Buffer solutions sit at the centre of the acids and bases topic in OCR A-Level Chemistry Module 5. They combine weak acid equilibria, the Ka expression, pH calculations and titration curves into one examinable idea. Papers 2 and 3 both use them, and the marks cluster in two places: explaining why a buffer resists pH change, and calculating the new pH after a small amount of acid or alkali is added. Many students can quote the Henderson equation yet lose marks on the explanation, because the answer must be written as specific equations showing the conjugate acid-base pair reacting with added H+ and OH- ions. This guide breaks the topic into six parts: the nature of a buffer, calculating its pH, buffer capacity and dilution, titration curves and the half-equivalence point, biological and industrial applications, and the answer structure examiners reward. Every part is bilingual, with worked examples you can reuse directly.
一、缓冲溶液的本质 / The Nature of a Buffer Solution
A buffer solution resists changes in pH when small amounts of strong acid, strong base or water are added. Three words in that definition are non-negotiable: small amounts, strong acid or base, and pH essentially unchanged. Structurally the solution must contain a conjugate acid-base pair with both species present at once, either a weak acid with its conjugate base, such as CH3COOH with CH3COO-, or a weak base with its conjugate acid, such as NH3 with NH4+. In practice a buffer is made by adding half the amount of strong alkali needed to neutralise a weak acid, or simply by mixing a weak acid with one of its salts such as sodium ethanoate.
The mark-scoring move is to write two equations. When acid is added: CH3COO- + H+ -> CH3COOH, so the conjugate base removes the added H+ ions. When alkali is added: CH3COOH + OH- -> CH3COO- + H2O, so the weak acid neutralises the added OH- ions. Because a species is always available to consume added H+ or OH-, the hydrogen ion concentration stays almost constant and the pH barely moves. Quoting the Henderson equation without these two equations usually earns only part marks.
The pH of a buffer is set by the ratio of conjugate base to weak acid, while the absolute concentrations decide how much acid or base it can absorb. Ratio controls pH, concentration controls capacity.
二、缓冲溶液 pH 的计算 / Calculating the pH of a Buffer
OCR 要求你掌握两条互相验证的路径。第一条从 Ka 表达式出发: Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA],整理后得 [H+] = Ka x [HA]/[A-]。第二条是 Henderson 方程: pH = pKa + log([A-]/[HA]),其中 pKa = -log(Ka)。
OCR expects two routes that cross-check each other. The first starts from the Ka expression, Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA], which rearranges to [H+] = Ka x [HA]/[A-]. The second is the Henderson equation, pH = pKa + log([A-]/[HA]), where pKa = -log(Ka). Both are the same idea; the second is quicker because the ratio goes straight into a logarithm.
Worked example one: equal volumes of 0.100 mol dm-3 CH3COOH and 0.200 mol dm-3 CH3COONa are mixed, with Ka = 1.8 x 10^-5 and pKa = 4.74. Mixing halves both concentrations but leaves the ratio unchanged, so pH = 4.74 + log(0.200/0.100) = 4.74 + 0.30 = 5.04. Checking with the Ka expression: [H+] = 1.8 x 10^-5 x 0.100/0.200 = 9.0 x 10^-6 mol dm-3, giving pH = 5.05, consistent with 5.04 to three significant figures.
Worked example two: equal volumes of 0.250 mol dm-3 NH3 and 0.250 mol dm-3 NH4Cl. For ammonia Kb = 1.8 x 10^-5, so pKb = 4.74 and the pKa of NH4+ is 14.00 - 4.74 = 9.26. Since [NH3] equals [NH4+], the logarithm is zero and pH = pKa = 9.26. This result is worth memorising: when the acid and its conjugate base are present in equal concentration, the buffer pH equals the pKa.
Three errors dominate. Writing the ratio upside down flips the sign of the log term. Mixing moles with concentrations while forgetting that both species share the same solution volume causes needless unit confusion. Rounding mid-calculation loses accuracy marks. OCR marks these calculations in steps, so show the Ka expression, the substitution and the logarithm separately rather than skipping lines in your head.
三、缓冲容量与稀释 / Buffer Capacity and Dilution
Buffer capacity measures how well a buffer resists pH change, and it depends on the ratio and the total concentration. Capacity is greatest when the conjugate base and weak acid are equal in concentration, which is exactly when pH equals pKa. That is why a buffer is designed with its pKa close to the target pH, ideally within one pH unit. Higher total concentration means more acid or base can be neutralised before the pH shifts appreciably.
Dilution is easy to misjudge. The Henderson equation shows that diluting a buffer lowers both concentrations in the same proportion, so the ratio, and therefore the pH, barely changes. What dilution does destroy is capacity, because fewer moles of each species remain available to absorb added acid or alkali. Temperature also shifts the pH, because Ka is temperature dependent, so the claim that a buffer pH never changes with temperature is wrong.
After adding a small amount of strong acid or alkali, work in moles. Added acid converts an equal number of moles of conjugate base into weak acid, so substitute the new mole values back into the Henderson equation. Example: 1.00 dm3 containing 0.100 mol CH3COOH and 0.100 mol CH3COO- has pH 4.74. Adding 0.010 mol HCl leaves 0.110 mol of the acid and 0.090 mol of the conjugate base, so pH = 4.74 + log(0.090/0.110) = 4.74 - 0.09 = 4.65, a drop of only 0.09 units. The same 0.010 mol HCl added to 1.00 dm3 of pure water would take the pH from 7.00 to 2.00. Quoting both numbers makes a convincing explanation.
四、滴定曲线与半当量点 / Titration Curves and the Half-Equivalence Point
The titration curve of a weak acid with a strong base has four readable features. The starting point is the pH of the weak acid itself, estimated by [H+] = sqrt(Ka x c): for 0.100 mol dm-3 CH3COOH this gives sqrt(1.8 x 10^-5 x 0.100) = 1.34 x 10^-3 mol dm-3 and pH 2.87. The flat middle region is the buffer region, because the partly neutralised solution is itself a buffer. The half-equivalence point, where exactly half the acid has been neutralised, is where [HA] = [A-] and therefore pH = pKa, which is why this point is used to measure the pKa of a weak acid experimentally. Beyond the equivalence point the pH exceeds 7, because the salt formed hydrolyses: CH3COO- + H2O is in equilibrium with CH3COOH + OH-, releasing hydroxide ions.
The titration of a strong acid with a weak base mirrors this: the pH starts low, the equivalence point pH is below 7 because NH4+ + H2O is in equilibrium with NH3 + H3O+, and the half-equivalence point reveals the pKa of the conjugate acid NH4+. The indicator must change colour within the steep section of the curve, so weak acid with strong base calls for phenolphthalein (roughly 8.3 to 10.0) and strong acid with weak base calls for methyl orange (roughly 3.1 to 4.4). In curve questions, label the starting pH, the half-equivalence point, whether the equivalence pH is above or below 7, and the buffer region; those four annotations usually cover the description marks.
五、生物与工业中的缓冲体系 / Buffers in Biology and Industry
Blood is the most famous buffer in biology. Its main system is carbonic acid with hydrogencarbonate, H2CO3/HCO3-. When acid arrives, HCO3- + H+ -> H2CO3, and the carbonic acid formed breaks down into CO2 and H2O, with the excess CO2 breathed out by the lungs. When alkali arrives, H2CO3 + OH- -> HCO3- + H2O, and the surplus hydrogencarbonate is excreted by the kidneys. Blood pH is held between 7.35 and 7.45; below 7.35 is acidosis and above 7.45 is alkalosis. The phosphate buffer H2PO4-/HPO4^2- has a pKa of about 7.2, protects the intracellular fluid, and is used in contact lens solutions and some injections.
Buffers are equally common in industry and everyday products. Fermentation needs a stable pH so that enzyme activity and product yield stay high. Dyes and electroplating baths use buffers to keep colour and coating quality consistent. Carbonate and phosphate systems keep soil pH within the range crops tolerate. Skin care products use citric acid with sodium citrate to match skin pH, and even swimming pools rely on carbonate buffering to prevent sharp pH swings. In application questions, naming the conjugate acid-base pair, showing that the pKa is close to the target pH, and writing both direction equations is enough for full marks.
六、答题结构与易错清单 / Answer Structure and Common Pitfalls
The explanation question has a four-step answer. First, state that the solution contains a weak acid and its conjugate base. Second, write the equation for added acid being absorbed: CH3COO- + H+ -> CH3COOH. Third, write the equation for added alkali being neutralised: CH3COOH + OH- -> CH3COO- + H2O. Fourth, close with one sentence saying that the concentration of H+ changes very little, so the pH stays almost constant. All four steps together secure the full marks.
In calculations, the marks sit at each step: the Ka expression, the substitution, the logarithm and the final answer to three significant figures with units (pH itself has none). The pitfalls to avoid are these. Writing pH = pKa + log([HA]/[A-]) with the ratio inverted. Substituting Ka without converting to pKa. Forgetting that equal-volume mixing changes both concentrations in the same proportion. Confusing the maximum-capacity condition with the equivalence point. Claiming a buffer resists acid and alkali indefinitely. Describing dilution as a large pH change. And overlooking how different the water control is, where 0.010 mol HCl in 1.00 dm3 moves the pH from 7.00 to 2.00. Sidestep all seven and the Paper 2 calculations become routine.
学习建议 / Study Tips
First, treat the Henderson equation and the Ka expression as two cross-checking tools and calculate twice per question; the self-check catches sign errors. Second, memorise pKa = 4.74 for ethanoic acid and pKa = 9.26 for the ammonium ion, since many questions reuse them. Third, when drawing a titration curve, mark the four key features first and then sketch the smooth line. Fourth, in explanation questions write the two equations before the conclusion, never in reverse. Fifth, practise with moles and convert back to concentration only at the end. Sixth, record every mistake as a one-line error type and revise only that list before the exam. Seventh, in timed practice leave three minutes to check significant figures and units.
