T Level
For students on a T Level, the industry placement is not an optional extra. The Department for Education sets a minimum of 315 hours, roughly 45 working days, and the placement has to be completed before the T Level certificate is awarded. Placement time accounts for about 20% of the course, with the provider checking progress through learning goals, weekly timesheets and formal review meetings. In practice, the paperwork matters as much as the work itself.
The Department for Education sets a minimum of 315 hours, roughly 45 working days once lunch breaks are excluded. Most placements are expected to average around 350 hours, and some specialisms need much longer. One clear exception is the early years educator specialism of the Education and Early Years T Level, which requires 750 hours in a real workplace to meet the criteria for a licence to practise. Only hours actually worked and signed off count towards the total.
Where one employer cannot cover the full 315 hours, the placement can be shared with a second employer. The placement objectives template, including the learning goals, must go to both so their activities complement each other. Each employer then produces its own appraisal covering the time the student spent with them. Starting from a shared set of goals saves a lot of retrofitting later.
Employers, providers and students can choose a block, a series of blocks, day release, or a mix of these. A single external placement with one employer for the full duration remains the recommended model, because students need enough time to settle into the workplace and complete tasks independently. Students and parents should be told before enrolment when placement hours fall outside the normal timetable. An industry placement is shorter and more structured than an apprenticeship, and far more demanding than a week of work experience.
Learning goals are agreed before the placement starts by the tutor and the employer. They must be relevant to the T Level course, reviewed regularly while the placement runs, and precise enough to be evidenced. A student completes the placement only by showing clear progress against those goals. Vague wording such as improve communication makes the final decision harder for everyone.
The employer must oversee the placement, and an industry professional who does not teach the T Level curriculum has to set the tasks. Employers provide a safe workplace, an induction covering relevant policies, a line manager for supervision and mentoring, and an accurate appraisal of the student's performance. Access to the systems and equipment needed for the learning goals sits with the employer as well.
Before the placement, providers make sure students have the technical and employability skills they need and know how to prepare a CV and an interview. Students are expected to research the organisation, covering its work, products or services, culture, and size and structure. Knowing the role in advance prevents a first-week mismatch. Students with additional needs should tell their tutor early so that support can be planned.
A minimum of three review meetings is expected across the placement, with the provider leading and recording each three-way discussion. One meeting should take place at the student's workplace so the environment can be checked. The records are kept and can serve as evidence if a student appeals the completion decision. Welfare sits on the agenda alongside progress towards the learning goals.
Each student keeps a logbook or an equivalent reflective tool, updated as the placement runs, with self-reflection and written feedback after each task. A timesheet sits inside that logbook, and the employer checks and signs it off every week to confirm the recorded hours match the hours worked. Unrecorded hours are hard to reconstruct once the placement has ended. Weekly sign-off is the simplest way to keep the evidence clean.
Students with SEND, a disability or anxiety should tell their tutor before the placement starts, whether or not they hold an education, health and care plan. Providers plan the support and brief the employer so reasonable adjustments can be made in the workplace. Adjustments might involve travel, working patterns or equipment. Employer duties here sit under the Equality Act 2010.
Employers complete an appraisal before the final review, and each employer does so separately if the placement was split. The provider chairs the final three-way meeting and decides whether the completion criteria are met, applying special consideration where appropriate. Completion status is then reported through the Manage T Level results service. A generic appraisal weakens the evidence behind that decision.
On the last day, students should clear personal files from the employer's IT equipment and take nothing away without written permission. A thank-you message, a question about a future reference, and an updated CV are all part of the wrap-up. Employers are expected to provide an appraisal, though a reference is not compulsory. The placement also opens routes into employment, an apprenticeship or further study with the same employer.
Ofqual reported on 13 August 2026 that 19,665 T Level results were awarded in summer 2026, up from 11,980 in 2025, and that 18.3% of students taking the occupational specialism in the second year achieved a distinction. Results are released alongside A level results, and destinations include employment, apprenticeships and further study. Checking the local employer base before choosing a specialism is a practical first step.
