Atomic structure opens Unit 1 of WJEC GCSE Chemistry and every later topic draws on it, from bonding through quantitative work to rates of reaction. The marks never arrive as one large question; they are scattered across the two written papers as multiple choice, short answers and explanations. What follows keeps the specification's own order: counting particles, isotopes and relative atomic mass, electron shells, the layout of the periodic table, how ions form, and the line spectra that pushed the model along. WJEC has taught this specification since September 2016 with first awards in summer 2018, and the updated version on the WJEC website adds a new Unit 3 for teaching from September 2026 with first award in 2028, leaving the atomic structure content of Units 1 and 2 untouched.
An atom consists of a nucleus and electrons, and the nucleus contains only protons and neutrons; the proton carries one unit of positive charge, the neutron none, and each electron carries an equal and opposite charge at about one 1836th of the proton mass, which is why nearly all the mass sits in the nucleus. The proton count is the atomic number and it fixes both the element and its place in the periodic table, while the mass number adds protons and neutrons as a whole number after the symbol, as in Na-23. A neutral atom holds as many electrons as protons, and any mismatch makes the particle an ion; many students read the mass number as the relative atomic mass, yet the latter is an average weighted by natural abundance and often carries decimals, which is exactly how sodium reaches 22.99 although every sodium atom has a mass number of 23. Questions that give a symbol and ask for particle counts are marked strictly, and the usual error subtracts electron number from mass number instead of subtracting protons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with identical proton counts but different numbers of neutrons, so they behave almost identically in chemical reactions while differing in mass; carbon is roughly 98.9 per cent carbon-12 and 1.1 per cent carbon-13 with carbon-14 present only in traces, and the three hydrogen isotopes show the mass gap most clearly, since deuterium carries one extra neutron and that is why heavy water weighs more than ordinary water. Calculating a relative atomic mass means weighting each isotope by abundance, and chlorine shows how, with chlorine-35 at about 75 per cent and chlorine-37 at about 25 per cent giving 35 multiplied by 0.75 plus 37 multiplied by 0.25, or 35.5. WJEC prints the abundance table or the mass spectrum inside the question, so nothing needs memorising, and the commonest error averages the two masses straight to 36, which ignores abundance altogether; treating the value as a whole number then distorts significant figures later in a mole calculation.
Electrons sit in shells around the nucleus, with the first shell holding up to 2 electrons and the second up to 8, and at GCSE the third is treated as taking 8 before any electron moves to a fourth; sodium is written 2,8,1, potassium 2,8,8,1 and calcium 2,8,8,2. The outer shell decides the group and the chemistry, because sodium and potassium with one outer electron lose it readily while chlorine and bromine with seven gain one, and the number of occupied shells equals the period, so sodium lies in period 3 and potassium in period 4. WJEC expects dot and cross diagrams showing transfer or sharing of outer electrons and the ability to read an element back out of a configuration, and candidates who import the A-Level rule that 4s fills before 3d are overreaching, since shell order is the GCSE convention. Miscounting the outer shell is the other frequent slip, reading 8 rather than 1 from 2,8,8,1.
The periodic table orders elements by increasing atomic number, with periods running across and groups running down; Mendeleev arranged the known elements by relative atomic mass in 1869 and left gaps to predict undiscovered ones, and the X-ray measurements of the early twentieth century replaced mass with atomic number so that no pair sits out of order today. Elements in one group share the same outer shell count and therefore behave alike, since group 1 alkali metals form 1+ ions, group 7 halogens sit one electron short of a full shell, and group 0 noble gases react hardly at all. A stepped line separates metals from non-metals, and elements close to it carry both characters; reading a group as the period is the commonest mix-up, because groups follow columns and outer electrons while periods follow rows and occupied shells. Questions that hand over an unfamiliar element and ask how it behaves towards water or oxygen are answered from its group and outer electrons alone.
Metal atoms lose their outer electrons to become positive ions and non-metal atoms gain electrons to become negative ions, and in both cases the outcome matches the electron arrangement of the nearest noble gas. Sodium loses one electron to give Na+ and moves from 2,8,1 to 2,8, the configuration of neon, while chlorine gains one electron to give Cl- and moves from 2,8,7 to 2,8,8, the configuration of argon. Ionic compounds stack these ions into a lattice held by electrostatic attraction, which explains the high melting point of sodium chloride and why the solid does not conduct while the molten form does, since only then are the ions free to move. Charge goes at the top right of the symbol and each ion needs its own brackets and charge in a dot and cross diagram, a step WJEC marks separately; reversing the direction of electron transfer, or omitting the charge, loses those marks, and calling NaCl a molecule misreads a lattice that contains no discrete NaCl units.
Each revision of the atomic model came from an experiment, starting with Dalton's indivisible solid sphere in the early nineteenth century, moving through Thomson's positive sphere with electrons embedded after the 1897 discovery of the electron, then Rutherford's nuclear model of 1911, once most alpha particles passed straight through gold foil while a few bounced back, and finally Bohr's fixed energy levels of 1913, introduced to explain the line spectrum of hydrogen. Light leaves an excited atom only at particular wavelengths as electrons drop to lower levels, with sodium's yellow line near 589 nanometres, and a line rather than continuous spectrum is the direct evidence that energies are quantised; a full-mark answer ties each wavelength to the energy gap between two fixed levels. Confusing line spectra with continuous ones, or claiming that energy is released without saying it is quantised, is where the marks go.
Every WJEC paper prints a periodic table with relative atomic masses, so read whether the question supplies a proton count or a mass number before deciding to look one up. Calculations are marked in three steps, formula, substitution and answer, with units carried through the numbers, and mass number answers stay whole while relative atomic masses may keep one decimal place. Dot and cross diagrams repay a fixed pencil routine: draw the shells, use different symbols for transferred and shared electrons, add charges and brackets, then check that the outer electrons balance. Explanation questions carry two or three marks, so cause and effect must both appear, and saying that potassium is more reactive than sodium without adding that its outer electron sits further from the nucleus earns nothing. Working down the Unit 1 content list in the specification and pairing each keyword with one example gives a revision sheet that beats rereading the textbook, and the recent papers and mark schemes are free on the WJEC website, where two papers checked line by line against the scheme teach more than ten done in a hurry.
