AQA GCSE Economics
Global Economics is the highest-weighted module of Paper 2 in the AQA GCSE Economics specification, and it is also where the strongest and weakest candidates separate most clearly. The module takes the microeconomic ideas you already know, such as price mechanisms, demand and supply, and applies them between countries through trade flows, capital movements and exchange rate changes. Many students treat this chapter as a list of definitions to memorise, then lose marks on the 9-mark and 15-mark questions that demand analysis and evaluation. This article follows the AQA specification order, breaking down Globalisation, International Trade, Exchange Rates, the Balance of Payments and Trade Barriers, with worked calculations and answer frameworks so that you can score consistently in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Globalisation: Definition and Drivers
Globalisation is the process by which national economies become more closely integrated through trade, investment, technology and the movement of people. The AQA specification expects you to explain four main drivers. First, falling transport costs: containerisation has cut the cost per tonne of shipping goods across oceans dramatically. Second, advances in communication and information technology, which make it possible to coordinate production across borders and to settle payments instantly. Third, trade liberalisation, as tariff levels between members of the World Trade Organization have been reduced repeatedly. Fourth, the expansion of multinational corporations that split production across countries to lower average costs. In an exam answer, examiners are not looking for the conclusion that "globalisation has accelerated" but for the economic mechanism behind each driver: how a fall in costs changes a firm's production decisions, and therefore changes a country's output mix and employment structure.
For evaluation, keep one symmetrical pair of arguments in mind: globalisation raises efficiency, widens consumer choice and speeds up technology diffusion, but it also amplifies the transmission of external shocks, so a disruption in a global supply chain can push up inflation in several countries at the same time. In a 15-mark answer, using efficiency versus stability as your organising tension will earn evaluation marks more reliably than a simple list of benefits and costs.
International Trade and Comparative Advantage
The core logic of international trade is comparative advantage: even if one country can produce both goods more efficiently than its trading partner, specialisation and exchange still raise total output as long as each country faces a lower opportunity cost in one of the goods. Calculating opportunity cost is the first step in any comparative advantage question and the most common source of lost marks: do not compare absolute output, compare how many units of good B must be given up to produce one more unit of good A.
Worked example: country A can produce either 100 units of food or 50 units of machines with all its resources; country B can produce either 60 units of food or 60 units of machines. For A, producing one extra machine costs 2 units of food; for B, it costs 1 unit of food. So B has a comparative advantage in machines and A has a comparative advantage in food. After specialisation and trade, the combination each country can consume lies beyond its own production possibility frontier, which is exactly where the gains from trade come from.
The benefits of trade include lower prices and wider choice for consumers, larger markets that let firms exploit economies of scale, and competitive pressure that drives technological upgrading. The costs include structural unemployment among workers in import-competing industries, greater exposure to volatility in a small number of export markets, and resources that may stay idle for a long adjustment period. AQA frequently asks you to evaluate whether a country should continue to pursue free trade. Separating short-run adjustment costs from long-run efficiency gains, and then giving a conditional conclusion, usually scores better than a one-sided judgement.
Exchange Rates and Trade Flows
An exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in another currency. Under a floating exchange rate system, the AQA specification requires four determinants: demand for exports, demand for imports, interest rate differentials and speculation. Higher export demand raises demand for the domestic currency and causes appreciation; higher import spending increases the supply of the domestic currency on the foreign exchange market and causes depreciation; a rise in domestic interest rates relative to other countries attracts capital inflows and raises currency demand; and market expectations move the rate in the short run through speculative flows.
The chain linking depreciation to trade is the main source of marks here. A depreciation lowers the foreign currency price of exports, raising foreign demand and export volumes. At the same time it raises the domestic currency price of imports, so import volumes fall. Both effects improve net exports. But the intuition behind the Marshall-Lerner condition matters: in the short run, the quantity of imports and exports may respond slowly to price changes because contracts are already signed, so the trade balance may worsen immediately after a depreciation before it improves later.
Worked calculation: a UK firm exports goods worth 20,000 US dollars. If the exchange rate moves from 1 pound = 1.25 dollars to 1 pound = 1.40 dollars, the firm's sterling revenue falls from 16,000 pounds to about 14,286 pounds. For an exporting firm, an appreciation therefore compresses revenue measured in the domestic currency unless it raises foreign currency prices, and raising prices may reduce sales volume. A full answer must present both the price effect and the quantity effect: stating that "appreciation is bad" earns no analysis marks on its own.
Balance of Payments
The balance of payments records all transactions between a country and the rest of the world. It is split into the current account, covering the trade balance plus income and transfers, and the financial account, covering investment flows. The AQA focus is on the causes and consequences of a current account deficit. Causes include falling export competitiveness, strong domestic demand pulling in imports, and persistent currency appreciation that erodes the price advantage of exports. Consequences include the need to finance the deficit with capital inflows, which builds external debt, and later interest and dividend payments that worsen the current account still further.
One common misconception deserves an explicit warning: a current account deficit is not the same as a country losing money. A deficit means the country bought more goods and services from abroad than it sold, and it therefore received an equal amount of capital inflows, for example foreign purchases of domestic assets. Evaluation should state the conditions under which that financing is sustainable: if inflows fund productive investment that builds future export capacity, the deficit can be manageable; if they merely finance consumption, sustainability weakens significantly.
Trade Barriers and the Costs of Globalisation
Trade barriers take three main forms: tariffs, quotas and non-tariff barriers such as technical standards, subsidies and administrative procedures. A tariff protects domestic producers by raising the price of imports, but it also creates consumer and efficiency losses: resources move into the protected industry, and if that industry has no comparative advantage, total output falls. Evaluation of a tariff should identify both the gainers (domestic producers and some jobs) and the losers (domestic consumers, downstream firms using imported inputs, and exporters facing retaliation abroad).
On developing countries and globalisation, a standard evaluation line for AQA is that integration into global value chains brings capital, technology and employment, but can also create dependence on primary product exports, whose prices are volatile and whose income elasticity of demand is low, so the terms of trade may deteriorate over time. A second useful contrast is the dual impact of multinational corporations in host countries: they provide jobs and technology transfer, but may repatriate profits, hold stronger bargaining power than governments, and sometimes obtain excessive tax breaks or weak enforcement of environmental standards.
Exam Technique
The multiple choice and short answer sections of Paper 1 mainly test definitions and causal chains, so compress each topic into a one sentence mechanism, for example: the currency depreciates, the foreign currency price of exports falls, export volumes rise, and net exports improve. The 9-mark questions in Paper 2 require two developed mechanisms with clear diagram or data references, and a 15-mark answer must contain a full evaluation paragraph before the conclusion. Evaluation marks in the mark scheme usually come from three angles: the time dimension of short run versus long run, the group dimension of gainers versus losers, and the condition dimension of when the argument actually holds.
请统一使用 AQA 的官方表述:economic growth, inflation, unemployment, balance of payments, exchange rate appreciation and depreciation, opportunity cost, comparative advantage。
The final common source of lost marks is terminology. Use the exact AQA wording consistently: economic growth, inflation, unemployment, balance of payments, exchange rate appreciation and depreciation, opportunity cost and comparative advantage. Translating your understanding into precise English terms is the precondition for knowledge marks. Prepare a three layer note for every topic, definition, mechanism and evaluation, and revise only those three layers in the final week rather than rereading the whole chapter.
