Redox is the single most heavily examined topic in Edexcel A-Level Chemistry Papers 1 and 2. It appears in multiple choice questions where you must track changes in oxidation number, and in extended answer questions where you must balance half equations, calculate moles, and explain the direction of electron flow in an electrochemical cell. Many students memorise OIL RIG yet still freeze when a transition metal complex or an ambivalent reagent such as hydrogen peroxide appears. This article starts from the underlying electron transfer, then works through oxidation number rules, half equation balancing, common oxidising and reducing agents, standard electrode potentials, and redox titration calculations, finishing with the mistakes that cost the most marks in the exam hall. IB and AQA students can follow exactly the same framework.
The essence of a redox reaction is the transfer of electrons between atoms or ions. The species that loses electrons is oxidised, and the species that gains electrons is reduced. The two processes are inseparable because electrons cannot vanish. Do not judge redox by whether oxygen appears in the equation; judge it by the change in oxidation number. An increase in oxidation number means the species has been oxidised and is acting as the reducing agent, while a decrease means it has been reduced and is acting as the oxidising agent. In Zn + CuSO4 -> ZnSO4 + Cu, zinc rises from 0 to +2 and is oxidised, so zinc is the reducing agent, while copper falls from +2 to 0 and is reduced, so copper ions are the oxidising agent. Every later calculation in this module builds on this two line analysis.
Assigning oxidation numbers is the foundation of every mark in this topic, and the rules must be automatic. Elements in their standard state are 0. A monatomic ion equals its charge. Oxygen is normally -2, but -1 in peroxides such as H2O2 and Na2O2. Hydrogen is normally +1, but -1 in metal hydrides such as NaH. Fluorine is always -1. The sum of oxidation numbers equals zero in a neutral compound and equals the overall charge in a polyatomic ion. Transition metals adopt several oxidation states, so they must be deduced from the rest of the species. The classic trap is hydrogen peroxide, which acts as an oxidising agent towards iodide ions but as a reducing agent towards manganate(VII) ions. Its role is decided by whether the partner species is oxidised or reduced, never by its own chemical reputation. Misreading neutral molecules as ions, or mishandling bracketed ligand groups, is where most careless marks are lost.
Half equations are the universal tool for balancing redox reactions, and Edexcel expects you to balance complex ionic equations in both acidic and alkaline conditions, especially those involving oxoanions. The electron ion method follows fixed steps. First write the skeletal equation and balance all elements except oxygen and hydrogen. Balance oxygen with water molecules. Balance hydrogen with hydrogen ions, or, in alkaline conditions, by adding water to one side and hydroxide ions to the other. Finally balance charge with electrons. Conservation of electrons is the key idea, because the number of electrons lost by the oxidation half must equal the number gained by the reduction half, so the two halves are scaled to the lowest common multiple before they are added and the electrons cancel. For manganate(VII) oxidising iron(II) in acid solution, MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O combines with five copies of Fe2+ -> Fe3+ + e- to give MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ -> Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O, with both charge and mass conserved.
The strong oxidising agents that recur in exam papers include acidified manganate(VII), dichromate(VI), chlorine, concentrated nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide. Acidified manganate(VII) is purple and is reduced to almost colourless manganese(II), while dichromate(VI) is orange and is reduced to green chromium(III). The strong reducing agents include reactive metals, iodide ions, iron(II) ions, thiosulfate ions, and hydrogen. The colour change of the reagent is often the endpoint signal in a titration. Manganate(VII) is self indicating, and the endpoint is the first permanent pale pink that survives half a minute of swirling. In iodine thiosulfate titrations, starch indicator must be added only near the endpoint, because adding it too early locks iodine inside a very dark complex that releases iodine only slowly. That delay pushes you past the true endpoint and makes the calculated concentration too high.
The standard electrode potential measures how strongly a half cell attracts electrons. The more positive the value, the greater the tendency to be reduced and the stronger the oxidising power. To decide whether a redox reaction is feasible, place the more positive half equation in the reduction direction as the positive electrode and the more negative one in the oxidation direction as the negative electrode, then subtract to obtain the cell potential. If the resulting potential is positive, the reaction is spontaneous under standard conditions. A crucial qualification is that the potential tells you about thermodynamic possibility, not about rate. A thermodynamically favourable reaction may be so slow on account of a high activation energy that no observable change occurs, and examiners frequently build a question around exactly this apparent contradiction.
A redox titration calculation follows four steps: work out the moles of the standard solution from its concentration and titre, use the balanced equation to find the mole ratio, convert to the moles of the unknown, and finally express the answer as a concentration or mass. If 24.0 cm3 of 0.0200 mol dm-3 manganate(VII) reacts with 25.0 cm3 of iron(II) solution, the moles of manganate(VII) are 0.0200 x 0.0240 = 4.80 x 10^-4 mol, so the moles of iron(II) are 2.40 x 10^-3 mol, giving a concentration of 0.0960 mol dm-3 after dividing by 0.0250 dm3. Always convert cm3 to dm3 before multiplying and always state units and sensible significant figures. Harder questions add dilution factors, multi step reaction sequences, or a percentage by mass conversion, but the chain of reasoning stays the same. Never skip steps or attempt to do the arithmetic mentally.
Five mistakes account for the largest share of lost marks. First, swapping the names of oxidising and reducing agents, so remember that the oxidising agent is itself reduced and the reducing agent is itself oxidised. Second, balancing mass but forgetting charge in a half equation, especially the coefficient in front of the electrons. Third, balancing in alkaline conditions with hydrogen ions instead of water and hydroxide ions, or failing to add equal hydroxide to both sides after an acidic balancing. Fourth, reversing the direction when comparing electrode potentials, when the more positive half must be written as the reduction. Fifth, leaving volumes in cm3 or omitting units in a titration answer. Adopt one fixed routine for every redox question: assign oxidation numbers, identify the roles, write and balance the half equations, combine them, and only then begin the arithmetic. That routine removes most of the cases where a student understands the chemistry but still drops marks.
Paper 3 and context style questions love to place redox inside a real scenario. The classic first example is the rusting of steel and sacrificial protection: zinc blocks are bolted to ships and buried pipelines, and because zinc has a more negative electrode potential than iron it is oxidised preferentially while the iron is protected. The second is the hydrogen oxygen fuel cell, where oxidation and reduction are separated at two electrodes so electrons can only travel through the external circuit, which is how electrical energy is extracted. The third is bleaching and disinfection, where hypochlorite ions destroy the structure of microorganisms by strong oxidation. The fourth is the electron transport chain in respiration and in photosynthesis, where living organisms release energy in controlled steps through a sequence of redox reactions. In the exam, state clearly which species loses electrons, which gains them, and which potential is more negative. That structure earns the full explanation marks, whereas a vague claim that redox happened earns almost nothing.
