The LNAT is a two-hour-fifteen-minute reasoning test rather than a law exam: 42 multiple-choice questions on twelve argumentative passages in 95 minutes, then one essay chosen from three prompts in 40 minutes. For 2027 entry Oxford and Cambridge open registration on 1 August 2026, close it on 15 September and require the test to be taken by 15 October, while the remaining consortium universities work to later deadlines. The plan below is ordered by month, and it covers both what each section measures and how the December interviews press on your answers.
The test runs 2 hours 15 minutes in two sections. Section A asks 42 multiple-choice questions drawn from twelve argumentative passages, three or four questions per passage, in 95 minutes; once you begin Section B you cannot go back, so Section A gets exactly one review. Section B then gives you 40 minutes for one essay from a choice of three, judged on economy of argument, a clear conclusion and a good command of written English. Accuracy usually collapses after the eighth passage, and the usual cause is time spent sitting on the first few.
The reading questions fall into five recognisable groups: the author's main conclusion, an unstated assumption, a fact that would strengthen or weaken the argument, a defensible inference, and the author's tone. All five separate what the writer actually says from what the writer wants you to accept; a common mistake is filling a gap with your own general knowledge, which produces an answer that reads smoothly but has no textual support. Marking the conclusion sentence of each passage before reading the options is the quickest way to cut the plausible-but-wrong choices.
Divide the 95 minutes into three blocks: roughly 25 minutes reading the twelve passages, 60 minutes answering, and a final 10 minutes reviewing flagged questions. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so nothing should be left blank; the software allows you to revisit your choices at any time before you move on. Five minutes spent stubbornly on one item is time taken from three easier ones, so flag it, choose, and return if the clock allows. A drill that beats volume: take two passages a day, do the first untimed and write down why each wrong option fails, then do the second against the clock at roughly two and a half minutes per question.
Twenty minutes a day on one opinion article is enough for this: summarise the author's claim in a single sentence, then write down the premise they never state. Newspaper leader columns, letters pages, book reviews and popular science commentary all work, and the topic matters far less than whether your own summary survives a counter-example afterwards.
Section B
Spend the first five of the 40 minutes deciding your position and two or three supporting points, then state it in the opening lines. Give each body paragraph one reason with a concrete example, devote one paragraph to the strongest counter-argument and answer it, and close with a short conclusion. Cambridge marks the essay centrally, while Oxford and other consortium universities read it alongside the Section A score, so the same text has to work for both audiences. A frequent weakness is a vivid example standing in for the argument, leaving the reader unsure what claim is being defended.
Spread the work across three months rather than two weeks. Registration opens on 1 August, and booking early matters because October slots at Pearson VUE centres in China fill well before the deadline; sit one official practice test in early September as a diagnostic, rank your weak question types, then keep a weekly routine of two passages and one timed essay. Oxford and Cambridge close registration on 15 September and require the test by 15 October 2026, while the other consortium universities run into December and January. Leaving the booking to the final days is the most avoidable mistake in the process.
Two timed passages and one timed essay a week comes to about two hours; repeat the official practice test in early October and compare it with the September diagnostic to see which question type still costs you marks.
Oxford interviews for 2027 entry take place online in early to mid-December 2026, with invitations usually sent from mid-November and sometimes only a week in advance. Law candidates are often sent a short text beforehand; the useful preparation is understanding rather than research, so summarise the central claim in one sentence and prepare a single objection to it. Arriving with a question you genuinely want answered works better than reciting a prepared opinion.
Law interviews are built on challenge; a tutor offers a counter-example and watches what you do with it. The test is whether you can separate reasons from conclusions, keeping the point and narrowing the claim when the reasoning holds, or conceding openly when it does not. Repeating the original position in a firmer voice adds nothing, whereas changing your mind and explaining why reads as intellectual honesty.
A-level Law
Neither Oxford nor Cambridge requires A-level Law; Oxford's course page notes only that an essay-based subject can be helpful without being required, and Cambridge names no specific subjects. Reading, reasoning and writing are what the LNAT and the interview actually measure, which explains why essay subjects such as English Literature, History and Economics appear so often in the choices of successful applicants. If you enjoy Law at school, that is a reason to keep it; it is not a reason to drop a subject you are better at.
