个人陈述 PS写作 文书结构 素材 修改技巧
个人陈述是申请材料里唯一一段完全由你掌控的英文。成绩单由考试局决定,推荐信由老师执笔,只有个人陈述是你自己的声音。这篇文章把个人陈述拆成四个可以练习的动作: 定位、搭骨架、找证据、改到干净。每一节都给出中英对照的写法与常见失分点,适合 A-Level、IB 和 GCSE 阶段开始准备申请的学生。
The personal statement is the only part of your application written entirely by you. Grades come from the exam board, references come from your teachers, but this page is your own voice. This guide breaks the task into four trainable actions: positioning, structuring, evidencing, and editing. Each section gives bilingual examples plus the mistakes that cost applicants the most, and it works whether you are at GCSE, A-Level or IB stage.
Most admissions tutors spend two or three minutes on a personal statement, and they are not looking for beautiful sentences. They are answering three questions: is your interest sustained or improvised, have you reached beyond the classroom to find evidence, and can you explain something complicated clearly. That is why the sensible order is one sentence naming the problem you care about, two or three paragraphs of concrete evidence, and a closing paragraph on what you want to investigate next at university.
把这三个问题写下来贴在桌边,每写完一段就问自己: 这一段回答的是哪一个问题。如果一段话既不能证明兴趣持续,也没有提供证据,只是在说"我从小热爱这门学科",那么它应该被删掉,而不是被润色。
Write the three questions on a card and interrogate every paragraph against them. If a paragraph neither shows sustained interest nor supplies evidence, and merely claims that you have loved the subject since childhood, delete it instead of polishing it.
不同学科看重的证据类型并不相同。经济与管理类看重你能否把现实事件与模型对上,例如用价格弹性解释某次票价调整为何失败。医学与生物类看重持续照顾他人或长期实验室记录的证据。工程与计算机类看重你已经把想法做出来的痕迹,哪怕只是一个能运行的小工具。写作之前先确认你的学科属于哪一类,把证据集中投放在最相关的位置,而不是平均分配篇幅。
Different subjects reward different kinds of evidence. Economics and management want proof that you can attach a real event to a model, for example using price elasticity to explain why a fare increase failed. Medicine and biology look for sustained care for others or a long laboratory record. Engineering and computing look for a trail of things you actually built, even a small working tool. Decide which category your subject belongs to before writing, then concentrate evidence where it matters instead of spreading it evenly.
For a statement of roughly 4,000 characters, a safe split is a 400 character opening, two subject paragraphs of about 900 characters each, a 700 character paragraph on wider activities, and a 400 character close, with the remainder used for linking sentences. Avoid proverbs and famous quotations in the opening and walk straight into a specific academic moment, such as the laboratory result that refused to match the theory or the paper that changed your mind. Each body paragraph should run the same three step loop: claim, evidence, reflection.
段落之间需要显式的逻辑连接。第二段的开头可以承接第一段留下的问题,例如在谈完实验误差之后,下一段谈你如何通过统计课程学会判断数据可信度。招生官读到"因为上一个问题没有解决,所以我去读了什么"这种叙述时,会认为你的兴趣是有方向感的。
Paragraphs need explicit links. If the first subject paragraph ends with an unresolved problem about experimental error, open the next with the statistics course or book you turned to in order to judge whether data can be trusted. Tutors read that chain of because and therefore as evidence that your curiosity has direction rather than drift.
开头段可以用一组对比来检验。弱的版本是"从小我就对数字着迷,数学让我看到世界的美"。强的版本是"在推导 Logistic 模型的解时,我发现课堂给出的近似在小种群下完全失效,这让我去查了原始论文,也第一次意识到模型有适用边界"。前一句任何人都能写,后一句只可能由你写。判断标准很简单: 如果这句话换成另一个申请人也成立,它就没有信息量。
Test your opening with a substitution check. The weak version claims that you have been fascinated by numbers since childhood and that mathematics reveals the beauty of the world. The strong version reports finding that the classroom approximation to the logistic model collapses for small populations, which sent you to the original paper and taught you that models have boundaries. Anyone could write the first; only you could write the second. If a sentence would survive a change of author, it carries no information.
三 素材挖掘: 把经历变成证据
证据不等于头衔。参加过竞赛、做过课题、在实验室待过一周,这些都只是材料,不是证据。证据是你在其中做了什么判断。把每一段经历写成三行: 情境、你的动作、得出的结论。例如"在做二氧化锰催化实验时,我三次得到不同的活化能,于是我记录温度控制误差并改用冰浴,第三次数据的偏差降到百分之五"。这种写法比"我参加了化学实验项目"有说服力得多。
Evidence is not a title. Entering a competition, completing a project, or spending a week in a laboratory is raw material, not evidence. Evidence is the judgement you made inside it. Write every experience in three lines: the situation, your action, the conclusion you drew. Compare the vague claim of having taken part in a chemistry project with the sharper account of obtaining three different activation energies, tracing the error to temperature control, switching to an ice bath, and cutting the spread to five per cent.
阅读类的素材也要落到具体文本。不要只写"我读过经济学书籍",而是写清楚作者的一个论点如何与你在课堂上学的模型冲突,你又如何判断哪一边更站得住。对于数学、物理、计算机这类学科,一个自己做的小项目往往比十个奖项有用,因为项目能展示你独立定义问题、遇到错误、再修正的完整过程。
Reading works the same way: name the specific argument, not the general topic. Instead of claiming that you read widely in economics, describe how one author's conclusion clashed with the model taught in class and how you decided which side held up. In mathematics, physics or computer science, one self-directed project usually beats ten prizes, because a project shows you defining a problem, failing, and correcting yourself.
四 语言: 具体、克制、有主语
英文写作里最常见的失分点是形容词过多而动词过少。把"我非常热爱并且深深着迷于物理"改成"我用周末时间推导了单摆的周期公式,并验证了它在大角度下失效"。前者是情绪声明,后者是可检验的事实。同时要控制句长,一句英文超过三十个词,读者就需要回头重读,而重读等于扣分。
Too many adjectives and too few verbs sink more English sentences than grammar errors do. Replace the declaration that you are deeply fascinated by physics with the record of a weekend spent deriving the pendulum period and testing where it breaks down at large angles. The first is a feeling, the second is checkable. Control sentence length as well: an English sentence longer than about thirty words forces the reader to backtrack, and backtracking costs you marks.
语气方面保持平实。不要夸张成"这将是我人生最重要的转折点",也不需要谦虚到把成绩全部归功于老师。使用第一人称主动语态,让每个段落都有一个明确的施动者。写完一段后朗读出来,如果读起来像宣传册,就重写。
Keep the tone plain. Do not inflate a summer course into the single most important turning point of your life, and do not hand all credit to your teachers. Use the active first person so every paragraph has a clear agent, then read your draft aloud; if it sounds like a brochure, rewrite it.
五 常见失分点清单
第一类是套话开局,例如引用名人名言或描述童年梦想。第二类是罗列活动,把简历改写成散文,读者拿不到任何细节。第三类是重复申请表中已有的信息,比如把 A-Level 科目和预估成绩再写一遍。第四类是宣称式结论,"我天生适合这个专业"没有证据支撑。第五类是把篇幅浪费在与专业无关的经历上,除非它能解释一个可迁移的能力。
The recurring failures are easy to list. First, stock openings built on famous quotations or childhood dreams. Second, an activity inventory that turns a CV into prose and gives the reader no detail. Third, repetition of information already in the application form, such as listing your A-Level subjects and predicted grades again. Fourth, unsupported declarations that you are naturally suited to the course. Fifth, spending space on experiences unrelated to the subject unless they demonstrate a transferable skill.
还有一个容易被忽略的问题是字符数超限。UCAS 的限制是 4000 字符含空格,同时不超过 47 行。很多学生写到 4500 字符才开始删减,最后删掉的是最有力的证据。正确做法是先写 4500 字符的完整版本,然后按"最弱的句子优先删除"的顺序压回 4000,而不是逐句缩短。
One overlooked constraint is the character limit. The UCAS statement allows 4,000 characters including spaces and no more than 47 lines. Students who only start cutting at 4,500 characters usually end up deleting their strongest evidence. Write the full 4,500 character version first, then compress by removing the weakest sentences entirely rather than shortening every sentence by a few words.
六 修改流程与时间规划
把修改拆成四轮,每一轮只盯一个问题。第一轮看结构,确认段落顺序符合"问题、证据、延伸";第二轮看证据,把每个抽象形容词换成一个具体动作或数据;第三轮看语言,删掉被动语态、重复词和过长句;第四轮只做校对,处理拼写、标点和时态一致。四轮分开做的原因是,同时修正结构和拼写会让人反复重写句子,效率很低。
Split revision into four passes, each watching a single thing. Pass one checks structure and confirms the order of problem, evidence and extension. Pass two upgrades evidence, swapping every abstract adjective for a concrete action or number. Pass three cleans language, cutting passive voice, repeated words and overlong sentences. Pass four is proofreading only: spelling, punctuation and consistent tense. Doing these simultaneously makes you rewrite the same sentence again and again.
时间上建议留出六周。第一周收集素材并写出一份粗糙的完整稿,第二周完成结构重排,第三周补充证据,第四周请一位了解你学科的老师或学长阅读并给出三个具体问题,第五周按照反馈重写薄弱段落,第六周只做通读与校对,不再加新内容。最后七天不要大改,因为临考前的紧张会让你把清楚的句子改成更复杂的句子。
Six weeks is a realistic schedule. Week one gathers material and produces a rough full draft, week two reorders the structure, week three strengthens evidence, week four hands the draft to a subject teacher or an older student who returns three specific questions, week five rewrites the weak paragraphs, and week six is reading and proofreading only. Do not add new content in the final week; exam nerves push students to replace clear sentences with complicated ones.
写完之后请一位不熟悉你学科的人读一遍。如果对方能说出你关心什么问题、你用什么证据支持它,这份陈述就通过了第一道关卡。如果他们只能重复你的活动名称,说明证据还不够具体,需要回到第三节重新挖掘素材。
Finish by asking someone outside your subject to read the draft. If they can state what problem you care about and what evidence supports it, the statement has passed its first test. If they can only repeat the names of your activities, the evidence is still too thin and you should return to the third section and dig again.
