Moving from KS2 into KS3, letters suddenly appear everywhere in the maths book: x, y, n, a. Many students are puzzled the first time they meet algebra. They could calculate perfectly well before, so why replace numbers with letters now? This article starts from the essential difference between arithmetic and algebra, then unpacks three core ideas: expressions, variables and equations. It ends with practical methods students can use immediately, so the KS3 transition becomes a genuine upgrade in thinking rather than a source of confusion.

In KS2, almost all of mathematics deals with specific numbers: 7 plus 5 equals 12, and 24 divided by 6 equals 4. Every question has one definite answer, and the task is simply to compute it. Once students enter KS3, the language changes fundamentally and letters start to appear. The difficulty they feel is usually not weaker arithmetic, but a shift in the object of thought: from producing a number to expressing a relationship.

Arithmetic asks what the result is; algebra asks how that result depends on other quantities. A workbook costs 12 yuan, so three copies cost 36 yuan. That is arithmetic. If the question becomes how much n copies cost, the answer is 12n. We have not calculated a fixed number; we have written a rule that gives the total immediately for any positive whole number n. This is the real power of algebra: one expression describes an entire family of cases instead of solving a single problem.

Letters in algebra are not vague labels. They play three quite different roles, and mixing them up causes most early mistakes.

First, a letter can be a variable, standing for a quantity that takes different values. A person's age a changes over time; the side length s of a square can be any positive number. Second, a letter can represent a constant, a value fixed within one problem, such as the unit price 12 above, which is usually written as a number rather than a letter. Third, a letter can be an unknown, a value we do not yet know but which the conditions of the problem determine, such as x in the equation 3x plus 5 equals 20, where the equality forces x to be 5.

Telling these roles apart matters. When a student asks what n equals in 12n, the honest answer is that it equals nothing fixed: it may be 1, 2, 3 or 100, because the expression describes a rule rather than a result. An unknown in an equation, by contrast, must be found and is usually unique. Recognising which kind of letter you are facing tells you what the question is actually asking.

Expressions follow a compact set of notational rules that KS3 students need to master, because weak notation causes endless errors later when solving equations.

When a number multiplies a letter, the multiplication sign is dropped and the number goes first: 3 times a is written 3a, never a3. One times a is just a, since a coefficient of 1 is not written. A negative sign stays with the number, so negative 5 times x becomes -5x. Division is normally written as a fraction: a divided by 4 becomes a/4, because the division sign in algebra is easily confused with a minus sign. Like terms can be collected: 2x plus 3x equals 5x. Unlike terms cannot: 2x plus 3y stays as it is, because x and y measure different quantities.

Here is a complete example. A rectangle is 3 cm longer than it is wide. Let the width be w cm, so the length is w plus 3 cm. The perimeter is 2 times (w plus w plus 3), which simplifies to 4w plus 6, and the area is w times (w plus 3). If the width is 5 cm, substitute w equals 5: the perimeter is 26 cm and the area is 40 square cm. Writing the general expression with letters first and substituting numbers second is the most reliable route through KS3 word problems.

An equation is a statement with an equals sign asserting that two sides have the same value. Solving it means preserving that equality while isolating the unknown on one side. The clearest mental model is a balance: as long as you do the same thing to both sides, the balance is kept.

Use that model on 3x plus 5 equals 20. First, subtract 5 from both sides to get 3x equals 15. Second, divide both sides by 3 to get x equals 5. Every step keeps the balance, and the answer is unique. Check by substituting back: 3 times 5 plus 5 equals 20, which is correct.

The phrase moving a term to the other side is easily misunderstood. Students often learn that 5 becomes negative 5 when it crosses the equals sign, but the safer description is that we subtract 5 from both sides. The first is a slogan, the second is a reason. The slogan breaks down with fractional coefficients, brackets and negatives, while the balance principle never does. Later in KS3 both sides may contain the unknown: 5x minus 2 equals 3x plus 8. Subtract 3x from both sides and add 2 to both sides, and you get 2x equals 10, so x equals 5, exactly the same reasoning.

Five high-frequency mistakes appear again and again, and each has a simple countermeasure.

The first is reading 3x as 3 plus x. It means 3 times x. When x is 4, the two are 12 and 7. Countermeasure: every time you see a coefficient, read the word times silently.

The second is combining unlike terms, writing 2x plus 3y as 5xy. Terms with different letters or different powers cannot be combined; leave them as they are.

The third is mishandling a negative sign, treating the square of negative 2 as negative 4. It is positive 4, because two negatives multiplied give a positive.

The fourth is forgetting brackets when substituting. If the expression is 2x plus 1 and x is negative 3, writing it out directly is fairly safe, but for x squared, substituting without brackets can flip the sign of the answer. The reliable habit is to insert brackets first, then substitute.

The fifth is failing to check the solution. Substituting the answer back into the original equation takes ten seconds and catches the great majority of careless errors, which makes it one of the best value habits in an exam.

Fluent algebra comes from deliberate practice, not from sheer volume. A three-stage plan works well. Stage one: spend one week on simplifying expressions only, ten questions a day, concentrating on notation and recognising like terms. Stage two: spend two weeks on linear equations, moving from the simplest forms with a single term on each side to equations with brackets and fractional coefficients, eight questions a day, checking every answer. Stage three: apply equations to word problems about ages, prices, perimeters and areas, three or four questions a day, focusing on translating words into expressions.

Notation deserves separate emphasis. Many students lose marks on word problems not because they cannot solve, but because the equation is set up wrongly. A practical habit is to write the relationship in words first, for example total price equals unit price times quantity, and only then replace each quantity with a letter. Making the translation visible sharply reduces errors.

Finally, fix your checking order. First look for like terms to collect, then for brackets to expand, then for which side the unknown is on, and only then start calculating. This order avoids large amounts of wasted work and makes exam timing much more comfortable. Once the KS3 foundations are solid, GCSE and A-Level topics such as functions, graphs and sequences become far easier, because they all rest on the same small set of algebraic skills.
