AQA GCSE
Electricity carries the largest single block of marks in AQA GCSE Physics 8463, and Paper 1 tests Energy, Electricity, Particle model of matter and Atomic structure in one paper of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 100 marks, half of the GCSE. The marks lost in circuit questions are rarely lost to algebra; they go on unit conversions, on ammeters and voltmeters wired into the wrong place, and on graphs described from memory instead of from the shape printed on the page. The sections below follow the specification order, and both required practicals are covered step by step.
1. 电荷、电流与 Q = It
电荷量、电流与时间的关系写成 Q = It,其中电荷量 Q 用库仑 C,电流 I 用安培 A,时间 t 用秒 s。
Electric current is the rate of flow of electrical charge, and charge flow is calculated with Q = It, where Q is measured in coulombs, I in amperes and t in seconds. Exam questions routinely hide the conversion: a current of 250 mA has to be entered as 0.25 A, and a time of 2 minutes as 120 s. In a single closed loop the current is the same at every point, so an ammeter placed before a lamp reads exactly what an ammeter after it reads.
2. 电阻与 V = IR
电压、电流与电阻的关系是 V = I R,也可以写成 R = V / I 或 I = V / R。
Resistance measures how hard it is for charge to flow, and the link between potential difference, current and resistance is V = IR. A 6 V supply across a 3 ohm resistor drives 2 A, while the same supply across 6 ohms drives only 1 A, because a larger resistance gives a smaller current for the same potential difference. To measure resistance, a voltmeter goes in parallel with the component and an ammeter in series with it, and R = V / I follows from the two readings.
An ohmic conductor is one whose current is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, provided the temperature stays constant, so its I-V graph is a straight line through the origin. The steeper the line, the smaller the resistance, and the gradient gives a value that should match R = V / I at every plotted point. Because temperature changes resistance, a wire that heats up during a practical drifts away from the straight line, which is why the method specifies short bursts of current.
A filament lamp does not obey Ohm's law: as the current rises the filament gets hotter, its resistance increases and the curve flattens, so the graph is a shallow S rather than a straight line. A diode conducts in one direction only, and its reverse resistance is so high that the current is effectively zero, so putting one in an a.c. circuit gives a pulsating d.c. output. Sketch questions reward axes labelled with quantities and units, and examiners do not credit a lamp called ohmic simply because it contains metal.
A thermistor's resistance falls as its temperature rises, which is why it suits a thermostat, while an LDR's resistance falls as light intensity rises, which is why it suits an automatic street lamp. Neither component has a fixed resistance, so their characteristic curves move with the conditions rather than with the supply.
Required practical 3 asks you to build circuits from diagrams and investigate the factors that affect resistance: the length of a wire at constant temperature, and combinations of resistors in series and parallel. Plotting resistance against length of a uniform wire should give a straight line through the origin, because doubling the length doubles the resistance. For combinations, the measured total in series should match R1 + R2, while a parallel pair must come out smaller than the smallest single resistor, even though a formula for parallel values is not required.
Required practical 4 covers the I-V characteristics of a filament lamp, a diode and a resistor held at constant temperature. A variable resistor in series lets you sweep the potential difference in small steps while both meter readings are recorded, and plotting current against potential difference shows at a glance whether the element is linear. A diode must be tested in both orientations so that its very high reverse resistance becomes visible, and three readings are never enough for a curved characteristic.
In a series circuit there is a single path, so the current is the same through every component, while the supply voltage is shared between them and the individual voltages add up to the supply value. The total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances, which means adding components in series raises the total and lowers the current for a fixed supply. Work through the sums in a fixed order: total resistance first, then total current, then individual voltages from V = IR.
Components in parallel each have the same potential difference across them, equal to the supply voltage, and the total current from the supply is the sum of the branch currents, so every extra branch increases the current drawn. The combined resistance of two parallel resistors is always smaller than the smaller of the two, because the second branch opens an extra route for charge. Marks come from that qualitative explanation and from calculating each branch current separately.
The United Kingdom mains supply is alternating, at a frequency of 50 Hz and a potential difference of about 230 V, and most appliances are connected by three-core cable with the live wire insulated in brown, the neutral in blue and the earth in green and yellow stripes. The earth wire sits at 0 V and carries no current unless a fault occurs, while the live wire can still be dangerous even when a switch in the circuit is open. That is why the supply must be isolated before any repair, and why a direct connection between live and earth is a serious hazard.
P = I x I x R,也就是 P = I²R。
Electrical power is the rate at which energy is transferred, given by P = VI and also by P = I²R, so a 230 V kettle drawing 8.7 A transfers about 2000 J every second. Energy transferred depends on how long a device is switched on, E = Pt, and the same quantity can be written as E = QV for charge flowing through a potential difference. Marks are lost for quoting a value without a unit, or for using a rated power at a supply voltage the question never gave.
P = I x I x R,电流变小后线路损耗大幅下降。
The National Grid is a network of cables and transformers linking power stations to consumers, and in England and Wales the transmission network runs at 275 kV and 400 kV according to National Grid. Step-up transformers raise the potential difference for transmission and step-down transformers reduce it to a safe level near the user. Raising the voltage lowers the current for the same power, and because heating in the cables depends on I²R, the wasted power falls sharply; an ideal transformer changes voltage and current but never power.
Static electricity is produced when insulating materials are rubbed together and electrons transfer from one surface to the other, so one object ends up with an equal positive charge and the other with a negative charge. Like charges repel and unlike charges attract without contact, and a charged object sets up an electric field that is strongest close to it and weakens with distance. Field lines for an isolated charged sphere run radially outwards or inwards, and the same field idea explains sparking from fuel tankers and the need for earthing.
