一、Year 12 春季：确定专业方向，而不是确定大学

Most students reverse the order: they pick a university first and back-fill a course. Do it the other way round. Lock two or three subject directions, then check which universities actually teach them well. Three concrete actions: read the module lists for your shortlisted courses at five universities and ask whether you would genuinely enjoy the compulsory Year 2 and Year 3 modules; check the hard A-Level subject requirements, since economics usually needs mathematics, engineering needs mathematics plus physics, and medicine needs chemistry; record the acceptance ratio and typical offer for each course, and delete the options that sit far above your realistic range.
二、Year 12 夏季：超级课外与素材积累
个人陈述的 4000 字符（约 500 英文单词）里，真正有价值的不是形容词，而是可验证的经历。夏季是唯一一段可以自由支配的完整时间，建议集中做一到两个深度项目：阅读本专业的两本入门教材并写下三百字以上的读书笔记、完成一门在线课程并保留证书编号、参加一次与专业相关的实习或志愿活动、把 EPQ 或科研项目做出可展示的成果。注意广度不如深度：四段浅尝辄止的经历，不如一段能讲清楚方法、困难与结论的经历。
The 4000 characters of your personal statement reward verifiable experience, not adjectives. Summer is the only long stretch you control completely, so use it for one or two deep projects: read two introductory textbooks in your subject and write notes of 300 words or more, finish an online course and keep the certificate reference, take one internship or volunteering role connected to the subject, or push an EPQ or research project to a demonstrable result. Depth beats breadth. Four shallow activities are worth less than one you can explain in terms of method, difficulty and conclusion.
三、Year 12 暑假：个人陈述初稿与推荐信沟通
暑假结束前完成两件事。第一，写出个人陈述的第一版完整初稿，重点是结构与证据，不必纠结措辞。推荐的段落结构是：为什么选这个专业（学术动机，占约三成）、你为此做了什么（阅读、项目、实习、竞赛，占约五成）、这些经历如何让你更适合这门课（反思与匹配度，占约两成）。第二，正式向一位学科老师提出写推荐信（reference）的请求，并附上一份材料清单：你的选课、成绩预测、参加过的竞赛与项目、申请的五个志愿。老师没有这些信息，写出来的推荐信会非常空泛。
Finish two things before the summer ends. First, write a full first draft of the personal statement, focusing on structure and evidence rather than wording. A reliable structure is: why this subject, roughly thirty per cent; what you have done about it through reading, projects, work experience and competitions, roughly fifty per cent; and how those experiences make you suited to the course, roughly twenty per cent. Second, formally ask a subject teacher for a reference and hand over a fact sheet: your options, predicted grades, competitions and projects, and the five choices you intend to make. Without that information the reference will read as generic filler.
四、Year 13 九月：开通账户与最终选校

The new UCAS cycle normally opens in September. You register, complete personal details, education history, predicted grades, up to five choices (four only for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science), and the personal statement. A healthy mix is two ambitious choices whose typical offers sit one grade above your predictions, two well-matched choices, and one safety choice that you would still be happy to attend. Oxford and Cambridge are mutually exclusive and share the early deadline with medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. Before you submit, ask your school UCAS coordinator to check spelling of names, subject titles, exam board and predicted grades against school records, because corrections after submission are slow and sometimes impossible.
五、十月中旬：牛剑与医学类截止

The first major deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses falls around 15 October; always confirm the exact date on the UCAS site for your cycle. Three things cannot slip. Your application, including the personal statement and the reference, must be submitted before it. Admissions tests such as the TMUA, ESAT, LNAT and UCAT are booked and sat around this window, so plan two months ahead. Some courses also require written work, usually due at the same time. Missing this date does not mean a lower offer; it means your application is never read for that course that year.
六、一月中旬：绝大多数专业的同等考虑截止

The equal consideration deadline for all other courses normally falls in mid-January and is the single most important date of the year. Applications submitted before it are read on equal terms; later applications are only considered if places remain. International applicants should check two extra points: whether an English test score must be submitted by then, since requirements differ by university, and whether the university sets an earlier deadline for international applicants. Aim to submit two weeks early so that system congestion, payment failures or missing documents do not cost you the cycle.
七、二月到五月：Extra 与录取决定
如果五个志愿全部被拒或全部撤回，可以在二月底前后进入 Extra，一次添加一个志愿，直到七月。收到 offer 后，需要在五月前后做出 Firm（第一志愿）与 Insurance（保底志愿）的选择。这里有一个常见的误判：Insurance 的作用是在成绩未达 Firm 要求时保住位置，所以它必须是你有信心达到、并且真心愿意去的学校，而不是随便填一所低分学校。选择时还要核对 offer 的具体条件：是要求总分，还是要求特定科目达到某个等级，两者对复习策略的影响完全不同。
If all five choices are rejected or withdrawn, Extra opens around late February and lets you add one choice at a time until July. Once offers arrive, you normally confirm a Firm choice and an Insurance choice in May. A frequent misjudgement: the Insurance place exists to protect you if you miss the Firm conditions, so it must be a course you are confident of reaching and genuinely want to attend, not a random low-tariff back-up. Read the exact conditions of each offer too, since a total-points condition and a subject-specific grade condition require completely different revision strategies.
八、放榜与 Clearing：最后一道保险
A-Level 放榜通常在八月中旬。成绩达到 Firm 条件则位置确认；未达到 Firm 但达到 Insurance 条件，则进入 Insurance 学校；两者都未达到，可以进入 Clearing（补录），在放榜当天到九月之间重新选择仍有空位的专业。Clearing 阶段最有效的准备是提前列好一份名单：把仍然接受申请的相近专业整理出来，写清楚课程代码、入学要求与联系电话，放榜当天上午直接致电。Clearing 不是失败者的通道，每年都有相当数量的学生通过它进入比自己原计划更合适的课程。
A-Level results are released in mid-August. Meet your Firm conditions and your place is confirmed; miss the Firm but meet the Insurance conditions and you go to the Insurance choice; miss both and you enter Clearing, where you can choose again between results day and September. The most effective preparation is a shortlist made in advance: neighbouring courses still open, with course codes, entry requirements and phone numbers, ready to call on the morning of results day. Clearing is not a channel for failures; every year a substantial number of students find a course there that suits them better than their original plan.
九、时间线自检清单
提交前逐项核对：一，五个志愿是否覆盖冲刺、匹配、保底三档，且每一所你都愿意去；二，UCAS 上的科目名称、考试局与预测成绩是否与学校记录一致；三，个人陈述是否以学术动机开头，而不是以童年故事开头；四，是否至少有两段可以被追问细节的经历（读过什么书、做过什么项目、得出什么结论）；五，推荐信老师是否拿到你的材料清单；六，所有截止日期是否已写进日历并设置两次提醒（提前两周与提前三天）；七，英语成绩与资金证明的时间是否与学校要求匹配。
Before you submit, check each item. Do your five choices cover ambitious, matched and safety levels, and would you happily attend any of them? Do the subject titles, exam board and predicted grades match school records exactly? Does the personal statement open with academic motivation rather than a childhood story? Do you have at least two experiences a tutor could interrogate in detail, meaning what you read, what you did and what you concluded? Has the referee received your fact sheet? Is every deadline in your calendar with two reminders, one two weeks ahead and one three days ahead? Do your English test and financial documents fit the university's own timetable?
十、最常见的五个失误
第一，把个人陈述写成活动清单，只写做了什么，不写学到了什么，招生官看不到学术思考。第二，五个志愿全部冲高，没有保底，一旦成绩波动就只剩 Clearing。第三，推荐信请求提太晚，老师只有一周时间，写出来的内容无法支撑你的申请。第四，忽略入学考试报名时间，等意识到时报名已经关闭。第五，语言成绩压到最后提交，遇到成绩未达线时已经没有重考机会。这五个失误共同的特征是把可提前完成的动作拖到了不可挽回的截止日之后。
Five mistakes show up again and again. Turning the personal statement into a list of activities without saying what you learned, which leaves no evidence of academic thinking. Choosing five ambitious options with no safety choice, so a single disappointing result leaves only Clearing. Asking for the reference too late, giving the teacher a week and receiving a paragraph that cannot support the application. Ignoring admissions test registration windows until they close. And leaving the English test to the last moment, when a missed score can no longer be retaken in time. All five share one shape: an action that could have been finished early is pushed past an irreversible date.
