City rankings and university rankings answer different questions, and the city table contains one column built almost entirely from student opinion. QS published the 2027 edition of its Best Student Cities ranking on 21 July 2026, covering 150 cities. Student View carries the same weight as university performance, cost and employment prospects, yet it is the column most often misread. What follows is how that column is built, what each score actually asks, and where students go wrong when they quote it.
The city table has entry rules rather than open nominations. A city needs more than 250,000 residents and at least two universities listed in the latest QS World University Rankings, with population measured on a metropolitan basis so that small and large countries can be compared fairly. A third condition concerns location risk, which must sit within an acceptable band on the International SOS index. That is why the 2027 table stops at 150 cities, and why several well-regarded smaller towns never appear at all.
Six indicators feed the city score, and QS states on its own site that each one carries 16.67% of the total. The set covers university rankings, student mix, desirability, employer activity, affordability and student view. Equal weighting means a single weak column drags an otherwise strong city down, while one outstanding column cannot carry the rest. Third-party write-ups sometimes quote 30% for employer activity, which does not match the official split and should be checked against QS before it is reused.
Student View draws on the QS International Student Survey and produces two indicators rather than one. The first is the Student Experience Score, the second is the Staying After Grad Score, and both are adjusted for the share of international responses in the sample. Because the lens is built from ratings, it records how students felt about a city rather than what the city objectively is.
The Student Experience Score pools nine ratings: tolerance and inclusion, diversity, friendliness, ease of getting around, affordability, nightlife, employment opportunities, arts and culture, and sustainability. Students supply each rating directly, and QS combines them into a single figure. A high sustainability rating therefore says something about student perception, not about measured emissions.
Two parts of the table touch on environment and safety, and they should not be conflated. The sustainability rating sits inside the student questionnaire, while climate, pollution, healthcare and safety sit inside the Desirability lens and come from Numbeo's Quality of Life Index, Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index and the Economist's Safe Cities Index. Perception and third-party measurement can pull in opposite directions, which is why some cities look stronger on one line than on the other.
Student Mix is built from four indicators: the international student ratio, the international student volume, the student population ratio, and a tolerance and inclusion score taken from the AlTi Global Social Progress Index. Diversity, by contrast, is a student rating inside the Student View lens. A city can host large numbers of international students and still be rated as less diverse by the students living there.
Friendliness and tolerance are asked in different places and measured against different things. Friendliness is one of the nine student ratings and reflects everyday treatment, whereas tolerance and inclusion is a country-level score from the Social Progress Index that describes institutions and social conditions. Where the two scores diverge, the gap is informative in itself.
The Staying After Grad Score tracks the proportion of students who stayed in their study city or said they intended to stay for at least a year after graduating. QS describes it as a reflection of how students read both the availability and the quality of local employment, and it is adjusted for the level of international response. For anyone planning to work abroad before returning home, this line deserves more attention than overall rank.
Indicators come from two very different places. The Economist's Big Mac index, Numbeo's cost of living and traffic indices, World Bank youth employment figures, the Corruption Perceptions Index and Loughborough University's GaWC connectivity data are all external measurements. The dream city question, the employer survey and the nine student ratings are survey-based. The QS indicator notes name the source for each line, so the simplest check is to read which source is listed.
Both Student View indicators are adjusted for the proportion of international responses, which means the composition of the sample shapes the result. Where replies cluster around students from one country, the score tilts towards that group's preferences. A small gap between two cities with very different response volumes is not solid ground for a firm conclusion.
QS places safety inside Desirability rather than giving it a column of its own. The cities performing best on Desirability, as listed by QS, are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Vienna and Sydney. The composite draws on Numbeo's safety index and is reinforced by the personal safety element of the Social Progress Index and the Economist's Safe Cities Index, so it offers a more direct read on personal security than the overall rank does.
A city ranking assesses a city, not your course, and two universities in the same place can differ sharply in workload and departmental strength. A workable sequence is to shortlist programmes first, then use the city table to check cost of living, the Staying After Grad Score and ease of getting around. In the 2027 edition London remains Europe's highest-ranked student city even as several European cities slip, while Asia Pacific holds the largest share of the top twenty.
