Results timelines for computer-delivered IELTS have shifted quickly in recent years. The official position on ielts.org is that computer results arrive within 1 to 5 days, while paper-based tests can take up to 13 days. From 1 September 2026, IELTS and IELTS for UKVI in Chinese mainland move entirely to computer delivery, and electronic score reports are issued alongside. What matters for applicants is not only speed but the sequence: viewing scores, downloading the report and sending it to institutions are three separate steps with their own rules.
Marking on paper involves physical logistics: answer sheets travel back to a marking centre, get scanned and split into items before examiners ever see them. On computer, responses are uploaded as soon as the test ends, so objective papers are scored automatically while writing and speaking are marked by trained examiners. Identity and integrity checks run alongside, comparing candidate details and flagging unusual answer patterns. The result is a window rather than a fixed date.
The official results pages set out the windows by test type: computer-delivered IELTS within 1 to 5 days, paper-based up to 13 days, IELTS Online 6 to 8 days, IELTS for UKVI within 1 to 5 days and Life Skills up to 9 days. The same source states that globally 80% of scores are available within two days and roughly half within one day, based on worldwide test data from May and June 2024. The 1-to-5-day figure is an outer limit rather than an average. Paper results in India are quoted at seven days. Knowing which category you fall into tells you how much buffer to leave before a deadline.
The British Council timetable published in 2026 sets out the switch: from 1 September 2026 both IELTS and IELTS for UKVI in Chinese mainland are computer-delivered, with IELTS for UKVI moving first on 1 July 2026. Nothing inside the test itself changes. Content, question types, difficulty and marking standards stay the same, so material written for the paper version remains usable. Sessions for October to December 2026 are already open for booking, and morning or afternoon slots can be chosen freely.
Checking your score online needs the identity document you registered with, your candidate number and your account login. Candidates who have renewed a passport since registering are the ones who most often get stuck, because the document number no longer matches the record. Candidates who booked through the British Council receive an email link when scores are released, while those who booked through IDP log into their IDP account. Test takers in the USA see results in a separate registration account, and keeping the candidate number alone is not enough.
The electronic Test Report Form, usually shortened to eTRF, is the digital version of your score report. IELTS materials state that it carries the same status as the paper copy, because the format is standardised worldwide. That is why a missing stamp or signature causes no difficulty with receiving institutions: verification runs through the official results service instead. In Chinese mainland, candidates sitting IELTS or IELTS for UKVI on computer from 1 September 2026 onwards can obtain one, while paper reports continue in parallel for a period. Life Skills tests still come with a paper report only.
Officially, scores can be viewed from 22:00 on the first evening after the test date, through the registration website. The download link for the eTRF opens at 10:00 on the day after results are released. These are two separate moments, and treating them as one is a common slip. If an application deadline is close, you can enter your scores in the application form first and upload the file once the download window opens.
An eTRF can be downloaded as many times as you need within the two-year validity period. The countdown starts on the test date, not on the day you first saved the file. Candidates who keep a copy only inside a chat thread often cannot find it after changing phones, when logging in again would have taken a moment. Some universities insist that scores arrive directly from the test provider, so check before relying on a self-uploaded file.
If a remark changes your score, a new eTRF is generated and the previous version stops being valid. Both files should never circulate at the same time, and the older one should not be sent to institutions. Remark outcomes follow their own timeline, which is longer than the standard result window. Where a remark finishes after you have applied, admissions offices generally expect an email with the updated report attached.
Eligibility for the eTRF is tied to the test date: only computer-delivered IELTS and IELTS for UKVI taken on or after 1 September 2026 qualify, and earlier tests cannot be converted. IELTS for UKVI Life Skills stays outside the scheme and continues with paper reports. Candidates sitting outside Chinese mainland should ask their local test centre, as IELTS states that some countries already issue eTRFs. The boundary catches people who switch test centres or move country between attempts.
Paper reports can be posted free of charge to up to five organisations, with a fee for anything beyond that. Electronic delivery carries no such limit and is arranged either in the booking portal or through the test centre. Which route to use depends on the institution, since some accept only electronic delivery while others want a paper original. A short email to the admissions office confirming the preferred method and account name saves weeks later on.
Many students assume fast computer results mean everything else can wait until the score appears. Recommendation letters, personal statements and financial documents then get squeezed into days rather than weeks. A second trap is mismatched identity documents after a passport renewal. A third is treating a screenshot of the results page as an official record, when universities want the report file or a direct delivery from the provider.
Once the score is visible, check the spelling of your name, the document number, date of birth and the test type on the report. Errors need to reach the test centre early, because corrections take longer the further the date recedes. Then compare the overall band and each skill against the specific requirements of your course, as some programmes set a separate writing minimum. Save a copy of the eTRF once downloading opens, name the file with the test date, and confirm that direct deliveries have been received.
