Radioactivity is Topic 6 of Edexcel GCSE Physics and one of the easiest places to drop mid-range marks in Paper 1; the chapter looks like a list of stopping materials, yet the marks actually turn on half-life readings, balanced nuclear equations and a clear account of randomness. Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 100 marks and counts for 50% of the qualification across Topics 1 to 7. Missing units, unbalanced atomic numbers and swapped contamination and irradiation answers are the three losses that turn up most often here.
一、Topic 6 在 Paper 1 的分值与考纲编号 / Where Topic 6 Sits in Paper 1
Topic 6 lives in Paper 1, coded 1PH0/1F and 1PH0/1H, a 1 hour 45 minute paper worth 100 marks and 50% of the qualification across Topics 1 to 7; the specification splits the content into 6.10 to 6.22 on emission and nuclear equations, 6.23 to 6.35P on activity, half-life, hazards and applications, and 6.36P to 6.46P on fission and fusion, with the P points reserved for the separate physics award. Assessment objectives run at 40% knowledge, 40% application and 20% analysis, so a half-life question usually collects two of the three, and teaching began in September 2016 with first assessment in 2018. Eight core practicals sit inside the course and practical skills carry at least 15% of the marks, which is 30 out of 200.
Atomic Structure, Mass Number and Isotopes
An atom is a small positive nucleus surrounded by electrons, with protons at +1 and relative mass 1, neutrons at 0 and 1, and electrons at -1 with a relative mass of roughly 0.0005; the nuclear radius is about 10^-14 m against an atomic radius of about 10^-10 m, so almost all of the atom is empty space. Mass number counts protons plus neutrons while atomic number counts protons alone, which is why isotopes share a chemical identity but differ sharply in nuclear stability. Many students assume the radiation leaves the electron cloud, yet alpha and beta particles both come out of the nucleus.
三、alpha beta gamma 的穿透与电离对比 / Penetration against Ionisation
An alpha particle is a helium nucleus of two protons and two neutrons that stops in a few centimetres of air or a sheet of paper; a beta particle is a fast electron from the nucleus that needs a few millimetres of aluminium, while gamma radiation is electromagnetic and is only reduced, never fully stopped, by thick lead or concrete. Ionising power runs the other way, with alpha transferring its energy hardest over the shortest distance. Neutrons carry no charge, ionise very little directly and still out-penetrate gamma, which is why hydrogen-rich shielding is used.
Balancing Nuclear Equations
Every nuclear equation has to balance both mass number and charge, which is why alpha emission drops the mass number by 4 and the atomic number by 2 as polonium-210 becomes lead-206. Beta minus decay converts a neutron into a proton and releases an electron, leaving the mass number unchanged and raising the atomic number by 1, so carbon-14 turns into nitrogen-14. Beta plus decay runs the mirror image for physics-only content, and a gamma emission changes neither number because it only carries away surplus energy.
Random Decay, Count Rate and Background
Radioactive decay is a random process, so nobody can predict when one particular nucleus will decay and only very large numbers of nuclei follow a predictable pattern; a Geiger-Muller tube reports a count rate in counts per second, which is a different quantity from activity in becquerels. Background has to be measured first and subtracted, so a source giving 520 counts/s against 20 counts/s of background is contributing 500 counts/s. Repeated readings and a greater distance from the tube reduce the chance of one particle being counted twice, and the jitter between readings is randomness rather than a fault.
Half-Life: Definition and Calculation
Half-life is the time for half the undecayed nuclei to decay, or equally the time for the activity to halve, and Edexcel accepts either wording; one half-life leaves a half, two leave a quarter, three an eighth and four 6.25%. A sample falling from 880 Bq to 220 Bq has passed through two half-lives, so each one lasts six months. Reading the graph means drawing a line across from half the starting activity to the curve and dropping a vertical to the time axis, which beats counting grid squares.
Matching Half-Life to Applications
Half-life decides what an isotope is good for, so americium-241 in a smoke alarm emits alpha particles and lasts hundreds of years, staying safe indoors while its ionisation keeps a small current flowing that smoke interrupts. Beta emitters suit thickness gauges for paper and foil because the change in transmitted intensity is easy to measure, and technetium-99m with a six-hour half-life fits medical tracers that must decay quickly. Carbon-14 at roughly 5730 years matches the timescale of archaeological samples, which is exactly what carbon dating depends on.
Natural and Artificial Background Radiation
总计数率 500 counts/s 配 20 counts/s 本底,源本身是 480 counts/s。
Background radiation arrives from natural sources such as cosmic rays, radon and potassium-40 in rock, and carbon-14 inside living tissue, plus artificial sources including fallout from weapons testing and accidents and medical exposure from X-rays and radiotherapy. The first step in any counting experiment is to record background for the same length of time as the source reading, often 60 seconds. Subtracting it is not optional housekeeping, since a total of 500 counts/s against 20 counts/s of background leaves 480 counts/s from the source.
Contamination versus Irradiation
Contamination means radioactive material has landed on a surface or entered the body, whereas irradiation means being exposed to radiation without becoming radioactive yourself, and swapping the two terms is a reliable way to lose marks. Contamination is harder to manage because the material travels on air, water, clothing and hands and then irradiates from inside, with alpha emitters doing the most damage once inhaled. Washing and sealing deal with contamination, while distance, time and shielding deal with irradiation.
Time, Distance and Shielding
Dose control comes down to time, distance and shielding together, because a shorter stay means less accumulated dose, and since a point source weakens with the square of distance, doubling the distance cuts the dose to a quarter. Material choice matters as well, since alpha stops in paper, beta needs a few millimetres of aluminium or perspex, and gamma requires thick lead or concrete. In the laboratory the source points down or at a wall, nobody leans over the container, and it goes back into its lead pot straight after the reading.
Fission against Fusion
Fission happens when a large unstable nucleus absorbs a slow neutron and splits into two smaller nuclei, releasing two or three neutrons that can trigger further fissions in a chain reaction; the energy comes from the mass difference and appears as heat and light. Reactors tame the chain with control rods that absorb neutrons, a moderator that slows them down and shielding around the core, while a weapon is simply an uncontrolled version. Fusion joins two light nuclei and needs extreme temperature and pressure, which is why it works inside stars and stays hard to control on Earth.
Mark-Scheme Traps and Graph Reading
Graph technique for half-life rewards three steps: halve the starting value, run a horizontal line to the curve, then drop a vertical to the time axis, allowing half a grid square of tolerance. Units carry marks, so activity belongs in becquerels while a measured count rate belongs in counts per second, and an equation counts as balanced only when both mass numbers and atomic numbers match. Longer answers score by point, which means naming the half-life, the radiation type and the detection method rather than writing one long sentence.
