AQA GCSE

Atomic structure opens Paper 1 of AQA GCSE Chemistry and returns in bonding, mole calculations and periodic trends later in the course; the questions are usually short, yet they appear on nearly every paper. Marks are rarely lost on the names of the particles, they are lost when atomic number, mass number, electron count and isotope are used interchangeably. This article follows the wording of the AQA GCSE Chemistry (8462) specification, section 4.1.1, and sets out eight blocks of content with the errors that cost marks most often.

The early model changed because new evidence refused to fit the old picture; Dalton's solid spheres could not explain what came out of cathode ray tubes, so Thomson suggested a pudding-like atom with positive charge and electrons spread evenly through it. The gold foil scattering work of 1909 to 1911, run by Geiger and Marsden under Rutherford, showed almost every alpha particle passing straight through while a few bounced back, which only makes sense if positive charge and nearly all the mass sit in a tiny nucleus; Bohr then put electrons into shells in 1913, and Chadwick confirmed the neutron in 1932. AQA expects you to explain how and why the model changed, so a question may hand you an observation and want the matching model named. Many students assume the experiment photographed a nucleus; the conclusion came from counting rare large-angle deflections recorded as brief flashes on a screen, and separating the observation from the deduction in your answer usually earns both marks.

An atom holds protons and neutrons packed into the nucleus, with electrons occupying shells around it; a proton carries one unit of positive charge, a neutron carries none, and an electron carries one unit of negative charge. The relative mass of a proton and a neutron is 1, while an electron is about 1/1836 of that and can be ignored in calculations. The atomic number is the proton count and it fixes the element, whereas the mass number adds protons and neutrons together, so two atoms of the same element can carry different numbers of neutrons. In a neutral atom the proton and electron counts match, which means 17 protons and 20 neutrons give a mass number of 37 with 17 electrons, and the same particle carrying one unit of negative charge has gained an electron and now holds 18. In symbol notation the atomic number sits at the lower left of the element symbol and the mass number at the upper left; swapping the two is the mistake marked most often, and reading 37 as the number of neutrons ignores the protons still sitting in the nucleus.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with equal proton counts and different neutron counts, so their chemical behaviour is almost identical while their mass numbers differ; chlorine, for example, exists as chlorine-35 and chlorine-37, both with 17 protons but with 18 and 20 neutrons respectively. The relative atomic mass is a weighted average rather than a whole number picked off a data sheet, and the weights are the natural abundances. Written out, Ar equals the sum of each isotope's mass number multiplied by its abundance percentage, divided by 100; with chlorine-35 at about 75% and chlorine-37 at about 25%, that gives (35 x 75 + 37 x 25) / 100 = 35.5. Copper behaves the same way, copper-63 at roughly 69% and copper-65 at roughly 31% giving about 63.5. Many students simply average the two mass numbers, land on 36 or 64, and lose the mark because the abundance weighting has disappeared from the working.

AQA only asks for the electronic structure of the first twenty elements, with two electrons filling the first shell and up to eight in each of the next two; sodium is written 2,8,1, chlorine as 2,8,7 and argon as 2,8,8. The electrons in the outermost shell fix the group for main group elements, so sodium sits in group 1 and chlorine in group 7, while the number of occupied shells fixes the period, putting both of them in period 3. Those two rules are what link atomic structure to the layout of the periodic table and explain why elements in one group behave alike; a quick check before you move on is to add your shell numbers and see whether the total matches the proton count, then count the shells and compare with the period. A common mistake is writing the total electron count instead of the structure, so chlorine becomes 17 or neon becomes 2,8,8,2 with a shell too many.

Ions are charged particles, and an atom becomes one by gaining or losing electrons while the proton count stays exactly the same; metals with only a few outer electrons tend to lose them and become positive ions, whereas non-metals close to a full shell tend to gain electrons and become negative ions. Magnesium, with the structure 2,8,2, loses its two outer electrons to become Mg2+, ending up with 2,8 like neon, while oxygen at 2,6 gains two electrons to become O2- with the same 2,8 arrangement. The charge is written at the upper right of the symbol with the number before the sign, so Mg2+ is correct and Mg+2 is not, and the size of the charge always matches the number of electrons gained or lost. Many students change the proton count as well and invent ions such as Mg4+, which score nothing because the number of protons fixes the element and only electrons move.

Once the relative atomic mass of each element is known, the relative formula mass comes from adding them up in the formula, so MgCO3 works out at 24 + 12 + 3 x 16 = 84. On heating it decomposes as MgCO3 -> MgO + CO2, and the masses balance as 84 -> 40 + 44, which is not a coincidence: atoms are rearranged in a chemical change rather than created or destroyed, so the total mass before and after stays the same. Questions often ask why the solid loses mass when heated in an open crucible, and the answer is that carbon dioxide escapes into the air, whereas a sealed container would show no change at all. If the numbers in a question refuse to balance, check the equation first and then look for a product whose mass has been left out. Many students read conservation of mass as conservation of mass number, or watch only the solid and forget the gas, which is exactly where explanation marks disappear.

The AQA specification asks you to compare the size of an atom with the size of its nucleus, and a typical atom has a radius of about 0.1 nm, that is 1 x 10^-10 m, while the nucleus has a radius less than one ten-thousandth of that, around 1 x 10^-14 m. Put those two figures together and most of an atom turns out to be empty space, with electrons moving far from a nucleus that holds nearly all the mass; standard form is compulsory here, so 0.0000000001 m has to be written as 1 x 10^-10 m, and a question may ask you to convert the other way for the nucleus. Units need watching as well, so a figure given in nanometres has to be changed into metres before any comparison. Many students assume the nucleus takes up most of the volume of an atom, yet the two radii differ by a factor of ten thousand and the volumes differ far more, which is why the true-or-false items in this section often catch them out.

Reading the papers together, the lost marks cluster in four places: the atomic number and mass number swapped in symbol notation, or the mass number handed in as if it were the neutron count; the definition of an isotope given as atoms with different proton numbers when it should be the same proton number with different neutrons; electronic structure written as a total electron count or pushed past eight in the third shell, forgetting that the first twenty elements stop at 2,8,8; and the relative atomic mass averaged without any weighting. A workable habit is to sketch three columns on rough paper for protons, neutrons and electrons, fill in what the question gives you, use the relationships to complete the missing column, then read again to see which number is actually wanted. The blank answers examiners collect are usually not a failure of arithmetic but a misreading of neutron count as mass number, so drilling those three columns before the exam pays off more than rereading definitions.
