OCR GCSE

The Chemical Reactions unit of OCR GCSE Chemistry (J248) and OCR Combined Science is the backbone of the whole GCSE course. It links equations, collision theory, energy changes, electrolysis and redox into one continuous chain of reasoning. Most marks are lost not because students never saw the content, but because they cannot connect the ideas using the three big themes: conservation, energy, and electrons. This bilingual guide covers the whole unit in one place, for Year 9 to Year 11 students revising at any point in the year.

状态符号是 s(solid 固体)、l(liquid 液体)、g(gas 气体)、aq(aqueous 水溶液)。例如盐酸与氢氧化钠的中和反应写作 HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)。

Writing equations is the first skill in chemistry, and OCR expects three levels: word equations, symbol equations, and full equations with state symbols. State symbols are s for solid, l for liquid, g for gas and aq for aqueous solution. The neutralisation of hydrochloric acid by sodium hydroxide is written as HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l). Balancing is nothing more than conservation of mass: the number of atoms of each element must be identical on both sides. Balance the elements inside the most complicated formula first, and leave oxygen and hydrogen until the end. Thermal decomposition is another high-frequency topic. Calcium carbonate decomposes on heating as CaCO3(s) -> CaO(s) + CO2(g), which is the industrial route from limestone to quicklime.

Every explanation of reaction rate rests on collision theory. Particles must collide, but not every collision causes a reaction. Only collisions with energy greater than or equal to the activation energy are successful, and the activation energy is the minimum energy needed for a reaction to happen. So there are only two ways to speed a reaction up. First, make collisions more frequent, by increasing concentration, raising the pressure of gases, or grinding a solid into a powder to increase surface area. Second, make a larger fraction of collisions energetic enough, by raising the temperature or adding a catalyst. Temperature is especially powerful because it does two jobs at once: it increases collision frequency and it raises the average kinetic energy of the particles, so the proportion of particles with enough energy rises sharply. A catalyst lowers the activation energy by providing an alternative pathway, and it is unchanged in mass and chemical properties at the end. It does not change the overall energy difference between reactants and products.

OCR expects you to design and explain three classic rate practicals. The first uses marble chips with dilute hydrochloric acid, measuring the volume of carbon dioxide produced per unit time, or the loss in mass, to compare rates with surface area as the variable, comparing lumps with powder. The second uses sodium thiosulfate with hydrochloric acid, which produces a sulfur precipitate. You time how long the solution takes to become cloudy, and the independent variable can be concentration or temperature. The third uses magnesium ribbon with dilute hydrochloric acid, collecting the volume of hydrogen over time to plot a graph, with acid concentration as the independent variable. When you interpret these graphs, remember that the gradient of the curve is the rate. A steeper gradient means a faster reaction. As reactants are used up the rate falls and the curve flattens. If you only raise the temperature, the final amount of product, that is the plateau height, stays the same and you simply get there sooner. If you increase the amount of reactant, the plateau itself is higher. This last point is the most common source of lost marks in explanation questions.

Every chemical reaction involves a change in energy. Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings and raise the temperature, as in combustion, neutralisation and most oxidation reactions. Endothermic reactions take energy in from the surroundings and lower the temperature, as in thermal decomposition and the reaction between citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. Bond energies explain why. Breaking a chemical bond takes energy in, and forming a bond releases energy. If the energy released when new bonds form is greater than the energy taken in to break the old ones, the reaction is exothermic overall. On a reaction profile, the energy difference between reactants and products is the overall energy change, and the height from the reactants up to the peak is the activation energy. You should be able to label both arrows clearly, because draw-and-label questions on reaction profiles earn marks directly.

Electrolysis uses a direct current to break down an ionic compound, either molten or dissolved in water. The rule to remember is simple. The cathode, the negative electrode, attracts positive ions and reduction happens there. The anode, the positive electrode, attracts negative ions and oxidation happens there. In molten sodium chloride the cathode gives sodium and the anode gives chlorine. In sodium chloride solution the cathode gives hydrogen rather than sodium, because hydrogen ions are reduced more easily than sodium ions, while the anode still gives chlorine. When you electrolyse copper sulfate solution with copper electrodes, copper dissolves from the anode into the solution and copper is deposited at the cathode, so the blue colour of the solution stays roughly the same. This is the principle behind copper refining. The electrolysis of water gives hydrogen and oxygen in a volume ratio of about two to one, and you can test for oxygen with a glowing splint and for hydrogen with a lit splint.

OIL RIG:Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons。

OCR defines redox in two layers: in terms of oxygen, and in terms of electrons. Oxidation is gain of oxygen or loss of electrons. Reduction is loss of oxygen or gain of electrons. The two always happen together, because electrons cannot simply disappear, which is why the reactions are called redox reactions. A useful memory aid is OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons. Displacement reactions of metals are classic examples. When iron reacts with copper sulfate, Fe(s) + CuSO4(aq) -> FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s), the iron is oxidised and the copper ions are reduced. In acid and alkali chemistry, acids produce hydrogen ions in water and alkalis produce hydroxide ions. Neutralisation produces a salt and water, and in ionic terms the H+ ions and OH- ions simply combine to form water. A pH below 7 is acidic, exactly 7 is neutral and above 7 is alkaline. Indicators such as phenolphthalein or universal indicator show you when the end point is reached.

第二条是溶液浓度等于摩尔数除以体积(concentration = moles / volume,单位 mol/dm3)。 先写方程式 Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) -> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g),计量比是 1 比 1。

Calculations in this unit usually need only three formulas, combined with the ratio from a balanced equation. The first is moles equal mass divided by relative formula mass. The second is concentration equal to moles divided by volume, in moles per dm3. The third is that at room temperature and pressure one mole of any gas occupies 24 dm3. Here is a typical question. 4.8 g of magnesium reacts completely with excess dilute hydrochloric acid, and you must find the volume of hydrogen produced. Start with the equation Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) -> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g), where the ratio of magnesium to hydrogen is one to one. The relative atomic mass of magnesium is 24, so the moles of magnesium are 4.8 divided by 24, which is 0.2 mol. The moles of hydrogen are therefore also 0.2 mol, and the volume is 0.2 multiplied by 24, which is 4.8 dm3. In calculation questions, always balance the equation first, then show the units, then check that the number of significant figures in your answer matches the question.

Finally, exam technique. The command word in an OCR question decides the shape of your answer. State needs a single conclusion. Describe needs the observations or the steps. Explain requires a cause, usually a sentence of the form because collisions become more frequent or because the particles now have more than the activation energy. Evaluate needs both sides and a judgement. For the six-mark extended response questions you must use correct chemical vocabulary and keep the argument linked, and three or four well-explained points usually score better than five or six disconnected sentences. Four mistakes come up again and again. First, unbalanced equations or missing state symbols. Second, explaining a rate change by saying the reaction is faster without saying why. Third, confusing the effect of a catalyst or a temperature change with a change in the amount of product. Fourth, mixing up which species gains and which loses electrons in a redox reaction. A useful revision habit is to write your own one-page list of the variables, control variables and measurements for each required practical, and read only that page in the ten minutes before the exam.
