League tables for executive MBAs look authoritative, yet the order they produce depends on what the compilers decided to measure. QS publishes a short methodology page alongside its Executive MBA Rankings, and the weights, the two surveys and the submission windows are all listed there. Reading the method before the results makes the numbers far less mysterious.
Two conditions decide whether a school appears on the QS Executive MBA list at all: a graduating class must exist, and the business school must hold AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or EPAS accreditation. The most recent edition ranked 202 programmes, 26 of which were joint degrees run across two or three institutions; joint programmes are published as a separate table rather than folded into the main one. A new programme missing from the table is usually a question of timing rather than of quality.
Five weighted groups produce the final score, and the weights are printed on the QS methodology page. Employer reputation carries the largest share at 30 per cent, ahead of academic reputation and thought leadership at 25 per cent, career outcomes at 20 per cent, executive profile at 15 per cent and class diversity at 10 per cent. Because the first two groups account for more than half of the total, movements in survey responses can shift a school's position even when nothing about its teaching has changed.
Employer reputation rests on the QS Global Employer Survey, where recruiters are asked to name, without any prompt, the international schools they have recently tried to hire from. Every mention counts as one vote, and the votes are pooled across regions and industries; responses from the past five years are used, with the newest ones weighted most heavily. It is the single largest indicator at 30 per cent, which is why the QS commentary credits Warwick Business School's climb into the top ten mainly to this measure.
The academic survey asks business school scholars to rate peer institutions, covering research strength, academic partnerships, teaching innovation and wider impact. Answers are weighted by recency in the same way as the employer survey, and the group accounts for 25 per cent of the total. It measures what academics think of each other rather than what recruiters see in graduates, so a school with heavy research investment and frequent joint publications tends to hold its position here.
Career outcomes adds 20 per cent and combines two numbers: the mean percentage salary increase within a year of graduation, and the share of students promoted within twelve months. Both figures come from data submitted by the schools themselves rather than from an independent audit, which is worth remembering when a headline number looks dramatic. Read the indicator alongside the class's average years of work experience, since an experienced cohort has less room to move quickly; a strong score on its own says little.
Executive profile accounts for 15 per cent and has three ingredients: average years of work experience, average years of managerial experience, and the proportion of the enrolled class with C-suite experience, meaning roles at the level of chief executive or finance director. The figures come from school submissions, so programmes designed for senior managers score higher by design. QS credited Yale School of Management's two-place rise partly to improvements in mean work experience and the student gender ratio.
Class diversity carries the smallest weight at 10 per cent and is built from two numbers: the share of women in the cohort and the number of nationalities represented. Both come from cohort data submitted by the school, so the figures describe one intake rather than the programme as a whole. Low weight does not mean irrelevance for applicants who want an international classroom, and small cohorts can score well here with only a handful of nationalities.
Data collection runs to a fixed rhythm: research begins each November and the rankings are published the following April. The QS support page lists an institution data deadline of 16 January, while the academic and employer surveys run from November to early March. Because responses span five years and are weighted towards recent ones, an April table largely reflects the questionnaires and submissions gathered the previous autumn and winter.
The overall rank is an aggregate, and single-indicator tables often tell a different story. A school placed lower overall may sit near the top for career outcomes while losing ground on the survey-based measures, which is why QS lets users sort the table by any of the five indicators. Regional tables transform the global rank but do not publish separate indicator ranks, so a move in a regional table cannot be traced to one measure alone.
QS also groups schools into personas that turn the relationship between indicators into a short diagnosis. Institutions whose career outcomes score sits clearly above their employer reputation score fall into the employer deficit group, and the 2025 commentary counts 44 schools in that position: they deliver results for graduates but are not front of mind for recruiters. The opposite pattern describes programmes with diverse cohorts but uneven career results.
Results are published as a global table plus regional tables for Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, North America, and a separate table for joint programmes. Each regional table uses the same five scores but a narrower pool of schools, so the same position carries a different meaning from region to region. The scope matters for families: this is a ranking of executive programmes for managers with years of experience, not a general university league table.
Whatever the league table, the first move is to find the methodology page and read the weights. The second is to check where the data comes from, since survey-based indicators and self-reported figures carry different risks. The third is to break the total into single indicators, because a school that looks unremarkable overall is often strong in one specific area, and that is the detail worth carrying into a course or university choice.
