Only two universities currently require the TARA, and both publish the requirement course by course rather than faculty by faculty. For 2027 entry Oxford uses it across its social science and psychology courses, while UCL keeps it for Computer Science and, from this cycle, Mechanical Engineering. The list is short enough to check by hand, but it moves every year, so the course page is the only version worth trusting. A missing test registration can invalidate an application, which is a costly way to learn that a requirement existed.
Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions，由 UAT-UK 出题、通过 Pearson VUE 在考点机考。
TARA is a non-subject-specific test, which is the single most important thing to understand before booking; it consists of three modules of 40 minutes each, two of them multiple choice and one a 750-word Writing Task. The official guidance says no subject knowledge is assumed, so preparation means familiarising yourself with the question style rather than revising content; calculators and dictionaries are not permitted, and the Writing Task is not scored by UAT-UK. In practice, candidates who do well are the ones who have practised under timed conditions.
Seven institutions belong to UAT-UK, yet the TARA appears at only two of them; Imperial and Cambridge rely on the ESAT and TMUA, while LSE, Warwick and Durham list the TMUA alone; at LSE it is compulsory for Economics and for Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, and recommended elsewhere. The official Course List for 2027 entry was last updated in April 2026 and gives course names, UCAS codes and required modules institution by institution. Searching that document for your own course code settles the question faster than any forum thread.
Economics and Management（LN12）、History and Economics（LV11）、History and Politics（LV21）、Human Sciences（BCL0）、Experimental Psychology（C830）与 Philosophy, Politics and Economics（L0V0）。
Oxford's first group of TARA courses sits in the social sciences and psychology: Economics and Management, History and Economics, History and Politics, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology, and Philosophy, Politics and Economics; none of them demands a maths or science background, which is precisely why the university wants a uniform reasoning measure across the group. UCAS codes are safer than translated course names here, because translations vary between teachers, agencies and articles. All three TARA modules are compulsory for Oxford applicants; there is no optional module to drop.
Philosophy and Linguistics（VQ51）、Psychology and Linguistics（CQ81）与 Psychology and Philosophy（CV85）并成一条写成 Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics，所以官网清单看上去是七门。
Oxford's own page groups three separate degrees into one line called Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics, which is why its list looks shorter than the test provider's; the UAT-UK course list spells the same requirement out by UCAS code: Philosophy and Linguistics VQ51, Psychology and Linguistics CQ81, and Psychology and Philosophy CV85. The discrepancy changes nothing about who sits the test; it only changes how you count the courses; codes are the reliable unit, so check the code rather than the umbrella name.
Oxford expects its undergraduate applicants in the October sitting, with one exception: the PPE route of the Astrophoria Foundation Year, UCAS code L0VF; that programme has a January UCAS deadline of 13 January 2027, so its applicants may choose either the October or the January window. The Foundation Year pages state that all applicants must take the TARA, and that it has to be completed before the UCAS application is submitted. Elsewhere at Oxford there is no January option, and the test booking window does not follow the UCAS deadline.
Oxford splits its UAT-UK requirements across three tests. Engineering, physics, biomedical sciences and the engineering-adjacent degrees use the ESAT, usually with Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics as fixed modules; computer science and the maths family use the TMUA instead. Medicine still uses the UCAT and Law still uses the LNAT, both administered elsewhere. Oxford also confirms that an applicant who applies to several UAT-UK universities only sits the relevant test once, though two different tests still mean two registrations.
UCL 计算机系四个本科专业全部要求 TARA:Computer Science BSc（G400）、Computer Science MEng（G402）、Computer Science and Mathematics MEng（G430）与 Robotics and Artificial Intelligence MEng（H700）。
Every undergraduate programme in UCL's Department of Computer Science requires the TARA: Computer Science BSc, Computer Science MEng, Computer Science and Mathematics MEng, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence MEng; UCL states that all three modules are taken and that the result is read alongside A-Level grades and the UCAS personal statement in a holistic review. The department's own page reports 5549 applications for 210 places in 2024/25, against entry requirements of A*A*A with an A* in Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Its Philosophy and Computer Science BA carries no admissions test at all.
UCL's Mechanical Engineering BEng and MEng join the TARA list for 2027 entry, flagged on the university's own page as a new requirement; Electronic and Electrical Engineering stays with the ESAT, which needs Mathematics 1 plus any two of Physics, Mathematics 2, Chemistry and Biology. Module choices are locked in at booking and cannot be changed or added afterwards, so a candidate applying to both departments is registering for two separate tests; leaving that until late September makes a convenient test centre much harder to find.
Three groups of UCL courses moved between the 2026 and 2027 cycles; Sociology BSc, Social Sciences with Data Science BSc, Social Sciences BSc and the Management Science BSc and MSci used the TARA in 2026 but require no admissions test for 2027 entry, including deferred 2028 entry. The three European and International Social and Political Studies programmes have swapped the TARA for UCL's own online Thinking Skills Test; advice written for last year's cycle is therefore the least reliable source available.
The TARA is offered in two sittings for 2027 entry: 12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027; booking for the October sitting opened on 20 July 2026 and closed at 6pm UK time on 28 September 2026, while accounts could be created from 1 June. The January window opens for registration on 5 October 2026, with booking running to 21 December, access arrangement requests due on 7 December and bursary requests on 14 December; in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau the October sitting runs on 14 October only and the January sitting on 7 January only, with no individual exceptions for security reasons.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are scored separately on a 1 to 9 scale reported to one decimal place, with no marks deducted for wrong answers and no pass mark; the Writing Task is not scored by UAT-UK; a copy goes to every university where the candidate applied for a course requiring the TARA, and is read there. Results appear in the UAT-UK account roughly four weeks after the sitting and are sent to universities automatically. Oxford states that shortlisted applicants for 2027 entry will hear the outcome through UCAS on 12 January 2027.
UAT-UK's own TARA page lists the fee as £78 in the UK and Republic of Ireland and £133 elsewhere, charged by test centre location rather than nationality, while UCL's 2027 cycle page says £75 and £130; where official pages disagree, take the price on the UAT-UK page at the moment you book. Bursaries cover the full fee but must be applied for before booking, since paying first does not produce a refund, and decisions take about five working days. Access arrangement requests can take up to ten working days and cannot be arranged on test day, and the test may be taken only once per admissions cycle.
Checking whether the TARA applies to you takes three moves; open the course page for the exact programme and look for the admissions test or selection tests section; search the UAT-UK Course List for your UCAS code rather than a translated course name; then confirm whether you are on the Oxford route, where the October sitting is the default. Both the course pages and the course list were updated during 2026, which makes them newer than any third-party summary; the requirement can move again next cycle, so a single check does not last beyond one application.
