Revision for macroeconomics is less about memorising definitions than about linking models, policy and UK evidence into one argument. The Edexcel 9EC0 specification was first taught in 2015 and first examined in 2017, and Paper 2 gives two hours to draw, calculate and evaluate. What follows walks through the core topics in the order they tend to appear, with the mistakes that cost marks and the moves that earn them.
Macroeconomics in Edexcel 9EC0 starts from the circular flow, where households, firms, the government and the overseas sector are linked by flows of income and spending; leakages such as saving, taxation and imports drain demand, while injections of investment, government spending and exports add to it. Adding the four spending components gives aggregate demand, AD = C + I + G + (X - M). Candidates lose marks most often by confusing a movement along the AD curve with a shift of it, and the test is simple: if total spending changes at an unchanged price level the curve shifts, whereas a change in the price level alone only moves you along the existing curve. In practice, examiners want the diagram label, the direction of the shift and one sentence of explanation before any analysis begins.
Aggregate supply splits into a short-run curve that slopes upwards because wages and other input prices are sticky, and a vertical long-run curve that marks potential output on the production possibility boundary. When short-run equilibrium output sits above potential, the economy carries a positive output gap and demand-pull pressure on prices, whereas below potential the gap is negative and unemployment tends to rise. Each curve moves for its own reasons, with AD driven by consumption, investment, government spending and net exports, SRAS by costs and productivity, and LRAS by the quantity and quality of labour and capital. Many answers treat a currency depreciation as a simple rightward shift of AD, yet imported raw materials become dearer at the same time and SRAS shifts left as well.
The multiplier measures how far an initial injection expands aggregate demand, and its simplest form is k = 1 / (1 - MPC), so a higher marginal propensity to consume produces a larger multiplier. With an MPC of 0.8 and saving as the only leakage the multiplier is 5, meaning a 2 billion pound injection of government investment would raise demand by 10 billion; once taxation and imports are included, a form such as 1 / (1 - MPC(1 - t) + MPM) fits a UK open economy better. Marks are lost less on the arithmetic than on the direction of the change, since weaker papers label the final increase as the injection itself. A common mistake is to treat the multiplier as a fixed constant and ignore spare capacity, for when the economy is close to full capacity the effect on real output shrinks and the price level absorbs more of it.
Inflation is measured by the consumer prices index, and the official target of 2% is set by the government in the remit it hands to the Bank of England each year. Demand-pull inflation comes from a rightward shift of AD while cost-push inflation comes from a leftward shift of SRAS, and the two call for opposite policy responses. Because CPI excludes owner-occupied housing costs, candidates should not treat it as interchangeable with RPI, which lost its status as a national statistic in 2013. A wage-price spiral forms when each side tries to stay ahead of the other, and once expectations harden the cost of bringing inflation down rises; the standard evaluation move is to separate winners from losers, since savers on fixed incomes lose while borrowers often gain.
Unemployment can be measured in two ways: the Labour Force Survey definition used by the International Labour Organization is the broader one, while the claimant count tracks those actually claiming benefit and is sensitive to eligibility rules. Cyclical unemployment follows a shortfall in aggregate demand, frictional unemployment reflects the time taken to change jobs, structural unemployment comes from a mismatch between skills and vacancies, and seasonal unemployment clusters in tourism and agriculture. Voluntary and search unemployment persist even in a strong labour market, which is why the natural rate never falls to zero; the short-run trade-off shown by the Phillips curve disappears in the long run once expectations adjust. Many answers treat a falling unemployment rate as unambiguous good news and forget the participation rate, because people who leave the labour force are not counted as unemployed.
Fiscal policy works through government spending and taxation, where the multiplier and automatic stabilisers operate side by side, while monetary policy is set by the Monetary Policy Committee, which has met eight times a year since 2016 and can use asset purchases to push long-term interest rates down. Supply-side measures raise potential output instead, and though education, training and infrastructure take years to pay off they sit comfortably alongside the inflation target. Conflicts appear between objectives rather than between instruments: faster growth can lift inflation and cutting unemployment can widen the current account deficit. Novices often reverse the lags, since fiscal policy has a long decision lag but a quick implementation lag while monetary policy is the other way round; good evaluation names the specific objectives and the time horizon under discussion.
Paper 2 25
Paper 2 covers the national and global economy, lasts two hours and carries 100 marks drawn from Themes 2 and 4; the 25-mark essay splits into knowledge and application, analysis, and evaluation. Diagrams, definitions and applied data carry the first two, while judgement and trade-offs carry the last, so leaving evaluation until a final paragraph usually caps an answer in the middle band. Candidates also under-read the command word, because explain only demands a clear mechanism whereas evaluate demands a supported judgement, and naming a policy, a year or a figure earns credit more reliably than repeating a textbook sentence.
Economic growth is usually reported as the annual percentage change in real GDP, so nominal figures must be deflated before any comparison. Totals hide population and price differences, which is why living standards are compared through real GDP per head converted at purchasing power parity; GDP also leaves out unpaid housework, ignores the black economy and says nothing about environmental damage or how the income is shared. GNI adds cross-border factor income, and for a country such as the UK, with large overseas investments, the gap between the two measures is far from trivial. Judgement carries more weight when the argument turns on sustainability, since a higher growth rate today may rest on resource depletion and pollution that later years have to pay for.
