Cambridge 官方 syllabus 把它们归在 Topic 7 Acids, bases and salts(代码 0620,适用于 2026、2027 与 2028 年考试)。
Acids, bases and salts make up Topic 7 of Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, the syllabus used for examination in 2026, 2027 and 2028; the topic looks small on paper yet it reaches into metals, oxides, salt preparation, solubility rules and qualitative analysis. On Paper 3 and Paper 4, worth 80 marks and 50% each, a question built around this topic usually carries 8 to 12 marks, and it is often stitched together with mole calculations or gas tests. Marks are lost less on the equation itself than on incomplete observation sentences and a missing condition.
Candidates sit either the Core route of Paper 1 and Paper 3 or the Extended route of Paper 2 and Paper 4, and the route sets the ceiling, with Core stopping at grade C while Extended can reach A*. Both multiple-choice papers last 45 minutes for 40 marks and 30% of the grade, and both theory papers last 1 hour 15 minutes for 80 marks and 50%, which leaves under a minute per mark; the practical element is a single paper worth 20%, either the 1 hour 15 minute laboratory test or the 1 hour written Alternative to Practical. In the theory papers an acids question arrives inside a context and carries 4 to 6 marks, so a bare conclusion earns nothing without the observation and the equation behind it.
Three reactions define an acid: with a metal it gives a salt and hydrogen, with a base it gives a salt and water, and with a carbonate it gives a salt, water and carbon dioxide, and only the last one turns limewater milky. Copper does not react with dilute hydrochloric acid at all, while potassium, sodium and calcium react far more violently with water than the syllabus examples of magnesium, zinc and iron. Write the observation as separate pieces of evidence, because a bubble with an unlabelled gas is worth half marks, and a carbonate reaction reported as hydrogen is the commonest loss on this question.
Bases are the oxides or hydroxides of metals, and an alkali is simply a base that dissolves in water, which is why sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and ammonia solution behave so similarly. Bases neutralise acids and also displace ammonia from ammonium salts, a reaction that needs heating before it runs at a useful rate; the gas turns damp red litmus blue, and a glass rod dipped in concentrated hydrochloric acid gives white smoke in its presence. Students lose the mark by naming water vapour instead of ammonia, or by leaving out the heat condition and then writing an observation that does not match their equation.
The syllabus names three indicators only, litmus, thymolphthalein and methyl orange, and every colour change has to be memorised precisely, with thymolphthalein colourless in acid and blue in alkali rather than the phenolphthalein used by other boards. Universal indicator paper compares hydrogen ion concentration on a scale from 0 to 14, where a reading below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral and above 7 is alkaline; indicators show whether a solution is acidic or alkaline, not a numerical pH. In a titration methyl orange is preferred because its two end colours are far apart and the intermediate orange is a usable end point.
Every aqueous acid contains hydrogen ions and every aqueous alkali contains hydroxide ions, and the neutralisation equation H+ + OH- -> H2O is the reason the same four reactions keep appearing on the papers. Sodium and chloride are spectator ions in hydrochloric acid plus sodium hydroxide, so they stay out of the ionic equation although they belong in the full one, and students who write the full equation when the question asks for the ionic version hand back a mark. Concentration changes the rate and the heat released but not the core reaction, and the two mistakes that cost most are H2O2 in place of H2O and an ion written without its charge.
A strong acid is completely dissociated in water, as HCl(aq) -> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) shows, while a weak acid such as ethanoic acid is only partially dissociated, which is why its equation carries a reversible sign. For two solutions of the same concentration the strong acid has the lower pH, conducts better and reacts faster with a metal; acid strength and concentration are different ideas, and a concentrated weak acid can still sit at a higher pH than a dilute strong one. Answers are marked on the extent of dissociation, so quoting dilution to explain a conductivity difference misses the point entirely.
Oxides are first grouped by whether the element joined to oxygen is a metal or a non-metal, then sorted by what they react with; sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide are acidic because they neutralise alkalis, while copper(II) oxide and calcium oxide are basic because they neutralise acids. Calcium oxide reacting with water is strongly exothermic, which is why it appears in self-heating food packs and in soil treatment. The classification that catches students out most often is carbon dioxide, which is acidic because it forms an acid in water, not basic.
An amphoteric oxide reacts with acids and with bases, and the syllabus names only two examples, aluminium oxide and zinc oxide; aluminium oxide gives a salt and water with hydrochloric acid, and a different salt and water with sodium hydroxide, so both directions end in a salt. The same behaviour explains why zinc dissolves in strong alkali as well as in acid, and the pattern is easiest to remember for elements sitting near the metal and non-metal boundary of the Periodic Table. Amphoteric does not mean soluble, since aluminium oxide does not dissolve in water, and Paper 4 usually asks for 2 or 3 marks comparing the two products.
A soluble salt is made by one of four routes and the choice follows from the starting materials: an alkali plus an acid needs a titration, because both are solutions and there is nothing to filter off, so an indicator marks the exact neutral point before evaporation. A metal plus an acid suits reactive metals such as zinc, magnesium or iron, where excess metal is added until fizzing stops and the leftover solid is filtered out. An insoluble base or an insoluble carbonate works the same way without an indicator, and every route ends with evaporation, cooling, crystallisation, filtration and drying; using calcium carbonate in a titration is a common error because the solid never dissolves.
The solubility rules decide which preparation route is even possible, and the exceptions carry the marks: sodium, potassium, ammonium and nitrate salts all dissolve, chlorides dissolve except lead and silver, sulphates dissolve except barium, calcium and lead, carbonates are insoluble apart from the sodium, potassium and ammonium ones, and hydroxides are insoluble apart from those plus partially soluble calcium hydroxide. A precipitation question is answered by naming the new salt and checking it against that list; colour is a separate matter, because most salt solutions are colourless and only copper, iron(II) and iron(III) solutions are coloured. Answers routinely lose a mark for naming a precipitate without its colour.
Insoluble salts are made by precipitation: two soluble solutions are mixed, the new insoluble salt drops out, and the solid is filtered, washed and dried, as in Na2SO4 + BaCl2 -> BaSO4 + 2NaCl, where the white precipitate is also the standard sulfate test. Washing removes soluble salts clinging to the surface of the precipitate, and that single sentence is what the question is after when it asks why the solid is washed. Water of crystallisation is bound in fixed proportion, as in CuSO4·5H2O, where heating the blue crystals gives white anhydrous copper(II) sulphate and adding water restores the blue, a pair of observations commonly used to test for water.
Papers 5 and 6 carry 40 marks and 20% each and test practical skills only, and acidic and alkaline solutions appear almost every year through titration, salt preparation and pH comparison. In a titration the burette is read to two decimal places with the eye level with the bottom of the meniscus, and two readings count as concordant when they differ by no more than 0.05 cm3; tables take units in the heading rather than after every number, and graphs are drawn with pencil and ruler with anomalous points marked but left out of the line of best fit. Error analysis earns nothing unless it names a specific cause such as parallax when reading the burette, and mixing up the independent and dependent variables is the single most common loss on these papers.
