Edexcel GCSE History
Edexcel GCSE History (1HI0) is marked out of 168 across three papers, and eight of those marks are awarded for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology; the remaining marks reward whether an answer performs the action the question asks for, such as describing a feature, developing a consequence or judging an interpretation. Revision that only accumulates dates and names tends to stall around grade 5, because the examiner is looking for a described feature, a developed causal chain or a supported judgement rather than a longer list. The three families of questions below decide most grades: source questions, narrative and consequence questions, and the 16-mark interpretation judgement.
Paper 1 covers a thematic study and a historic environment, runs for 1 hour 20 minutes and carries 52 marks; Paper 2 combines a period study and a British depth study across two booklets, P and B, with 1 hour 50 minutes and 64 marks; Paper 3 is a modern depth study worth 52 marks in 1 hour 30 minutes. Together the three papers total 168 marks, and eight of those are SPaG marks attached to the 16-mark questions on Papers 1 and 3, which is why paragraphing and specialist terminology are worth rehearsing rather than assuming. Issue 6 of the Pearson specification, used for first teaching from September 2024 and first assessed in summer 2026, extended the papers to their current lengths, and Paper 2 has been split into two booklets since summer 2019 with 32 marks in each, so roughly 50 minutes per booklet is a sensible division.
Section A of Paper 1 spends all 16 of its marks on the historic environment, split between two short description questions worth 4 marks in total, an 8-mark source analysis and a 4-mark follow-up enquiry. The description marks are two features at 2 marks each, so a sentence naming the feature plus a sentence pinning it to a person, date or place is enough, and the most common loss is one feature expanded into a paragraph while the second is left half written. For the 8-mark analysis the marks sit in what the source itself allows you to infer rather than in background knowledge copied from a textbook, and the 4-mark enquiry wants a question worth asking next plus a line on what it would add.
这一块的英文术语是 usefulness of sources,题干里常写成 how useful。
Utility questions reward three separate things: what the content tells you, what the provenance restricts, and what the purpose of the source makes it likely to exaggerate or leave out. An answer that stops at the first, saying the source is useful because it shows people going hungry, has secured only part of the available marks; examiners watch for a comment on who produced the source and when, because a wartime government poster is far better evidence for what a government wanted people to believe than for casualty figures. Bias does not make a source useless, and in some enquiries the bias is the evidence, so the closing judgement needs a limit such as useful for an enquiry into civilian morale rather than a bare verdict.
Narrative questions in Booklet P carry 8 marks and are marked on the links between events rather than on length, so each step needs a time marker or a causal turn showing how one event pushed the situation towards the next. The recurring failure is two or three unconnected descriptions sitting side by side with no relationship drawn between them, which leaves the reader unable to see a sequence at all. A workable skeleton runs from the trigger and the background, through the turning point and the reactions of the different sides, to the outcome and its consequences, anchored by concrete dates such as the Berlin blockade of 1948, the airlift that followed and the formation of NATO in 1949.
Consequence questions in Booklet P come in two halves worth 8 marks in total, and each consequence earns full credit when it grows from a direct result into a further result rather than stopping at one sentence. Depth beats breadth here, so four consequences sketched in a single line each usually fall short, and the sharpest loss is two consequences that are really the same outcome described twice, such as an economy weakening and living standards falling. Keep consequence separate from significance: the first asks what changed, the second asks why that change mattered to a particular group or institution, and an answer that drifts into importance has answered a different question.
The 16-mark interpretation question appears as the last question of Paper 1 Section B, of Booklet B in Paper 2 and of Paper 3 Section B, and it is usually phrased as how far you agree; marks climb when the answer quotes both interpretations and locates where they diverge, then uses own knowledge to argue which is more convincing. Answers that ignore the interpretations and simply narrate what happened tend to sit in the middle bands, because the examiner is testing whether a judgement is supported rather than whether it matches their own view. Most disagreements between two interpretations are about causation or extent rather than about facts, so state that difference in one sentence first and keep the two interpretations in the same paragraph where they can be contrasted directly, since the SPaG marks attached to this question reward clear paragraphing and correctly capitalised proper nouns.
Both Paper 1 and Paper 3 attach 4 SPaG marks to a 16-mark question, which makes those eight marks the cheapest in the qualification because they follow from habit rather than extra revision. The marks track clear paragraphing, complete sentences, correctly capitalised proper nouns and accurate specialist terminology, and the usual losses come from an answer written as one unbroken block or from translated terms that no historian would use. Proper nouns transliterated from German or Russian, including Weimar, Bolshevik and Tsarist, are the ones students most often misspell, so they are worth copying out once before the exam.
Read together, the three papers reward rehearsal of a small set of moves: describe two features when the command word is describe, build two layers when the command word is consequence, and compare both interpretations before judging when the question asks how far you agree. Subject knowledge still has to be there, but it only converts into marks when it is attached to the right move, which is why checking the question stems against the Pearson Edexcel 1HI0 specification is worth more than another mock paper.
