Motion and forces is the opening topic of the Edexcel GCSE Physics course, and it supplies the calculation language that every later topic reuses; scalars, vectors, units and graphs come back in energy, waves and astronomy questions. Both papers are 1 hour 45 minutes long and worth 100 marks each, with Paper 1 covering Topics 1 to 7 and Paper 2 covering Topics 8 to 15 while still leaning on motion reasoning. Many students treat the chapter as six formulas to memorise, then drop marks on the areas under velocity-time graphs.
一、Topic 1 在卷面上的位置 / Where Topic 1 Sits in the Papers
Topic 1 questions usually arrive as two or three separate items worth anything from one mark to six; the mark scheme rewards the formula, the substitution with units, and the final answer at the required number of significant figures. Specification 1PH0 came into teaching in September 2016 with first assessment in 2018, and the Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5 while the Higher tier covers 4 to 9. Writing the answer alone, however accurate, throws away the first mark of every calculation.
Scalars, Vectors and Units
Scalars carry magnitude only while vectors carry magnitude and direction, which is why distance and speed sit in a different group from displacement and velocity; forces and accelerations are vectors too. The conversion that trips people up is speed, since 1 m/s equals 3.6 km/h, so 20 m/s is 72 km/h rather than 5.6 km/h. Units belong on every answer, and an acceleration written as m/s instead of m/s squared scores nothing.
Average and Instantaneous Speed
Average speed is total distance divided by total time, whereas instantaneous speed needs a very short distance paired with a very short time interval; speed is the magnitude and velocity adds direction, so 5 m/s to the right and 5 m/s to the left share a speed but not a velocity. A classic item is a return journey with 30 km covered in 30 minutes and another 30 km taking 45 minutes, where the answer is 48 km/h rather than the 50 km/h you get by averaging the two speeds. Light gates or frame-by-frame video timing give the instantaneous value, and the shorter the measured distance, the closer the reading comes.
Gradients on Distance-Time Graphs
On a distance-time graph the gradient of the line is the speed, a flat section means the object is stationary and a downward slope means it is heading back towards the start; curvature shows acceleration or deceleration. Gradients should be taken between two points as far apart as possible, because reading adjacent points turns a small plotting error into a large speed error. Graph questions are marked on axis labels with units, plotted points and straight joining lines, so a correct number with an unlabelled axis still loses marks.
Slope and Area on Velocity-Time Graphs
The gradient of a velocity-time graph is acceleration and the area beneath it is displacement, a pair of rules that answers most graph questions in this topic; a flat line means steady velocity with zero acceleration. Areas split into rectangles and triangles, or into a trapezium using half the sum of the parallel sides multiplied by the height, and negative velocity means motion in the opposite direction rather than deceleration. Reading the scale matters, since a grid square of 2 m/s by 1 s stands for 2 m of displacement, not 1 m.
Choosing the Uniform Acceleration Equations
匀加速常用的三个式子是 v = u + at、s = ut + 0.5at^2、v^2 = u^2 + 2as。
For constant acceleration the working equations are v equals u plus at, s equals ut plus half at squared, and v squared equals u squared plus 2as; the choice depends on which quantity is missing. Braking questions almost always use the third form, because after the reaction time you know the initial speed, the deceleration and the distance. Speeds must be converted to metres per second first, and a negative acceleration simply means the direction opposes the initial motion.
Newton's First Law and Inertial Mass
Newton's first law keeps an object at rest or moving in a straight line at constant speed when the resultant force is zero, and the resultant force is what the law is really about; balanced forces are not the same as no forces. Inertial mass measures how hard it is to change an object's motion, and it is a different quantity from weight. The usual scenarios are a car cruising at a steady speed, a skydiver falling at terminal velocity and a curling stone sliding across level ice, and in each case the forces cancel.
八、F = ma 与小车核心实验 / F = ma and the Trolley Core Practical
Newton's second law is written as force equals mass times acceleration, with newtons, kilograms and metres per second squared as the matching units; the core practical uses a trolley with added masses plus light gates or a data logger. Only one variable should change at a time, because altering the mass and the force together leaves the results impossible to interpret. A frequent mistake is forgetting the mass of the trolley itself, which makes the calculated acceleration too large, so check that the plotted line passes through the origin.
Weight, Mass and Free Fall
Weight is the force of gravity acting on a mass, given by W equals mg with g taken as 9.8 N/kg at GCSE, so a 60 kg student weighs 588 N; mass stays the same everywhere while weight changes with g. In free fall without air resistance every object accelerates at 9.8 m/s squared regardless of its mass, which is why a feather and a steel ball land together in a vacuum tube. That single fact carries the explanation mark, so quote it rather than restating the experiment.
Terminal Velocity and Air Resistance
Air resistance grows with speed until it balances weight, the resultant force becomes zero and the object settles at terminal velocity; a skydiver accelerates first, then flows into a steady fall. The parachute opening raises drag sharply, so the resultant force points upwards, the person slows down and then falls again at a new and much lower steady speed. Plotted on a velocity-time graph this appears as a curve that flattens, a sudden drop and a horizontal line, and answers that never say the drag equals the weight pick up one mark out of two.
Newton's Third Law and Momentum
Newton's third law pairs equal and opposite forces that act on different objects, which is why they never cancel each other; momentum is mass times velocity in kg m/s and the total is conserved in a collision. Crumple zones, seat belts and airbags stretch the impact time, and since force is the change in momentum divided by the time taken, a longer contact time means a smaller force. A 0.15 kg ball arriving at 20 m/s and rebounding at 15 m/s changes momentum by 5.25 kg m/s, giving an average force of 105 N over 0.05 s.
Stopping Distance and a Three-Week Plan
Stopping distance is thinking distance plus braking distance, where thinking distance depends on reaction time and speed while braking distance depends on speed, mass, road surface and the condition of the tyres and brakes; the Highway Code gives typical totals of about 23 m at 30 mph and 73 m at 60 mph. Because braking distance scales with the square of the speed, doubling the speed more than doubles the total distance. A three-week plan works well: refresh the equations and units, drill graph and explanation questions, then sit a timed Paper 1 and rewrite only the questions you missed.
