Question 5 of GCSE English Language Paper 2 is the only task in the paper where there is no source text to borrow from. You have around 45 minutes to produce a piece of persuasive or argumentative writing worth 24 marks for content and organisation (AO5) plus 16 marks for technical accuracy (AO6). AQA, Edexcel and OCR word their mark schemes differently, but examiners reward the same four things: a clear position, a structure that keeps moving forward, controlled rhetorical devices, and varied sentence shapes. This guide turns persuasive writing into a repeatable procedure you can take straight into the exam hall.
1. 先认清 Q5 的评分逻辑 What Q5 Is Really Marking
AO5 看的不是"你写了多少修辞", 而是你的观点是否清晰、段落是否互相支撑、整篇文章是否在推进一个论证。考官拿到的稿子很多都堆满了 DAFOREST 缩写里的手法, 却从头到尾没有一个明确的立场。AO6 看的是句子边界的准确性、标点的用法、词汇的精确度以及拼写。两条线分开评分, 意味着你不需要用复杂词汇冒险: 用准确的简单词加清晰的句式, 比用错的大词得分更高。
AO5 is not a count of how many devices you can cram in. It asks whether your viewpoint is clear, whether each paragraph builds on the last, and whether the piece moves an argument forward. Many scripts are stuffed with techniques from the DAFOREST list yet never commit to an actual position, and examiners mark that as a failure of content, not of effort. AO6 is separate and rewards accurate sentence boundaries, purposeful punctuation, precise vocabulary and correct spelling. Because the two strands are marked independently, reaching for complicated vocabulary is a bad trade: an accurate simple word plus clean sentence structure scores higher than an ambitious word used wrongly.
2. 45 分钟的时间表 A Timing Plan That Works
建议的时间分配是: 5 分钟审题与列提纲, 32 到 35 分钟写作, 5 到 8 分钟通读检查。审题这 5 分钟最关键: 先圈出题目的文体要求 (letter, speech, article, essay), 再圈出读者对象 (head teacher, local council, magazine readers), 最后圈出任务动词 (argue, persuade, explain)。这三项决定你的称呼方式、语气和修辞密度。开写之前用三行写下三个论点和一句立场句, 后面的段落就只是把这句立场展开。
A workable split is five minutes planning, thirty two to thirty five minutes writing, and five to eight minutes proofreading. Planning is where the marks are protected. Circle the form first (letter, speech, article or essay), then the audience (a head teacher, a council, magazine readers), then the task verb (argue, persuade or explain). Those three choices decide your opening address, your register and how heavily you should use rhetoric. Before writing a single paragraph, note three reasons and one sentence that states your position. The rest of the piece simply unfolds that sentence.
3. 结构骨架: 让文章往前走 The Five Part Skeleton
把整篇分成五个功能段落: 开场、理由一、理由二、反方与反驳、收尾。开场用具体场景或数据切入; 两个理由段各自承担一个独立论点, 不要在同一段里塞进三个想法; 反方段先承认对方合理之处, 再用更有力的证据推翻; 收尾回到开场的画面或问题本身。这个骨架的价值在于: 即使你临时想不出更好的句子, 段落顺序本身已经在向考官展示结构的推进感, 而结构推进正是 AO5 高分段最明显的特征。
Structure the response as five functional paragraphs: an opening, a first reason, a second reason, a counter argument with a rebuttal, and a close. Open with a concrete scene or a striking statistic. Let each reason paragraph carry exactly one idea rather than three half ideas competing for space. In the counter argument paragraph, concede what is fair about the other side, then dismantle it with stronger evidence. End by returning to the image or question from the opening. The point of the skeleton is that the sequence itself demonstrates progression, which is exactly what separates the top band from the middle in AO5, even when the individual sentences are still simple.
4. 开场段: 第一句就要有态度 Opening With Attitude
不要用 "I am going to write about..." 这种开场, 它在评分表里等于零分信号。三种高性价比开场: 一是场景式, 直接把读者放进画面; 二是数据式, 用一个具体数字制造压力; 三是反问式, 让读者被迫在心里回答。开场句控制在 15 个词以内, 之后立刻用一句话点明立场。下面三个例子可以直接替换主题词使用: 场景式 "Outside the town library on a Tuesday evening, eight teenagers are sharing one broken laptop."; 数据式 "Three in ten students in this school have no quiet place to study at home."; 反问式 "If we accept that a bus pass costs more than a term of books, what exactly are we protecting?"。
Never open with a sentence such as I am going to write about, which signals a low band before the examiner has read your first argument. Three openers pay for themselves. The scene opener drops the reader into a specific moment. The statistic opener uses a concrete number to create pressure. The rhetorical question opener forces the reader to answer silently in their own head. Keep the opening sentence under fifteen words, then commit to your position in the very next sentence. Examples you can re-use with any topic: Outside the town library on a Tuesday evening, eight teenagers are sharing one broken laptop. Three in ten students in this school have no quiet place to study at home. If we accept that a bus pass costs more than a term of books, what exactly are we protecting?
5. 主体段: 一个理由加一个细节 Body Paragraphs With Weight
每个理由段按四步走: 论点句、解释、证据、回扣立场。论点句必须是可争论的判断, 而不是事实陈述。解释部分回答"为什么会这样", 证据部分给具体的人、地点、数字或时间。回扣立场只需要半句话, 例如 "This is precisely why the council cannot postpone the decision."。一段 90 到 120 词就足够, 关键是别把三个想法压进一段: 考官在批注里最常写的评语就是 "some development", 那就是想法太多、展开太少。
Build each reason paragraph with four moves: a topic sentence, an explanation, evidence, and a link back to your position. The topic sentence must be a debatable judgement rather than a statement of fact. The explanation answers the question why, and the evidence supplies a named person, a place, a number or a time. The link back needs only half a sentence, for example: This is precisely why the council cannot postpone the decision. Ninety to one hundred and twenty words is enough per paragraph. The most common examiner comment on mid band scripts is some development, which means too many ideas and too little unpacking of each one.
6. 反方段: 承认再推翻 Concede Then Dismantle
反方段的写法几乎可以公式化: "It is true that..., and the argument has some force. Yet...". 先给出对方最合理的理由, 然后指出它的代价、前提错误或适用范围有限。这一步在高分段几乎是必需项, 因为它同时展示了两样东西: 你理解问题的复杂性, 并且你的立场经得起挑战。举例: "It is true that extending the school day costs money, and the argument has some force. Yet the cost of one hour of teaching is smaller than the cost of one failed year of retakes."。
The counter argument paragraph is almost formulaic, and that is an advantage under time pressure. Open with It is true that, name the strongest version of the opposing view, and concede that it has some force. Then show its cost, its false premise, or the limited range in which it applies. In the upper bands this move is close to compulsory, because it proves two things at once: that you understand why the issue is contested, and that your position survives the strongest objection. A usable pattern: It is true that extending the school day costs money, and the argument has some force. Yet the cost of one hour of teaching is smaller than the cost of one failed year of retakes.
7. DAFOREST 清单与三个常见误用 The Device List And Its Traps
DAFOREST 指 Direct address, Alliteration, Facts, Opinion, Rhetorical question, Emotive language, Statistics, Triples。真正拉分的不是数量, 而是密度控制: 每一个手法都要服务一个具体目的。三个最常见的误用是: 把三个形容词堆成 triple 却没有任何内容增量; 全篇使用直接称呼 "you" 却没有建立可信度; 数据编造得过于圆整 (例如 "90 percent of students") 反而削弱说服力。修辞密度建议控制在每 100 词一到两处, 留出空间给论证本身。
DAFOREST stands for direct address, alliteration, facts, opinion, rhetorical questions, emotive language, statistics and triples. Marks come from control rather than quantity, so every device should serve a specific purpose. Three traps appear again and again. First, a triple built from three near synonym adjectives adds sound but no meaning. Second, direct address using you throughout the piece builds no credibility on its own. Third, invented statistics that are suspiciously round, such as ninety percent of students, weaken your authority instead of strengthening it. Aim for roughly one or two devices per hundred words and spend the rest of the space on reasoning.
8. 句式与标点: 得分最稳的一块 Sentences And Punctuation
AO6 的分最容易拿也最容易丢。做法只有三条: 短句与长句交替, 一个短句单独成段用来强调; 分号连接两个相关判断, 冒号引出清单或解释; 主语不要永远是 "I think"。把 "I think social media is harmful because it wastes time and it also affects sleep and it makes people compare themselves to others." 改成 "Social media wastes time, distorts sleep, and teaches teenagers to measure themselves against strangers."。后者字数更少, 分数更高。检查阶段优先看三类错误: 逗号连接两个完整句子、主谓不一致、时态混用。
AO6 is the steadiest source of marks and the easiest to lose. Three habits cover most of it. Alternate short and long sentences, and let a short sentence stand alone when you want emphasis. Use a semicolon to join two related judgements and a colon to introduce a list or an explanation. Avoid starting every sentence with I think. Rewrite this sentence: I think social media is harmful because it wastes time and it also affects sleep and it makes people compare themselves to others. A stronger version is: Social media wastes time, distorts sleep, and teaches teenagers to measure themselves against strangers. It is shorter and worth more. When proofreading, hunt three errors first: comma splices, subject verb disagreement, and mixed tenses.
9. 收尾段: 回到开场的画面 Ending That Circles Back
收尾不要简单重复开头, 也不要引入新论点。有效的收尾做三件事: 重申立场 (换一种说法), 给出一个行动请求或预测, 最后用一句短的画面句收束。例如呼吁图书馆延长开放时间: "Extend the opening hours by two evenings a week, and next Tuesday those eight students will each have a desk of their own."。这样的结尾同时完成了结构闭环和情感回扣, 考官在读完后能立刻说出你的立场和你要什么。
Do not simply repeat the opening, and never introduce a new argument in the final paragraph. An effective close does three jobs: restates the position in fresh wording, makes one concrete request or prediction, and finishes on a short image. A closing for a campaign to extend library hours might read: Extend the opening hours by two evenings a week, and next Tuesday those eight students will each have a desk of their own. The structure closes the circle, the emotion lands, and the examiner can state your position and your demand in one sentence after finishing the script.
10. 高分片段拆解 A Worked Fragment
题目: "Write a speech for your school council arguing that the school should fund a homework club." 开场: "At four o'clock this afternoon, forty two students will leave this building with nowhere quiet to work." (具体场景加具体数字)。理由段: "Attendance data from three neighbouring schools shows that a supervised hour raises completion rates by more than a fifth. That is not a theory; it is a measurement." (证据加回扣)。反方段: "It is true that staffing a club costs money, and the argument has some force. Yet the cost of two tutors for one hour is less than the cost of one resit entry." 收尾: "Fund the room, and by November the corridor outside the library will be empty at four o'clock." 整段大约 180 词, 但包含了场景、数据、反驳、行动请求和画面回扣, 这就是 24 分档位看重的东西。
Task: write a speech for your school council arguing that the school should fund a homework club. Opening: At four o'clock this afternoon, forty two students will leave this building with nowhere quiet to work. That is a specific scene with a specific number. Reason paragraph: Attendance data from three neighbouring schools shows that a supervised hour raises completion rates by more than a fifth. That is not a theory, it is a measurement. Counter argument: It is true that staffing a club costs money, and the argument has some force. Yet the cost of two tutors for one hour is less than the cost of one resit entry. Close: Fund the room, and by November the corridor outside the library will be empty at four o'clock. The whole fragment runs to about one hundred and eighty words, yet it contains a scene, evidence, a rebuttal, a demand and a returning image, which is what the top band rewards.
11. 常见失分点 Common Ways To Lose Marks
Five avoidable losses recur. First, the wrong form: a task asking for a letter turned into a general essay with no address and no sign off. Second, the wrong register: slang appearing in a letter to a head teacher. Third, paragraphs that run in parallel, so the three reasons could be reordered at random, which shows no development into higher level argument. Fourth, slogans without any evidence behind them. Fifth, presentation and spelling errors that quietly drain AO6, especially past tense forms and plurals of common words. Write these five lines at the top of your plan and check them one by one at the end. It is far more productive than rereading the whole script without a target.
把这些步骤固定成肌肉记忆之后, Paper 2 Question 5 就不再是临场发挥题, 而是一道流程题: 圈题型、定立场、列两点、留反驳、写收尾。考前四周每周完整写一篇并计时 45 分钟, 用上面的清单自评, 提升幅度通常比反复读范文更明显。
Once these steps become muscle memory, Paper 2 Question 5 stops being an improvisation task and becomes a procedure: identify the form, fix the position, note two reasons, save room for a rebuttal, and plan the close. Write one full timed response a week for the four weeks before the exam and mark it against the checklist above. The improvement is usually larger than rereading model answers, because the checklist targets the two things examiners actually reward: progression and accuracy.
