Official IELTS materials make the same point from the other side. The Speaking test is a tightly timed, face-to-face interview of 11 to 14 minutes, so the examiner has to keep three parts inside that window. Being stopped or redirected is part of how the test is built rather than a verdict on your English. Three official reasons explain most interruptions, and each of them is easier to handle once you know the timing behind it.
The Speaking test lasts 11 to 14 minutes and has three parts. Part 1 is a four to five minute interview on familiar ground such as home, family, work, studies and interests. Part 2 gives you a task card, one minute to prepare and up to two minutes of uninterrupted talk, so the whole part takes three to four minutes. Part 3 turns to more abstract questions on the same topic and runs four to five minutes; examiners work to a fixed plan, which is why a long answer cannot simply be allowed to run on.
The official explanation for most interruptions is simply that time is up. The Part 2 task card itself asks for one to two minutes of talking, and the examiner frame used with official sample cards tells candidates not to worry if they are stopped. The examiner brings the long turn to an end when the limit is reached, so an interruption there usually means the allowance was filled. Keeping going for the full two minutes is evidence that you had something to say, which sits well with the fluency descriptor.
A second official reason is that you have already answered the question fully, so the examiner moves on. In Part 1, examiners use four to five minutes to work through several topic groups, and British Council preparation guidance suggests two or three sentences per question to make that possible. Fast-forwarding gives you more topics, which is where range of language becomes visible. Length on a single question can crowd out the topics you never get asked about, so a quick move on is a chance rather than a penalty.
The third reason is redirection. If you have misread the question or drifted away from it, the examiner brings you back, and that is a correction of direction rather than a judgement of your English. The phrase OK, let's move on is a cue to start the next answer, not to finish the last one. Candidates often waste time here by restructuring what they had already said, which is why the one or two rounding-off questions after Part 2 should be answered briefly.
Speaking is assessed on four equally weighted criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation, with the final band being an average of the four. None of them asks whether you were interrupted, and no rule deducts marks for a brief answer. The examiner reaches one judgement from your performance across the whole test rather than scoring question by question. What shapes that judgement is the language you produce before and after the interruption.
Pacing the test is part of an examiner's job rather than a personal preference. The official Chinese IELTS site states that every examiner completes systematic training and certification, then faces regular monitoring and re-assessment while scoring against globally consistent band descriptors. Examiners are also trained to understand a wide range of accents, so an accent different from the textbook recordings is not a reason for a lower band. Because the same standards apply in every city, your result should not depend on the mood or manner of the examiner you meet.
When you are stopped, stop. Listen to the next question and answer that one instead of adding a closing line about the previous topic, because the examiner has already moved the test forward. If you were redirected because you had drifted, accept the correction and point the next answer at the key words in the question. Slowing down or apologising after an interruption tends to depress the rest of the test, so treat the stop as a topic switch and keep your pace.
Could you repeat that, please 或者 Sorry, do you mean 这类句子。
Interruption works in both directions: you may ask the examiner to repeat or rephrase a question. Official guidance says this costs no marks and can even show communicative skill. Examiners commonly slow down, repeat key words or simplify the structure for you. There is no published limit on how often you may ask, but brevity matters because every request uses time, and guessing wildly at a question you did not hear is the worse option.
Great question, let me think about it for a moment
Hesitation is a separate issue from interruption, and official advice treats it differently. The Chinese IELTS site suggests transition phrases such as Great question, let me think about it for a moment to buy thinking time without breaking the flow. A two or three second pause is not what lowers a fluency band; long silences and repeated restarts are. Repeating the last word you said is a habit worth replacing with a phrase you have already prepared.
From 1 September 2026 paper-based IELTS is discontinued in mainland China, with IELTS for UKVI following from 1 July 2026, so candidates there sit the test on computer. The Speaking test is unchanged and still takes place face to face with a certified examiner in a separate room. Because the interview format is untouched, the pacing, follow-up questions and interruptions you prepare for remain the same. Your speaking slot may fall on the same day as the other sections or up to a week before or after, and the four criteria still apply.
Three beliefs are worth correcting. An interruption is a signal about timing and topic management rather than a penalty for weak English. Speaking faster does not raise a band, because pronunciation asks how easily you can be understood, and Part 2 does not have to run the full two minutes before the examiner moves on. Acting on any of these beliefs usually costs more than the interruption itself.
A stopwatch is the most useful tool for this. Use an official sample task card, plan for one minute, then speak for two minutes and stop on time without extending. When you listen back, check how much you completed before the interruption and whether you restarted sentences, then practise Part 1 in short bursts across several topic groups. Twenty minutes, three times a week, is enough, and rehearsing the interruption itself is what makes it feel normal on the day.
