AQA GCSE
Cell biology opens the AQA GCSE Biology specification and appears early in Paper 1; the chapter looks like labelling practice, yet it tests drawing, unit conversion, graph reading and extended writing. This walkthrough follows 4.1.1 to 4.1.3 in specification order, so the calculation rules and the required practicals sit beside the structures they belong to. A dedicated cell biology question appears in Paper 1 in every series.
In AQA GCSE Biology 8461, cell biology is Topic 4.1 and sits inside Paper 1; that paper covers Topics 1 to 4 and is worth 100 marks in 1 hour 45 minutes, matching Paper 2, with Foundation and Higher both available. The topic splits into 4.1.1 cell structure, 4.1.2 cell division and 4.1.3 transport in cells, so one revision block has to carry labelling, calculation and explanation at once. Naming a structure correctly and then describing its job with the wrong wording earns nothing on the mark scheme.
Plant and animal cells are eukaryotic, which means their genetic material sits inside a nucleus enclosed by a membrane; bacteria are prokaryotic and much smaller, with cytoplasm and a cell membrane surrounded by a cell wall. Their genetic material is a single DNA loop rather than a nucleus-bound set of chromosomes, and many bacteria also carry one or more small rings known as plasmids; the specification asks for order-of-magnitude reasoning and standard form, not just a list of labels. Treating a plasmid as a second nucleus, or assuming every cell wall is made of cellulose, is where marks go missing.
Most animal cells share five structures; the nucleus holds the genetic material and controls the cell's activities, the cytoplasm is where reactions happen, the cell membrane controls what enters and leaves, mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration, and ribosomes are where proteins are synthesised. Function questions need a verb rather than a label, so writing that mitochondria make energy drifts from the wording AQA prints, which is that respiration releases energy; the same five structures appear in plant cells as well. Learning the specification phrasing pays off more than a textbook paraphrase.
Plant cells add three things to the shared set; chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and absorb light energy for photosynthesis, a permanent vacuole filled with cell sap helps the cell keep its shape, and a cell wall made of cellulose gives strength and support. The specification ties the cell wall to plant and algal cells, which is easy to overlook; a root cell has no chloroplasts because no light reaches it, and image questions use that exception regularly. A correctly named structure attached to the wrong place still loses the mark.
Required practical 1 is where students use a light microscope to observe, draw and label plant and animal cells, and the official wording adds a detail that is easy to miss; a magnification scale must be included, with AT 1 and AT 7 assessed. The order of work matters, since the lowest power objective finds the field of view first and the fine focus is used on high power to avoid cracking the slide; unbroken pencil lines are what the mark scheme expects. The marks sit in proportion and labelling rather than artistic shading.
The formula is magnification equals size of image divided by size of real object, so any two values fix the third; an image width of 30 mm for a real width of 0.05 mm gives a magnification of 600, which is 6 x 10^2 in standard form. Unit conversion is where those marks disappear, because 1 mm equals 1000 micrometres and 1 micrometre equals 1000 nanometres, and the prefix list centi, milli, micro and nano is examinable. Rearranging for real size produces very small numbers, which is exactly why standard form is asked for.
Magnification and resolution are the two words that separate light microscopes from electron microscopes; resolution is the smallest distance at which two close points stay apart, and a light microscope is limited to roughly 0.2 micrometres, so the internal folds of a mitochondrion stay blurred. Electron microscopes reach far higher magnification and resolving power, and that is what let biologists see sub-cellular structures such as ribosomes; the specification stops at that level. Writing only that magnification is higher misses the point of a question asking why finer detail became visible.
Differentiation turns a cell into a specialised type, and the specialised structure is what earns the mark when it is paired with a function; a sperm cell keeps many mitochondria for swimming and a tail for movement, a nerve cell is long and carries impulses, and a root hair cell extends a thin projection that raises the surface area for water uptake. Xylem cells are hollow and strengthened for transport, phloem cells have perforated end walls for sugars, and muscle cells are packed with fibres that contract. Many students believe differentiation rewrites the genetic material, but the DNA stays the same and what changes is which genes are active.
Chromosomes inside the nucleus are made of DNA, and each one carries a large number of genes; body cells hold chromosomes in pairs, with 23 pairs in a human body cell, while gametes carry a single set of 23, so the number returns to pairs after fertilisation. A gene is a length of DNA that codes for a protein, and characteristics come from genes working with the environment; the specification keeps to this level and does not require base pairing. Answering with 46 pairs instead of 46 chromosomes is exactly the slip a one-mark question is built to catch.
Before a cell divides it grows, increases the number of sub-cellular structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria, and replicates its DNA so that two copies of each chromosome exist; in mitosis one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end, the nucleus divides, and then the cytoplasm and cell membranes separate to give two genetically identical cells. These stages together form the cell cycle, and mitosis is one part of it rather than the whole story. Growth, the repair of damaged tissue and asexual reproduction all rest on this process, which is also why cloning can start from a single cell.
A stem cell is undifferentiated; it can divide to give more of the same type and differentiate into other cell types, which is what makes it useful in medicine. Embryonic stem cells can become most human cell types, stem cells from adult bone marrow form several types including blood cells, and meristem tissue in plants can produce any plant cell; therapeutic cloning places a patient's own nucleus into an emptied egg cell so the resulting cells should not be rejected. The ethical argument turns on where embryos come from and how they are used, so both sides are needed rather than one settled answer.
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles in solution or in a gas, with a net movement from higher to lower concentration; four factors change the rate, and they are the concentration gradient, temperature, the surface area of the membrane and the distance particles must travel. A single-celled organism has such a large surface area to volume ratio that diffusion alone supplies its needs; a cube with 1 cm edges gives a ratio of 6 to 1 while 3 cm edges give only 2 to 1, which is why cells stay small. Multicellular organisms rely on surfaces such as gills, alveoli and villi, which combine a large area with a thin barrier and a good blood supply.
实验技能 AT 1、AT 3 与 AT 5 都在这一题里考。
Osmosis is the movement of water through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a concentrated one; required practical 3 places potato cylinders in a range of salt or sugar concentrations and compares mass before and after, then plots the percentage change. The point where the curve crosses zero marks the concentration that matches the cell sap, while cylinders in stronger solutions lose water, become flaccid and shrink in mass. Failing to blot the surface dry before weighing, or drawing conclusions from a single cylinder, are the two usual sources of unreliable results.
Active transport moves substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated one, which runs against the concentration gradient, so energy from respiration has to be supplied. Root hair cells take up mineral ions from very dilute soil solutions this way, and the gut absorbs sugar into blood that already holds a higher sugar concentration, after which the sugar is respired; three signals identify the process, since it runs uphill, needs energy and uses carrier proteins in the membrane. Adding a respiratory inhibitor stops uptake against the gradient, which is the evidence such questions expect.
