Vocabulary size is rarely what separates international students as they move from GCSE to A-Level English writing; sentence accuracy, the way a paragraph develops an argument and the register you choose account for most of the marks that disappear. In AQA GCSE English Language 8700 each writing section is worth 40 marks, split into 24 for content and organisation and 16 for technical accuracy. By A-Level English Language 7702 writing has no separate mark at all; it is assessed through five objectives and a 3500-word non-exam assessment, which means the habits built at GCSE have to be carried into analysis rather than practised on their own.
GCSE 写作的分数拆解:24 分内容与 16 分技术准确性
AQA 8700 的成绩表把写作拆成两块:24 分看内容与组织,16 分看拼写、标点与句子结构。Edexcel 1EN0 Paper 2 的 Section B 同样是 40 分,24 分归 AO5,16 分归 AO6,评分表里写得很清楚。走剑桥国际路线的学生对应的是 CAIE IGCSE English as a Second Language
The mark scheme separates the writing sections into two blocks with different jobs. AQA 8700 gives 24 marks for content and organisation and 16 for technical accuracy, and Edexcel 1EN0 labels the same split inside its 40-mark transactional writing task as AO5 and AO6. Students following the Cambridge route sit the CAIE IGCSE English as a Second Language papers 0510 or 0511, where the syllabus for examination in 2024, 2025 and 2026 differs mainly in how speaking is reported; 0510 records it separately and 0511 counts it towards the grade. Since the two blocks reward different behaviour, one half of revision should be spent planning paragraphs and the other on re-reading finished sentences. A first draft handed in untouched, with comma splices and mismatched subjects still in it, quietly loses four to six marks from the smaller block. Proofreading time is the cheapest marks in the paper: no new material, no new ideas, only full stops and verb forms.
Technical accuracy comes down to three repeating faults: subject-verb agreement, tense control and punctuation. When a phrase slides between the subject and its verb the verb often takes the wrong form, so singular subjects still need singular verbs no matter how much material sits in between. Narrative tasks fix a tense for a reason, and drifting back into the present mid-paragraph is one of the errors examiners spot first. A comma cannot join two complete sentences; either break the sentence or supply and, but or because. Colon and semicolon use matters more at A-Level, where a colon introduces the explanation that follows and a semicolon holds two closely related clauses together. Checking three of your own sentences a day is enough, provided you are looking only for those faults.
While it is true that... 后面直接接 but 或 however 引出的反驳,中间不要绕。很多学生以为段落越多越好,阅卷时看的是段落内部有没有推进,四段能推进的段落胜过六段重复的段落。
PEEL gives GCSE writers a dependable shape: make the point, bring in evidence, explain it, then link back to the question. At A-Level the paragraph needs one more move, because a claim that ignores the strongest objection reads as one-sided, and answering that objection is what lifts a discussion out of the middle band. In an essay on social media, for instance, conceding that platforms widen access to information and then showing how recommendation systems narrow the range of views gives the conclusion weight. Concession has its own grammar: a construction such as While it is true that moves straight into the counter-claim, with no detour in between. Examiners read for internal development rather than paragraph count, so four advancing paragraphs do more work than six that repeat each other.
学术语域:把口语表达换成正式书面表达
语域是国际学生最容易忽略的一项。同一句话在口语和学术写作里差别很大,口语用 a lot of、get、things,学术写作换成 a considerable number of、obtain、factors。摘要题里出现缩写形式没人计较,议论文里写成 don't 或者 isn't 就属于语域不符。语气上还有一处差别,学术写作不靠反问句推动论证,也不用 you should 这样的祈使句下判断,改成第三人称陈述更稳。语域还有一层是名词化,口语说 they decided to expand the programme,学术写作写成 the decision to expand the programme,把动作收进名词里,句子能装下的信息立刻变多。改的办法很机械:把自己文章里的口语词圈出来逐个替换,再把两个短分句合并成一个长句。语域的档次就是这样一点点抬上来的。
Register is where international students lose marks without noticing. Choices such as a lot of, get and things belong in speech, and their academic equivalents are a considerable number of, obtain and factors. Contractions that nobody penalises in a summary task sit badly in a discursive essay, and rhetorical questions or the pronoun you weaken the tone of a formal argument. Nominalisation is the deeper register habit, turning they decided to expand the programme into the decision to expand the programme so a single clause can carry more information. The editing move is mechanical rather than creative: circle every colloquial item, replace it, then combine two short clauses into one longer sentence.
Cohesion is not the same thing as piling up linking words, which is why essays that open every sentence with However or In addition end up sounding mechanical. What holds a paragraph together is reference and lexical chains, where this proposal picks up the idea raised a moment earlier and one key noun, or its near-synonym, keeps recurring. A paragraph on exam pressure works better when it stays inside words such as exam pressure, stress and anxiety than when an informal item like trouble appears halfway through. Connectors earn their place only at real turning points, marking contrast or consequence, while ordinary sequence carries the rest. A useful test is to delete every connector and read the paragraph again; if it collapses, the fault was in the argument.
词汇搭配:把词用对比用难更重要
学术写作里被扣分的往往不是词太简单,而是词用得不搭。make a decision 正确,do a decision 就不成立;conduct research 可以,perform research 在英式学术写作里少见。这一层属于搭配问题,查单词词典看不出来,要靠读范文时把整个短语一起记下来,而不是只记单个生词。抽象形容词也容易用错位置,significant 在统计语境里指显著,拿来修饰一个人的努力就显得别扭。国际学生在论文里常用高级词覆盖不精确的地方,阅卷时这类替换通常不算加分,反而让句子更难读。
Collocation, not difficulty, is what separates accurate academic vocabulary from vocabulary that merely looks impressive. You make a decision rather than do one, and you conduct research rather than perform it, which is exactly the information a dictionary entry for the single word will not give you. The practical habit is to record whole phrases when reading a model answer instead of isolated items, and to leave abstract adjectives such as significant to the contexts that call for them. Piling in advanced words to cover a vague idea rarely earns credit and usually makes the sentence harder to follow.
A-Level 评估目标:AO1 到 AO5 与 3500 词 NEA
AQA 7702 的口径和 GCSE 完全不同。AO1 占 26%,要求用语言学术语作出连贯分析;AO2 占 26%,考概念与议题的理解;AO3 占 23%,分析语境与语言特征如何共同产生意义;AO4 占 15%,要求跨文本建立关联;AO5 占 10%,看的是自己写作的专业度与创造力。Paper 1(Language, the Individual and Society)与 Paper 2(Language Diversity and Change)各占 40%,余下 20% 是 NEA「Language in Action」,共 3500 词,其中语言调查约 2000 词、原创写作与评论约 1500 词。AO 在两份卷子和 NEA 里的分布并不平均,Paper 1 里 AO1 占 14%、AO3 占 12%,Paper 2 里 AO2 占 16%,而 AO5 只出现在 Paper 2 与 NEA 中。写作分数因此不再独立存在,它嵌在每一次分析里,落笔时要同时问自己术语是否准确、有没有引证、有没有回到语境。
Assessment at AQA 7702 runs through five objectives instead of a separate writing mark. AO1 carries 26% and rewards accurate linguistic terminology inside a coherent analysis, while AO2 takes another 26% for understanding of concepts and debates. AO3 holds 23% for the link between context and language features, AO4 asks for connections across texts at 15%, and AO5 spends the last 10% on expertise and creativity in your own writing. Those weightings are not spread evenly across the components: Paper 1 leans on AO1 and AO3, Paper 2 carries most of the AO2 weighting, and AO5 appears only in Paper 2 and the non-exam assessment. The two papers are worth 40% each and the 3500-word NEA takes the remaining 20%, divided between a language investigation of about 2000 words and a shorter original piece with commentary. Terminology, evidence and context therefore need checking in every paragraph you write.
Three bottlenecks account for most of the lost time. An argument states its position confidently with no quotation or figure behind it, long sentences stack clause on clause until the subject is buried, and vocabulary varies so much that one concept appears under three or four near-synonyms. Working in reverse order helps: find the one piece of evidence the paragraph needs, split anything past about 35 words, then standardise terminology so each concept keeps a single English label. Planning matters as much in the non-exam assessment, where a 2000-word investigation can consume the whole budget and leave the original writing as an unedited first draft. That component is the best place to rehearse the habits above, since you control both the drafting time and the final wording.
