IB Economics Paper 1 is the extended-response paper of the course: there are no multiple-choice items and no calculations, only one complete essay written under a strict time limit. Most students who underperform here know the theory perfectly well; what they lack is a writing sequence that matches what examiners are told to look for. This guide sets out the marking logic, a repeatable four-move skeleton for the 10-mark explanation, an evaluation framework for the 15-mark discussion, a method for building a real-world example bank, timing plans and the mistakes that cap scripts in the middle bands.

Under the syllabus first assessed in 2022, Paper 1 runs for 1 hour 15 minutes with 5 minutes of reading time, and SL and HL sit the same paper format. The questions are drawn from all four syllabus units: microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy and development economics. The single most important instruction is that you answer one question in total, chosen from three, not one from each of Section A and Section B. Every question has two parts: part (a) for 10 marks and part (b) for 15 marks, 25 marks in total. Paper 1 carries 30 per cent of the final grade at SL and 20 per cent at HL, so for SL students roughly a third of the subject result is decided in this one essay.

Paper 1 is marked with level descriptors, not with a tick per correct point. The examiner first decides which band your whole answer sits in, then adjusts within it. Two consequences follow. First, an answer is capped by its weakest required dimension, so terminology, diagram, chain of reasoning, real-world application, evaluation and a justified conclusion all have to be present to reach the top band. Second, padding is worthless: restating an explanation in different words will not move a mid-band script upwards. The bands map onto the assessment objectives. AO1 is knowledge and understanding, shown through accurate definitions and terminology. AO2 is application and analysis, shown through applying theory to a specific context and through correct, explained diagrams. AO3 is synthesis and evaluation, shown through weighing arguments, examining limitations and reaching a judgement. AO4 covers skills such as structure, diagram conventions, data interpretation and quantitative method. Part (a) rewards AO1 and AO2; part (b) rewards AO3 supported by the others. That division is why evaluation added to part (a) gains nothing and costs time.

Part (a) almost always uses the command term explain, and top-band answers follow the same four moves. First, define the key terms in one or two accurate sentences, for example indirect tax, demerit good or price elasticity of demand. Keep definitions short: they carry few marks, but their absence signals a weakness in AO1. Second, draw a fully labelled diagram: axes, curve labels, a title, the original and new equilibrium, the direction of change, and any shaded area that carries meaning. Draw the diagram this question needs rather than reproducing a generic one from memory. Third, build a chain of reasoning that connects each link, and refer explicitly to the diagram in the prose. Fourth, close by answering the variable named in the question and stating the final outcome.

The third move is where marks are lost most often. Taking expansionary monetary policy and unemployment as an example, writing that interest rates fall so unemployment falls compresses several creditable steps into one. A complete chain reads: the policy rate is cut, commercial banks' funding costs fall, interest-sensitive consumption and investment rise, aggregate demand shifts from AD1 to AD2, real output rises, firms hire more labour to expand production, and cyclical unemployment therefore falls. Each link is separately creditable, so a chain of reasoning scores far better than a bare conclusion.

Part (b) does not simply ask for a longer version of part (a). It adds two things part (a) never tests: conditional evaluation and a developed real-world example. Evaluation is not a list of disadvantages; it is reasoning about the conditions under which a claim holds. A practical checklist is CLASPP: reach and justify a Conclusion; consider the Long run versus the short run; examine the Assumptions the theory relies on; identify the Stakeholders who gain and lose; decide Priorities in this specific context; and weigh Pros and cons. Two or three dimensions developed properly beat six mentioned in a single sentence each.

Here is the pattern applied to whether an indirect tax reduces consumption of a demerit good. In the short run, if demand is price inelastic, the tax cuts quantity consumed only slightly while raising price and reducing consumer surplus. In the long run, with substitutes available and better information, demand becomes more elastic and the reduction in quantity is larger. On distribution, the tax is regressive: it takes a larger share of income from lower-income households, which conflicts with the equity dimension of the policy objective. For the government, the revenue raised can fund subsidies for substitutes or public healthcare. The judgement therefore depends on elasticity and on the availability of substitutes: where demand is inelastic and substitutes are scarce, an indirect tax is a weak instrument and should be combined with information provision and regulation; where substitutes are plentiful, it becomes effective and relatively low-cost. A conclusion stated with conditions earns far more than a bare assertion that it depends.

The biggest single lever on Paper 1 is not how much theory you memorise but how much specific material you can deploy quickly. Specific means naming a country, market, firm or policy and adding a concrete fact about it, such as a fuel subsidy reform, a rent control policy with its year of introduction, or a change in a national minimum wage. Phrases such as some governments subsidise certain goods count as no application at all.

Build four short lists, one per unit, with three to five entries each, and annotate every entry with the diagram it fits and the evaluation angle it supports. For microeconomics, keep one specific tax, one subsidy and one price control. For macroeconomics, keep one interest-rate change, one fiscal stimulus and one round of quantitative easing. For the global economy, keep one tariff change, one exchange-rate intervention and one trade agreement. For development, keep one microfinance programme, one education or health investment and one debt relief case. When revising, do not merely reread the list; practise plugging any entry into an unseen question within thirty seconds.

Budget the 75 minutes deliberately: five minutes to read all three questions, choose one and outline; 20 to 22 minutes for part (a); 30 to 35 minutes for part (b); and five minutes to check diagram labels, terminology and the presence of a conclusion. Choose the question by the strength of your example bank and the clarity of your evaluation angles, not only by which unit you like best, because the demands of part (a) rarely change between questions while the marks in part (b) depend heavily on specific material.

On layout, draw the diagram before writing the paragraph it supports, place it beside that paragraph rather than at the end of the script, and refer to it explicitly in the text. Separate part (a) from part (b) with a blank line and clear numbering. Label diagrams by hand in pencil and ruler, because an unlabelled curve cannot be credited. Length is not the objective: part (a) normally needs 250 to 350 words and part (b) about 450 to 600, and filling the page is not the same as answering the question.

Six mistakes cap otherwise competent scripts. Treating evaluate as explain leaves part (b) with mechanism but no judgement, which locks the answer in a middle band. Diagrams that are unlabelled or inconsistent with the prose, such as shifting supply in the text while shifting demand on the graph, lose application marks. Vague definitions, for example describing a recession as the economy getting worse rather than two consecutive quarters of negative real GDP growth, weaken AO1. Generic examples without a named country, market or policy earn almost nothing. Missing or unsupported conclusions, such as stating that the policy has both advantages and disadvantages, fail the top band outright. Finally, poor time control means part (b) ends mid-sentence and the evaluation and conclusion never appear.

Over four weeks, work like this. In week one, compile three specific cases per unit and record the matching diagram and two evaluation angles for each. In week two, write one full part (a) every day in 20 minutes and then audit it against the four-move skeleton, looking above all for breaks in the chain of reasoning. In week three, write only the evaluation paragraphs of part (b), requiring at least two evaluation dimensions and a conditional conclusion each time. In week four, sit two timed 75-minute papers per week using past questions, then self-assess against four criteria: are the definitions precise, can the diagram be read on its own, is the example specific, and does the conclusion state conditions. In the final three days, stop writing new answers and reread your example tables and error list instead.

Paper 1 ultimately measures whether you can complete a chain of reasoning in the order an examiner expects and close it with a defensible judgement, under time pressure. Turn the four-move explanation skeleton, the CLASPP evaluation checklist and your unit-by-unit example bank into reflexes, and top-band marks in both parts stop depending on luck. The students who separate themselves are those who can attach a specific real-world example to an unseen question within thirty seconds.
