AQA GCSE
Many students treat AQA GCSE Maths revision as a pure volume game, but the paper structure itself carries examinable intelligence. The division of labour between the three papers has barely changed in a decade: which paper forbids a calculator, which one carries the heaviest arithmetic load, and which one is most likely to hide a multi-step word problem. Candidates who understand this can convert the same knowledge into a higher grade simply by allocating time better and by abandoning the right questions at the right moment.
三份试卷的题型配比不同, 但覆盖的知识领域完全一致: Number(数与运算)、Algebra(代数)、Ratio, proportion and rates of change(比与比例)、Geometry and measures(几何与测量)、Probability(概率)、Statistics(统计)。
You sit three papers, each worth 80 marks and each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, giving a total of 240 marks. Paper 1 is the non-calculator paper; Papers 2 and 3 both permit a calculator. The balance of question types differs between papers, but the content domains are identical across all three: number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability, and statistics. Foundation and Higher tiers share the same structure and differ only in difficulty and grade boundaries. The three sittings fall in May and June of Year 11, usually with only a few days between them, so a revision plan that depends on cramming between papers will not survive contact with the timetable.
Paper 1 is not harder so much as slower. Without a calculator, operations such as 2.5 x 3.6, fraction simplification and percentage conversion all have to be done by hand, so the examiners deliberately keep irrational numbers simple and shift the difficulty into reasoning. Three failure patterns dominate this paper: mixing fractions and decimals without converting first, mis-scaling unit conversions (1 m2 equals 10000 cm2, not 100), and leaving answers such as 6/8 when the question demands a fraction in lowest terms. A sound strategy is to scan the whole paper first, flag the heavy-reasoning items (usually the 4-mark or higher show that and prove questions), bank all the 1 to 3 mark questions, then return to the long ones with the remaining time.
Papers 2 and 3 look alike in structure but differ in emphasis. Paper 2 tends to lean on numerical work with functions: finding a side with trigonometry, modelling exponential growth, or using iteration to approximate a root. Paper 3 leans towards integrated applications and open contexts, such as linear programming for resource allocation or using statistical diagrams to justify a conclusion. Having a calculator does not excuse missing working. The mark scheme for calculator papers explicitly rewards the formula written down and the values substituted; an unsupported answer usually earns only the accuracy mark and loses the method mark. Your calculator must also be in the correct degree or radian mode, and models with symbolic manipulation or graphing capability are not permitted and will be confiscated on the day.
在评估目标(Assessment Objectives)层面, AO1(熟练运用方法)约占 50%, AO2(推理、解释与交流)约占 25%, AO3(在真实情境中解决问题)约占 25%。
Across past papers the topic weighting is remarkably stable. Number accounts for roughly 25 to 30 percent of the marks, algebra for 20 to 25 percent, ratio and proportion for 15 to 20 percent, geometry and measures around 20 percent, and probability plus statistics together about 15 percent. At the assessment objective level, AO1 (fluent use of methods) carries about 50 percent, AO2 (reasoning, interpreting and communicating) about 25 percent, and AO3 (solving problems in real contexts) about 25 percent. The practical implication is clear: if your AO1 foundations still leak marks, patching them gives the fastest return, while the AO3 context questions, typically worth 5 or 6 marks each, are where grades are actually separated once you can decode the scenario.
The AQA mark scheme splits each question into method marks, accuracy marks and independent marks, with occasional communication marks. The guiding principle is traceability: if the formula is written correctly and the values are substituted correctly, the method mark survives even when the arithmetic at the end goes wrong. Write each step on its own line rather than collapsing several operations into one, because an examiner can only award what is visible. For show that and prove that questions a complete chain of reasoning is compulsory; for explain questions you must cite the specific mathematical property, for example alternate angles being equal or the denominator being non-zero, since obviously or clearly earns nothing. Units and accuracy are marked too, so an answer of 3.142 against a demand for three significant figures loses the accuracy mark.
Both tiers share the same paper structure and differ in three places: the difficulty gradient, access to the formula sheet, and the range of grades available. Foundation caps at grade 5 while Higher spans grades 4 to 9. A common misconception is that Higher is easier to pass because its boundaries look lower; in reality the difficulty climbs faster, so weak arithmetic costs you both the easy marks and the hard ones. The sensible criterion is stability rather than peak performance. If repeated mocks sit comfortably above grade 5 with clear working, Higher offers more headroom; if results oscillate between grades 3 and 4 with errors concentrated in basic operations, staying on Foundation and targeting a secure grade 5 is the safer route. Tier decisions are usually finalised late in Year 10 or early in Year 11.
Ninety minutes for 80 marks works out at slightly more than a minute per mark, but the practical rule is to let marks dictate time: a 1-mark question stays under a minute, a 3-mark question gets four minutes, and anything worth 5 marks or more earns eight to ten minutes. Spend the first five minutes reading the whole paper and tagging questions as secure, contestable or last resort. When checking, do not restart from question one; instead inspect the three highest-risk areas, namely units and required accuracy, fractions that still need simplifying, and whether your answer to a word problem actually addresses the quantity asked for. Save the final ten minutes for unfinished questions, because half a correct method is worth more than nothing when marks are awarded by step.
Once the structure is understood, revision turns into a concrete checklist. Complete one timed Paper 1 every week to build hand-calculation speed; sit a full three-paper mock every fortnight to train stamina and pacing; keep an error log split into AO1 and AO3 categories, patching methods in the first and reading comprehension in the second; and derive every formula on the sheet by hand at least once so that rearranging becomes natural. None of this needs extra textbooks, only past papers, a timer and a classification sheet. Real improvement comes from exploiting the pattern, not from stacking up more questions.
Looking back over five years of past papers, the marks lost cluster into a small number of recurring categories, and each is worth a deliberate pre-exam audit. The first is misreading: the question asks how much was added while the answer gives the new total, or it asks for a ratio while the answer gives a difference. The second is substitution error: the formula is right but the radius is used where the diameter belongs, or a percentage of 12 percent is entered as the number 12. The third is a dropped constraint, where a stated condition such as a maximum of 40 people or x being a positive integer never appears in the final answer and the judgement mark disappears with it. The fourth is presentation, where steps are skipped or several equals signs are strung along one line so the examiner cannot see where the slip happened. The fifth is a missing unit, writing 25 for an area instead of 25 cm2. Tally these five categories after every mock, and treat an item as mastered only after two consecutive clean papers.
