRKX003 and schools use the same qualification number in the school census. The Department for Education's survey of the first cohort, published in April 2024, found a 99% completion rate, with 27% of those in work or an apprenticeship employed by the employer that hosted them.
