UK boarding schools are one of the most sought-after secondary education options for families worldwide. There are around 500 boarding schools in Britain, from centuries-old public schools to prep schools for ages 8 to 13. The system is well structured but its terminology is confusing, and many families go in the wrong direction at the very first step. This guide compares public schools with independent schools, explains the three boarding models, walks through the 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry points, contrasts A-Level with the IB, and breaks down fee structures and scholarships, so that choosing a school becomes a question of fit rather than league-table position.
Public Schools vs Independent Schools
Many families read public school as a state school, which is the most common misunderstanding. In British usage a Public School is a fee-charging independent school, and specifically one of the oldest and most selective, usually the nine Clarendon schools such as Eton, Harrow and Winchester. They were defined by the Public Schools Act of 1868 and sit inside the wider category of independent schools. Independent school covers any school funded by fees and endowments rather than the state; there are about 2,400 in the UK, of which roughly 500 offer boarding. A third category, state-funded grammar schools, charges no fees but rarely provides boarding and is generally not open to international pupils. The first step in choosing a school is therefore not the league table but the school's legal and funding status, because that determines the application route, the fee level and the visa requirements. The category also shapes how much scholarship funding is available, whether guardianship is needed, and how competitive the places are.
Boarding Types: Full, Weekly and Flexi
UK boarding comes in three models and the choice directly affects the pupil's experience. Full boarding means the pupil lives at school for the whole term including weekends, with organised weekend activities and trips; almost all international pupils choose this. Weekly boarding means living at school Monday to Friday and going home at weekends, which mainly serves local families. Flexi boarding is charged by the night and lets parents book a set number of nights as needed, useful as a short-term arrangement or a trial. Fees differ sharply: full boarding costs roughly 35,000 to 50,000 pounds a year, weekly boarding is usually 10 to 20 per cent lower, and flexi is priced per night. A second key indicator is the boarding ratio. Schools with a high proportion of boarders run fuller weekend programmes, supervised evening prep and a stronger housemaster or housemistress system. Where boarders are a small minority, the campus can be quiet at weekends. For international pupils, a boarding ratio below 20 per cent deserves caution, because both the language environment and the stability of peer culture weaken noticeably.
Entry Points and Timelines
There are three main entry points, each with a completely different exam and preparation cycle. 11+ is the entry to prep schools, for pupils aged about 10 to 11. It tests English, maths and reasoning, and top prep schools add an interview. 13+ is the most common entry to public and independent schools, for pupils aged about 12 to 13, and it has the longest pipeline: registration usually happens two years ahead, followed by the ISEB Pre-Test, a computer-based assessment covering English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, then the school's own entrance exam and interview. Schools such as Eton and Harrow still use Common Entrance or their own papers. 16+ is the sixth-form entry, for pupils aged about 15 to 16, going straight into A-Level or IB. It tests subject depth, typically two to four relevant subjects plus an interview, and far fewer places are available than at 13+. A practical timeline: start 13+ registration two to three years ahead, and 16+ one to two years ahead. Missing a registration deadline usually means waiting for the next cycle, and waiting lists at popular schools are long, so a year's delay can mean missing an entire course cycle.
IB / A-Level versus the IB
At 16+ the real choice is the curriculum. A-Level usually means three subjects, with some pupils taking four, and it prioritises depth, which suits pupils with a clear academic direction; for UK university medicine, engineering or mathematics, an A-Level combination is the most direct route. The IB Diploma requires six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus three core elements: the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, Service. It prioritises breadth and suits pupils who are undecided or planning to apply to the United States. Grading differs too: A-Level runs from A* to E, while the IB is marked out of 45, with a global average around 30 and selective universities typically asking for 38 to 42. A practical test: if a pupil knows the subject direction at 16 and is happy to drop weaker subjects, choose A-Level; if they want to keep several subjects open and are strong at writing and interdisciplinary work, choose the IB. Note that not every boarding school offers both, so check the curriculum before weighing anything else, or a target school may turn out unable to support the intended degree.
Fee Structure and Hidden Costs
Boarding fees are only part of the total cost. For the 2025 to 2026 academic year, full boarding runs at roughly 35,000 to 50,000 pounds a year, with public schools and schools near London at the top of that range. Common extras beyond tuition include a registration fee of about 100 to 400 pounds which is non-refundable, a deposit usually equal to one term's fees which is refundable, uniform and sports kit at 500 to 1,500 pounds, guardianship as a legal requirement for international pupils at about 2,000 to 4,000 pounds a year, plus flights, visas and specialist tuition such as music or equestrianism. In addition, VAT at 20 per cent now applies to private school fees in the UK; most schools have passed the cost on, producing real increases of around 10 to 20 per cent, so budgets must be based on the new prices rather than last year's figures. On funding, academic scholarships usually reduce fees by 5 to 20 per cent, as do music, sport and art awards. Bursaries are means-tested and can cover up to 100 per cent, but are normally open only to UK-domiciled families. International pupils can mainly target academic and talent scholarships, applied for alongside the entry application and requiring an extra exam or portfolio.
A Six-Point Checklist for School Visits
League tables reflect exam results, not fit. Use a six-point checklist when visiting. First, look at the composition of results rather than the average, focusing on the A* to A proportion and on value-added measures, which track how much progress the school adds. Second, examine destinations, including the share going to Russell Group universities and to Oxford or Cambridge, and whether overseas applications are well supported. Third, assess pastoral care: the housemaster-to-pupil ratio, medical and counselling provision, and how many hours of English as an additional language support are timetabled. Fourth, look at weekend provision for boarders and ask whether the school has a genuine full-boarding culture or empties out at weekends. Fifth, check the international mix; if one nationality dominates, the English-speaking environment is diluted. Sixth, understand the policy on withdrawal or transfer, and the channel for raising problems if a pupil is unhappy. During visits, ask to speak with current pupils and housemasters separately rather than relying on the admissions presentation, because everyday details from pupils usually reveal more about a school than any prospectus.
Practical Selection Advice
Treating school choice as a matching problem rather than a ranking problem saves a great deal of wasted effort. Three practical principles. First, fix the framework before the school: decide the affordable fee band and the curriculum, A-Level or IB, then eliminate schools that do not fit, which typically cuts a candidate list from twenty to eight. Second, work backwards from the calendar: start 13+ preparation in Year 4 and 16+ preparation in Year 10, and remember that registration deadlines usually fall more than a year before the exams, so lock the timeline before locking the school. Third, put visits at the centre of the decision. Visit at least three schools, ideally on a normal weekday, to see classes and boarding life as they really are rather than as they are staged on an open day. One final point: language and independence determine the boarding experience more than any ranking does. A year of English reinforcement and independent-living practice before entry is usually worth more than several extra sets of entrance papers.
