Three decisions still move your mark on exam day: when you arrive, which question you start with, and how the last twenty minutes get used. Content is largely fixed by then; timing is not, and papers that mix long and short questions show the difference fastest. None of the steps below requires new knowledge, only a decision made in advance.
JCQ ICE, which governs examinations between September 2025 and August 2026, sets published starting times of 9.00am and 1.30pm, and centres may shift them by up to thirty minutes either way without asking the awarding body. That window belongs to the school rather than to the candidate; two centres can therefore start the same paper half an hour apart. Arriving fifty minutes before the published time turns the equipment check into a calm routine instead of a scramble.
JCQ《Information for candidates: Written exams》(2025-2026)
JCQ's 2025-2026 written exam rules ban more than most candidates expect: notes, earphones or earbuds, smart glasses, tablets, mobile phones, and watches of any kind, including analogue and digital ones. Pencil cases have to be see-through, and correction fluid, tape, erasable pens, highlighters and gel pens are all off limits; answers must be written clearly in black ink, with coloured pens reserved for diagrams. Possession counts as a rule break whether or not you intended to use the item.
JCQ also sets an arrival rule worth memorising: be at the room at least ten minutes before the start, report to the invigilator if you are late, and note that arriving more than an hour after the published starting time may mean you are not allowed to sit the paper at all. Leaving carries its own restriction, because a candidate who exits without an invigilator cannot come back in, and feeling unwell or finishing early both start with raising a hand.
JCQ《Information for candidates: Written exams》(2025-2026)
JCQ's 2025-2026 candidate guidance is blunt: before the invigilator announces the start, you may complete the cover details and nothing else. Do not open the paper and do not begin writing. Three minutes of careful cover work protects your script from being mislaid later, because illegible or missing candidate numbers cause real problems at the scanning stage.
Five minutes spent sorting the paper beats five minutes spent writing. Mark each question as immediate, multi-step, or unclear, then work strictly in that order. Examiners watch capable candidates drop short-answer marks because one long question early in the paper swallowed everything that followed it.
Divide total marks by available minutes and you get a working rate: ninety minutes for eighty marks is roughly 0.9 marks a minute, so a six-mark question deserves about seven minutes and never more than fourteen. Treat that figure as a tripwire rather than a stopwatch. Non-calculator papers run slower, and a long final question usually earns a fixed block of time instead of an averaged share.
Ninety seconds without a new usable step is the signal to move on: write down what you have, circle the number, and return later. Progress means a formula or a diagram on the page, not another reading of the same numbers. Blank answers cost more than imperfect ones, and the return visit should start with the questions you can finish fastest.
A racing heart and shaky hands respond to breathing rate rather than to self-scolding: four seconds in, two held, six out, repeated four times, settles most people inside two minutes. Rest breaks can be arranged through JCQ access arrangements where a diagnosed need is documented, but the application is completed before the series rather than on the day.
Twenty minutes of checking runs in three passes: arithmetic and units first, missed part-questions second, answer numbering and booklet links last. Unit slips and dropped (ii) parts are where marks vanish quietly, and candidates who merely re-read whole questions rarely recover them. Format problems come last because they are the cheapest to correct once the mathematics is sound.
JCQ《Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments》(2025)
Extra time is the most common access arrangement for GCSE, AS and A level, with 25% the usual amount; it requires standardised scores plus evidence of normal way of working, recorded on Form 8 before the series. Anything above 25% needs fresh assessment when a candidate moves from GCSE to A level. Do not extend your own time, because JCQ rules on late finishing are explicit and work done after the permitted period may be disregarded.
Between papers, comparing answers is the fastest way to carry one mistake into the next exam; eat, walk, and rest instead. For the afternoon paper, review formula sheets and unit conversions only, leaving any debrief until the series is over; centres may begin that session as early as 1.00pm, so the lunch break is shorter than it looks.
