Most students treat the Periodic Table as a memorising task, then lose marks on the reasoning questions hidden behind it. In the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry specification (4CH1, Issue 3, September 2024) the Periodic Table sits in Topic 1 as items 1.18 to 1.24, while the Group 1 and Group 7 trends appear later in Topic 2 as 2.1 to 2.8C; items without a C reference can appear on both papers, and the C items are only tested in Paper 2C. What examiners actually reward is the chain that connects an element's position, its electron configuration and its behaviour in a reaction, so the sections below work through that chain item by item.

The Periodic Table is a small slice of a 180-mark qualification, yet it underpins most of the inorganic reasoning used later in the course. Paper 1C runs for 2 hours and carries 110 marks at 61.1%, testing only content that is not bold and has no C reference; Paper 2C runs for 1 hour 15 minutes and carries 70 marks at 38.9%, testing everything including the bold and C material. Items 1.18 to 1.24 fall inside the first paper, while the only Periodic Table items reserved for Paper 2C are 2.4C and 2.8C on electronic configurations, and the official 4CH1 weightings put AO1 and AO2 at roughly 38% to 42% each against 19% to 21% for AO3. Candidates who revise the C explanations as if everyone needed them spend time on Paper 1C without collecting any marks for it.

The arrangement itself is item 1.18: elements run in order of increasing atomic number, which is the number of protons in the nucleus, with vertical columns called groups and horizontal rows called periods; that layout places elements with the same number of outer-shell electrons in the same column, which is the reason their chemistry matches. Mendeleev ordered his 1869 table by relative atomic mass and left gaps for elements he predicted, whereas the modern table uses atomic number and so removes the argon and potassium inconsistency. Watch the wording in answers, because swapping the words period and group loses the mark even when the chemistry is right.

The period number counts the electron shells, which is what makes a configuration easy to write. Period 1 holds only hydrogen and helium, Periods 2 and 3 hold eight elements each, and Period 4 begins with potassium; across the first 20 elements the shells fill as 2, 8, 8 and 2, so an element in Period 3 has three shells with up to eight electrons in the outer one. Item 1.19 asks candidates to deduce the configuration from the position rather than to memorise a table, and it stops at element 20, so the transition metal pattern is not required here. Examiners see the same slip every year, where a candidate treats the period number as the number of outer electrons.

For the main groups, a group number between 1 and 7 equals the number of outer-shell electrons, and Group 0 is the exception because its outer shell is already full. Item 1.22 ties a main group element's configuration to its position, so 2,8,1 identifies Period 3 Group 1 at a glance, and the reverse direction works just as well; oxygen, sitting in Period 2 Group 6, comes out as 2,6. Marks are lost on presentation as often as on chemistry, since a configuration written with dots instead of commas is not accepted.

Turning a position into a configuration is a two-step routine: count the period for the number of shells, then count the group for the outer electrons. Sodium, element 11 in Period 3 Group 1, fills its first two shells and becomes 2,8,1, while chlorine, element 17 in Period 3 Group 7, becomes 2,8,7 and sits one electron short of a full outer shell. Potassium opens Period 4 at 2,8,8,1 and calcium closes the first-20 set at 2,8,8,2, so the configuration items never reach the transition metals.

Deciding whether an element is a metal or a non-metal comes down to three pieces of evidence that examiners accept. Position is the quickest, with metals occupying the left and lower parts of the table and non-metals sitting towards the top right; electrical conductivity is the second, since metals conduct and non-metals other than graphite do not. The acid-base character of the oxide is the third, because metal oxides behave as bases while non-metal oxides such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are acidic, and item 1.20 expects the conductivity and oxide evidence rather than position alone.

Item 1.23 asks for a reason rather than a description, so the answer has to name the outer-shell electrons. Elements in the same group have the same number of outer-shell electrons, which means they gain or lose electrons in the same way and in the same number, and that is why their chemical properties match; Group 1 elements all lose their single outer electron to form a 1+ ion, while Group 7 elements all gain one electron to form a 1- ion. An answer that only states that the properties are similar, without mentioning the outer-shell electrons, normally scores nothing.

Group 0 has a single reason for its unreactivity, which is a full outer shell that leaves the atoms with no motive to lose or gain electrons. Helium holds 2 outer electrons and the rest of the group holds 8, so all of them sit at a stable configuration and exist as monatomic gases under ordinary conditions; item 1.24 wants that full-shell statement, and writing unreactive or stable merely restates the question. Because they do not react, these gases are used as inert atmospheres, and the argon inside a filament lamp is the classic classroom example.

The Group 1 metals all react with water to give hydrogen and an alkali, and that shared behaviour is the evidence for treating them as one family. Lithium floats and fizzes steadily, sodium melts into a ball that races across the surface, and potassium reacts so vigorously that it ignites; the equation for sodium is 2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2. Reactivity increases down the group, so item 2.3 expects a prediction that rubidium and caesium behave more violently still.

The three textbook halogens cover a gas, a liquid and a solid, so colour and physical state have to be secure before anything else. Chlorine is a pale yellow-green gas, bromine is a red-brown liquid that evaporates readily, and iodine is a grey-black solid that turns purple on heating; melting and boiling points rise down the group as the colour deepens. Displacement is the reaction that reveals the trend, because chlorine pushes bromine out of potassium bromide and iodine out of potassium iodide, while iodine cannot displace bromine.

Both trend explanations carry a C reference, which is why they are only assessed in Paper 2C. Group 1 reactivity rises down the group because the outer electron occupies a shell further from the nucleus and is therefore lost more easily, so potassium gives up its electron more readily than lithium; Group 7 reactivity falls because that outer shell is further away and attracts an incoming electron less strongly, which is why chlorine competes for electrons more aggressively than iodine. A strong answer writes the shell distance first, then the ease of gaining or losing an electron, states the trend last, and checks the direction of that trend before the paper is handed in.

Between 1.18 and 1.24 there are seven items, and adding the Group 1 and Group 7 items brings the Periodic Table content to under twenty statements, all of which can be rebuilt from position, configuration and trend. Rewriting each one as a single sentence of your own and checking it against the wording in the official spec is more useful than reading the chapter ten times.
