ESAT TMUA
The 2027 entry cycle runs two UAT-UK test windows, in October 2026 and January 2027, and applicants to Cambridge or Oxford are expected to sit in October. The official deadlines page lists exactly two exceptions: mature applicants to a Cambridge college with a January admissions deadline, and applicants to the Astrophoria Foundation Year at Oxford. A January sitting is not a retake, since you may only sit once within an admissions cycle.
Cambridge treats an applicant as mature if they turn 21 on or before 1 October in the year they start. Three colleges admit only students aged 21 and over, namely Hughes Hall, St Edmund's College and Wolfson College, where the student body includes people returning to study after several years away. Each college runs its own admissions office, and staff there are used to assessing qualifications taken a decade ago, so a short email before you apply is worth the effort.
The standard round closes on 15 October 2026 at 6pm UK time, the date published on the Cambridge admissions site. Mature applicants who already hold their qualifications are encouraged to use this round rather than wait for January. Medicine, the Graduate Course in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine accept applications only in the standard round, and the same applies if you want a college other than the three mature ones.
The January round is open only to applicants choosing Hughes Hall, St Edmund's College or Wolfson College, and it excludes medicine, graduate medicine and veterinary medicine. UCAS closes on 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time, with the My Cambridge Application form due a week later on 20 January 2027; test registration for that round closes on 21 December 2026. Anyone who applied in the preceding October cannot use the January round, so the two deadlines need to be tracked as separate items.
Mature applicants must meet the same academic standard as school leavers, and colleges look for recent evidence of high-level study, usually within two years of the course start. If your qualifications are older, a college may suggest a bridging course or a fresh sitting before it can assess your preparation. Work experience counts as useful context, yet it does not replace academic evidence, so send transcripts early and ask what the college needs from you.
On the UAT-UK key dates page, applicants to Cambridge or Oxford are told they MUST sit the test in October, and only two exceptions are listed. The first covers mature applicants to a Cambridge college with a January admissions deadline, the second covers applicants to the Astrophoria Foundation Year at Oxford. Candidates for the other five institutions can choose either window, with no stated advantage in either, but only one sitting per admissions cycle.
For the first exception, the Cambridge mature student page states that a January-round applicant whose course requires ESAT or TMUA may take that test in either the October or the January sitting. Hughes Hall sets test registration for its second round at 21 December 2026, while access arrangement requests close earlier, on 7 December. Results are released on 8 February 2027 through the UAT-UK account and sent straight to the universities you applied to.
Oxford's exception sits with the Astrophoria Foundation Year, where every 2027 entry course must be submitted through UCAS by 13 January 2027 at 6pm UK time. The programme is open to UK state school students with home fee status who meet the disadvantage criteria, and international applicants are not eligible. Four routes are offered, in chemistry, engineering and materials science, humanities, law, and philosophy, politics and economics, with up to 50 funded places and no course fees.
Which test you sit depends on the foundation route. Engineering Science options in CEMS require ESAT, PPE requires TARA, which is new for 2027 entry, and law requires LNAT, taken before 13 January 2027. Foundation Year applicants may sit ESAT or TARA in either window; TARA itself contains three 40-minute modules, and the 750-word writing task is passed to universities unscored.
The January timeline opens on 5 October 2026 at 3pm UK time, when access arrangement and bursary applications reopen, and test booking begins on 26 October 2026 at 3pm GMT. Access arrangement requests close on 7 December, bursaries on 14 December, and booking closes on 21 December 2026 at 6pm GMT with no late entries accepted. The test window runs from 4 to 8 January 2027, with results on 8 February 2027; bursary decisions take about five working days, so apply before you book.
Test security rules narrow the choices for candidates sitting in China, Hong Kong and Macau. In October, ESAT runs only on 12 or 13 October, TARA on 14 October, and TMUA on 15 or 16 October; in January, ESAT runs on 6 January, TARA on 7 January, and TMUA on 8 January. UAT-UK states that no exceptions can be made, so candidates in these regions book the single day that matches their test.
ESAT and TMUA report each module separately on a 1 to 9 scale with one decimal place, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so every question is worth attempting. UAT-UK fixes the median at 4.5 and the 90th percentile at 7.0 on its Prepare page, which gives applicants a reference point rather than a pass mark. TARA scores its two multiple-choice modules the same way, while the writing task is not marked, and results arrive about four weeks after the test and go directly to the universities.
Test fees for 2027 entry depend on where you sit, not on your nationality: 78 pounds in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and 133 pounds elsewhere. Bursaries cover the full fee but must be requested before booking, since payments are normally not refunded, and access arrangements such as extra time, a separate room or a reader take up to ten working days to review. UAT-UK does not endorse paid coaching providers, and sharing test content during or after a sitting is prohibited.
Three checks are worth doing before you submit. First confirm that your chosen college is one of the three with a January deadline, because the exception applies to Hughes Hall, St Edmund's College and Wolfson College only; then confirm which test your course requires, since ESAT, TMUA, TARA and LNAT follow different rules. Finally work backwards from the January window, remembering that booking closes on 21 December 2026 at 6pm GMT and that access arrangements and bursaries must be requested earlier still.
