Writing a personal statement for an engineering degree is the hardest part of the application to revise, because it must carry academic content and still read as one argument. From 2026 entry, UCAS replaced the single 4,000-character essay with three structured questions, each requiring at least 350 characters and all three sharing the same 4,000-character cap that includes spaces and punctuation. The old habit of opening with enthusiasm and saving activities for the end no longer maps onto the form, since each piece of evidence has to sit under the question it answers. Admissions staff read the three answers one after another, so repetition between them costs you characters and credibility.
The three questions ask why you want to study the subject, how your qualifications and studies have prepared you for it, and what else you have done outside education and why those experiences matter. For engineering, the weight sits on the second question, because that is where the mathematics and physics behind the claim have to appear, and motivation with no subject content reads as enthusiasm only. There is no official split of the 4,000 characters, yet each answer needs a shape of its own, with the evidence and the reflection finished inside it; a sentence completed in the next box breaks the reader's thread. In practice, applicants who spend half the budget on the opening question leave themselves almost no room for experiments and projects, so a quarter for motivation and method with the rest split between academic and hands-on evidence is a workable starting point. UCAS publishes its originality rules on the official site, and text judged to be written by someone else puts the risk on the applicant.
Away from the cliche of loving machines since childhood, the question needs a scene: what failed, what you did about it, what came out of it, and what you now want to understand. Taking apart an old phone or fixing a bicycle both work, provided you can explain the steps you took and the basis for your diagnosis. Family background works as a reason only if you can show how it shaped a specific decision. The usual mistake is turning the process into a list of actions, which reads like a manual and hides your reasoning, so compress observation, hypothesis and test into two or three sentences and land on the idea you could not explain at the time. If you joined a robotics club or an engineering competition, say which module you owned and which version failed before you fixed it, because a verifiable detail carries more weight than the name of an award.
For the second question, evidence belongs inside named topics rather than at subject level. In A-Level Mathematics, where Edexcel, AQA and OCR all publish their specifications online, vectors, complex numbers, calculus and moments connect directly to engineering problems, while circuit analysis, material properties and conservation of energy do the same job from physics. Writing that you have studied calculus proves little on its own; the useful sentence explains a decision you made with a derivative, such as finding the dimensions that maximise a container's volume or estimating the uncertainty in a measurement through error propagation. A-Level mechanics stops at statics and kinematics, so reading the first-year material on stress, strain and fluid flow before you write gives you something more distinctive to say. A spanner makes the point concrete: lengthening the lever arm from 0.2 m to 0.35 m cuts the force needed for the same moment from 50 N to roughly 29 N, and that calculation is moments and vectors doing real work. Any topic you name is fair game for an interview question that expects three minutes of explanation.
Project entries go vague because the applicant never separates their own work from the team's, and a reader cannot inspect the object you built. Say which module you owned, which materials and dimensions you chose, and how far the result sat from your prediction: on a wind-powered trolley, whether you built the blades or the transmission, the blade length and pitch angle, the three test-run speeds, and which parameter you changed for the fourth run. A short build log with photographs, measurements and a parts list gives the reader something to check when the device itself cannot be shown. Numbers are the only evidence available to someone who will never see the device, so a description without them reads as interest rather than achievement. Error analysis separates strong engineering statements from average ones, because explaining what you measured, where the uncertainty came from and how you reduced it says more than a list of software packages; a project that failed is still worth a paragraph, as long as the paragraph is about the method you changed.
The third question is about what you did outside the classroom and why it counts as preparation, which tests reflection rather than volume. Pick one book chapter and explain what it changed in your thinking instead of naming six titles; on engineering, materials, structures and manufacturing all offer a way in, and the useful paragraph ends with a question you still have, such as whether the loading assumed by the author survives contact with a real site. Online courses work the same way, and a course code with the project you submitted says more than the name of a platform. One well-argued sentence about a chapter beats a bibliography of six titles, and a reader notices the difference at once. Factory visits and lectures fail most often because the applicant records an impression and cannot say what was learned, so compress each experience into a single sentence of the form: I used to think X, and now I think Y.
Language is where the remaining marks leak away. Adjective stacking is the most common fault, since words like passionate, rigorous and hard-working carry no information in an engineering statement and deleting them leaves you more room for evidence. In project paragraphs, replace we with I and be specific about which option you argued for and why, because a reader cannot tell what you decided from what the team did. Repeating one episode across three answers makes the application look thin, so if the broken device already appeared under motivation, use the physics it exposed in the second answer instead of describing it again. UCAS sets out its originality rules on the official site, and polishing your own sentences with AI is a different act from having your experiences written for you.
