AQA 的 GCSE Business(specification 8132)把营销放在第 3.5 节,考试时统一归入 Paper 2「Influences of marketing and finance on business activity」,这张卷子占整门课的 50%。
AQA's GCSE Business specification (8132) places marketing in section 3.5, and in the exam it is assessed inside Paper 2, "Influences of marketing and finance on business activity", which carries 50% of the qualification. Marketing therefore accounts for roughly a quarter of the marks on the course. This article works through the parts of 3.5 that appear most often: segmentation, market research, the design mix and product life cycle, pricing, promotion and distribution, plus a framework for the nine-mark question. Terms are given in British English so they can be lifted straight onto an answer sheet.
Market segmentation and understanding customers
Segmentation splits a broad market into smaller groups whose members want similar things; demographic bases such as age and gender, location, income and lifestyle each produce a different set of customers. Before targeting a segment a business checks four things: whether it is big enough, whether it is growing, whether it can be reached with the promotion tools available, and whether the resources exist to serve it at a cost that works. A gym equipment retailer selling cheap dumbbells and skipping ropes to students while pushing home treadmills and folding rowing machines at office workers is simply acting on that analysis. Many students stop at "young people" and never say what follows from it, which is where the marks sit. Write the characteristics of the group and the change they force on product features, price level or channel choice.
Market research: primary versus secondary data
Market research answers two questions: what customers want, and whether the decisions already taken are working. Primary research is collected first-hand through questionnaires, interviews, focus groups and observation, while secondary research draws on material that already exists, including government statistics, industry reports, competitor websites and published case studies. Primary data is focused and current but expensive, and a weak sample design makes the findings unreliable; secondary data is cheap and quick but may be dated, or collected for a purpose that does not match the question being asked; government statistics are consistent but slow to update, and industry reports often carry a commercial slant, so cross-checking two or three sources is worth the time. The sampling method decides how far the findings travel: random sampling gives the best representation and is the hardest to run, while quota sampling is easier but carries the researcher's own bias. A questionnaire that leads the respondent, for example by asking whether they agree a product is excellent, produces answers that cannot be trusted, and a large sample drawn from one year group still says nothing about the whole school.
Product: the design mix and the product life cycle
Product questions work at three levels. The design mix asks students to judge a product on function, aesthetics and economic manufacture: whether it solves the customer's problem, whether it is noticed on a shelf or in a feed, and whether it can be made and sold at a cost the business can live with; the product life cycle then runs from development through introduction, growth, maturity and decline, and while maturity usually carries the highest profit it also brings the strongest competition. A portfolio spreads risk across products at different stages, so the cash generated by a mature line funds the next launch. Differentiation and a unique selling point are the keywords examiners look for, but they only score when attached to something concrete, such as a quiet motor that lets a treadmill be used in a flat; simply promising more advertising is a weak answer on extending the life cycle, and changing the function, the packaging, the target segment or the export market scores better.
Price: choosing between five pricing strategies
Price is the quickest element of the mix to change and the one that hits profit and demand most directly. Skimming starts high for products with a patent or a genuine novelty, then cuts the price once the keenest buyers have bought; penetration pricing buys market share with a low launch price and accepts thin margins, though consumers who get used to the low price may leave when it rises. Competitive pricing follows the market rate where products are hard to tell apart, and cost-plus pricing adds a fixed mark-up to unit cost, which is easy to calculate but ignores what customers will actually pay. Promotional pricing clears stock in the short term, though heavy use trains customers to wait for a discount. Price elasticity of demand explains the puzzle: cutting the price raises total revenue when demand is elastic and lowers it when demand is inelastic. A numerical check makes the idea concrete: 1,000 units at 20 yuan give 20,000 yuan of revenue, a cut to 18 yuan with sales rising to 1,300 units gives 23,400 yuan, and a rise to only 1,050 units gives 18,900 yuan.
Promotion and place: reaching the customer
Promotion answers the question of how customers hear about a product; place answers where they can buy it. The mix of advertising, sales promotion, public relations, sponsorship, direct marketing and personal selling depends on where the target customers spend their attention and on the budget available, so a product aimed at fifteen-year-olds usually does better on short-video platforms than in a local newspaper. The test of promotion is whether it changes buying behaviour rather than how many people saw the message, and on place, physical retail offers immediate collection and the chance to try the product but carries rent and staff costs, while online selling reaches further with less stock pressure but brings delivery, returns and customer service work. Multi-channel businesses show the product online and let customers handle it in store, and they have to stop their own channels undercutting each other; shelf position in a supermarket or the opening hours of a convenience store often decides sales in case study questions, so tie the answer to the conditions given in the case.
案例与答题:用 4P 组合回答 9 分题 / Case study technique: using the 4Ps in a nine-mark answer
In Paper 2, marketing questions often ask students to evaluate a decision, and the mark scheme rewards the quality of the argument rather than the verdict reached. A reliable structure is to state the target customer and the competitive situation from the case, link the two or three elements of the 4Ps that the decision touches, set out the arguments on both sides, and finish with a judgement that carries a condition, for example that a price cut raises market share when demand is elastic and spare capacity exists but damages long-term profit if customers read a low price as low quality. Numbers from the case carry more weight than general description, and calculation questions on market share, gross profit or revenue after a price change need the working shown, with units and percentages kept in place; answers that jump straight to a conclusion without weighing anything up tend to sit in the middle band. Twelve to fourteen minutes is a fair budget for nine marks, with the first minute spent underlining the figures and key phrases in the case.
