Edexcel GCSE
Pearson Edexcel's GCSE English Language is specification 1EN0, an untiered qualification made up of two written papers plus a separately reported Spoken Language Endorsement and graded on the 9 to 1 scale. Paper 2 is titled Non-fiction and Transactional Writing, coded 1EN0/02, and it carries 96 marks and 60 per cent of the GCSE, which makes it worth more than Paper 1 on 40 per cent; Section A is the reading section on 56 marks, while Section B, the subject of this article, is a writing task on 40 marks chosen from two options with about 45 minutes recommended for it. Of those 40 marks, 24 are awarded for content and organisation and 16 for spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary, each half marked against its own grid. Treating Section B as free writing and handing in the first version is why so many scripts leave half of the technical marks unclaimed, so the sections below work through form, structure, argument and proofreading in that order.
The task format does not change: a situation and two bullet points are printed, you choose one of the two tasks, usually numbered 8 or 9, and you produce a single piece. The 40 marks split into 24 for AO5, which rewards a tone, style and register that suit the stated form and reader along with clear links between paragraphs, and 16 for AO6, which looks only at spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. Pearson's own 2024 notice confirms that the 1EN0 mark schemes were amended slightly from the May-June 2024 series, and the AO6 grid still runs across five levels for a maximum of 16 marks, so those marks are awarded by level rather than as an overall impression; scripts that rush the full stops, capital letters and paragraph breaks lose technical marks they could have kept, and the form plus the reader named in the question set the sentence length and tone of everything that follows.
Forms rotate between series, and the official list is short: a letter, a speech, an article, a review, or a section of a guide, textbook, leaflet or booklet, always with the reader named in the task. A letter has to handle salutation and sign-off, and the register of a letter to a head teacher is nothing like a note to a friend, so contractions and slang have no place in the former; a speech opens by addressing the audience directly and holds attention through second person, which works best in short sentences because the pauses for breath mark where the paragraphs fall. A review must reach an evaluative judgement supported by specific detail, such as how one part of a performance was staged, since a piece that only records personal feelings loses its marks; a guide or leaflet section runs on subheadings and imperatives with steps a reader can follow in order, and writing every form as the same argumentative essay hides both the form and the reader from the marker.
The two bullet points are not suggestions but the places where content marks sit, so a workable shape is five to seven paragraphs: an opening that names the reason for writing or speaking, two paragraphs for each bullet, and a closing that returns to a specific request or appeal instead of restating the opening. Each topic sentence should announce what its paragraph does, which lets the marker see the line of argument at a glance, while the inside of a paragraph carries one reason with one concrete example rather than three sentences saying the same thing. Examples are safest when they can be checked, such as a named person, place or date, and figures quoted without a source are better left out; copying the bullets down the left of the page during planning and noting the example for each paragraph on the right fixes the order of the piece and removes the mid-answer pause that costs both time and coherence.
Those 16 marks cover spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary only, and the differences a marker can see are fairly specific. Punctuation needs range: a colon to introduce an explanation, a semicolon to join two closely related main clauses, and no missing full stops; sentence length should vary so that a short sentence after a long one creates emphasis, while vocabulary is judged on accuracy rather than rarity and repeating the same verb three times inside one paragraph is visible to anyone reading quickly. Spelling errors cluster around a small set of words such as necessary, separate, definitely and environment, which are worth scanning for once the piece is finished, because paragraphing and punctuation are the fastest things to improve through practice.
Judgement in non-fiction shows up inside a paragraph: state the claim, support it with a reason, then land it with one concrete example drawn from experience, something you have observed or a hypothetical case, none of which needs to be statistical. Conceding a point before answering it is the strongest move available, because it shows the argument has weighed the other side; direct address, rhetorical questions and triples work when used two or three times in a whole piece and always in the service of a point, whereas stacking them reads as performance. Adjectives are the fastest way to blur a judgement, since a consistent tone and coherent progression are what the grid actually rewards, and closing on a specific request or recommendation reads as purposeful while a vague exclamation at the end wastes the final impression the marker takes away.
The timing recommended for Section B is ten minutes planning, thirty minutes writing and five minutes checking, and it pays to fix the order of that final five minutes. Confirm the form and the reader first, checking that a letter has a salutation and that a speech opens by addressing the audience, then check that each bullet has a paragraph answering it. Sweep the piece for capital letters, missing full stops and the pronoun I written in lower case, and check that the tense does not drift in the middle of a narrative about the past, since changes should be limited to what is actually wrong and run-on sentences with no punctuation between them are far more visible to a marker than a thin argument.
Section B needs no extra materials: Pearson publishes the 1EN0 past papers, inserts and mark schemes free on qualifications.pearson.com, and papers going back to 2017 are available there. The routine is fixed as well: take one task, write it in 45 minutes, then grade your own script against the AO5 and AO6 grids, and rewrite the two bullet paragraphs afterwards. Writing the same content as a letter, a speech, a review and a guide section shows exactly where the register has to change, and rewriting teaches more than a fresh piece because the sentences that cannot survive a change of form become visible; five pieces a week without that comparison leave the mark where it started.
