A Level、IB 文凭、BTEC、苏格兰 Highers、T Level、Access to HE
What decides a UK undergraduate offer is less about which course a student picks than about whether that qualification is accepted for the subject as an equivalent route. A Levels, the IB Diploma, BTEC Nationals, Scottish Highers, T Levels and Access to HE all sit inside the same UCAS Tariff framework, yet their assessment structures, subject counts, grading methods and offer formats differ sharply. This article sets out the three routes families ask about most often: the linear A Level, the IB Diploma with its six subjects and core, and the foundation and access routes open to students without A Levels. Each point names the official source worth checking, so decisions rest on current published rules rather than last year's forum posts.
An A Level is a set of separate subject certificates, usually three or four taken over two years, and universities review them subject by subject. The IB Diploma arrives as one integrated qualification in which six subjects and the core are scored together, so a weak subject pulls the total down. BTEC Nationals, T Levels and Scottish Highers work on a different logic again, where the overall grade and the content coverage of the course matter most. All three compete inside the same application, yet admissions staff read them differently; subject combinations matter more than how many subjects a student carries, and four A Levels that drop maths will not rescue a competitive economics or computing application.
A Level
Linear A Levels were phased in across England in three waves from September 2015, starting with thirteen subjects including English and the sciences, while maths and further maths followed from September 2017. Modules disappeared, January exam sessions ended, and all assessment now sits at the close of the two-year course, with the weighting of each paper and its assessment objectives written into the awarding body's specification. AS Levels still exist as standalone qualifications, but those results no longer count towards the A Level grade. A strong AS year therefore offers no safety net, and students who leave revision until Year 13 usually find that Year 12 content still carries marks in the final papers.
Six grades run from A* down to E, and the top grade has never been a straightforward total-mark cut. Under the modular system a candidate first had to secure an A overall, then reach 90% of the available UMS across the A2 units, with both conditions required at the same time. Since the linear reforms each awarding body states its own additional requirement in the specification, usually tied to the hardest part of the assessment, and Ofqual publishes the wider rules on how grades are set. Grade boundaries appear on results day and are not fixed in advance, which limits what a mock result can tell a student about the final outcome.
The IB Diploma requires six subjects, three or four of them at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level, each graded 1 to 7 for a subject maximum of 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay sit in the core and together add up to three more points, taking the ceiling to 45. The IBO website sets the award conditions: at least 24 points overall, plus additional requirements covering completion of CAS and limits on how weak individual grades may be. Because the six subjects span language, maths, science, individuals and societies, and the arts, no candidate can carry the diploma on one strength alone.
UCAS Tariff
BTEC 三级扩展文凭 DDD 记 144 分,D*D*D* 记 168 分,与三门 A Level 全 A* 落在同一档;T Level 的 Distinction* 同样记 168 分;苏格兰 Higher 的 A 记 33 分。
Since 2017 the UCAS Tariff has converted different qualifications onto one numeric scale: an A* at A Level is worth 56 points, an A 48, and each grade below drops by eight down to 16 for an E. An IB Higher Level 7 also carries 56 points, Higher Level 6 carries 48 and Higher Level 5 carries 32, with Standard Level grades worth roughly half and up to 12 points available from the TOK and Extended Essay core. A BTEC National Extended Diploma at DDD is worth 144 points and D*D*D* 168, which matches three A* grades at A Level, while a T Level Distinction* also sits at 168 and a Scottish Higher at grade A carries 33. Tariff totals only apply where a course writes its offer in points.
Offers usually come in one of two shapes: three A Levels at AAB including an A in maths, or an IB total of 36 with a 6 in Higher Level maths, and both put the named subject first. Economics, engineering, medicine and computing set hard grades in maths or a science, and a higher total elsewhere does not replace the missing subject. GCSE requirements appear in the same paragraph, so a weak grade in English or maths can block an offer even when the A Levels look strong. Because these conditions are published alongside the A Level grades, a resit squeezed into the final year creates a timing problem rather than a second chance.
Access to HE
Students without A Levels or the IB Diploma take a different lane. A foundation year normally forms the first year of a four-year degree, with progression into year one of a linked course, and it appears most often in engineering and computing where maths and physics are prerequisites. The Access to HE Diploma is designed for adult learners, typically applicants aged 19 and over, and serves as the formal route back into undergraduate study with content built around the destination subject. Both routes judge overall performance on the course and its progression agreement rather than one subject grade, so the link to the target degree is the detail worth confirming before applying.
International applicants face a language condition and a visa condition on top of their academic qualifications. Undergraduate English requirements commonly run from IELTS 6.0 to 7.5, with medicine and law sitting at the higher end, and each course page lists the accepted tests, the minimum score in each component and how long a result stays valid. The visa side needs a CAS and evidence of funds, with course level and age rules set out on the gov.uk student visa pages. The two are linked in practice, because the language result feeds straight into when a CAS can be issued, so a late test pushes the whole visa timetable back.
Three practical tests help a family choose between routes. Subject rigidity comes first: if the target course demands maths or a science, three A Levels align with that requirement most precisely, while the IB route depends on picking the right Higher Level subjects. Assessment structure comes second, since both routes rest on final exams but the IB adds the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and internal assessments that reward steady output over a late push. Tolerance for a single bad result comes third, because one weak A Level drags the grade profile down, whereas the six IB subjects spread the risk while still tying a grade of 4 or below to the diploma total.
Three misjudgements repeat every cycle. A familiar course title does not guarantee equivalent standing, because the subject combination at A Level and the Higher Level choices in the IB decide how well an application fits a course. A high score elsewhere rarely patches a missing subject, since most departments will not accept an extra strong grade in place of a named requirement, and medicine and engineering enforce this most strictly. A foundation year is not a demotion either; for a student changing direction it is often the shortest bridge, provided the progression link to the target degree is confirmed before applying.
The timeline follows dates published on the UCAS website, and a single missed day is expensive. For 2027 entry the two main deadlines are 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses, and 13 January 2027 for most other undergraduate courses, both at 18:00 UK time. Working backwards, registration opens in May, applications can be submitted from early September, admissions tests fall in October, written work goes in during November, interviews run in December and decisions arrive in January. A reference has to be in place before submission, so assembling documents early matters more than polishing a final paragraph on the deadline.
