In AQA GCSE Economics, Paper 1 is built around how markets work, and the Markets unit carries most of the foundational marks. Demand and supply, equilibrium price, elasticity, and market failure appear constantly in short-answer questions and form the backbone of the 9-mark evaluation tasks. Most students can recall the definitions but fail to write the chain of reasoning the examiner rewards.

This guide organises the unit into nine practical modules. Each one gives you the core conclusion, the exact exam language, a worked calculation, and the mistakes that cost marks. Use it as a one-page revision checklist and annotate past papers as you read, so scattered notes turn into a stable scoring structure.

Scarcity is the foundation of economics: resources are limited while wants are unlimited, so every choice involves giving something up. Distinguish clearly between needs and wants, and name all four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Enterprise is the one students forget, yet it is the factor that organises the other three and bears risk.

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone, not the money actually spent. If you spend a Saturday tutoring for 120 yuan instead of revising, the opportunity cost is the best alternative you gave up. Always state the definition first, then identify the specific alternative in the scenario, otherwise you lose the application mark.

这里的关键区分是 movement along the curve(价格变动引起的移动)和 shift of the curve(价格以外的因素引起的整条曲线平移)。

The law of demand states that, other things being equal, as price rises the quantity demanded falls, and as price falls the quantity demanded rises. The crucial skill is separating a movement along the curve, caused by price, from a shift of the whole curve, caused by anything other than price. Confusing the two is one of the most common mark-losing errors at GCSE.

Demand shifts to the right when disposable income rises for normal goods, when the price of a substitute rises, when a complement becomes cheaper, when tastes change, when the population grows, or when consumers expect future price rises. Remember the exception: for inferior goods, demand falls as income rises, and stating that exception earns credit.

The supply curve slopes upwards because higher prices make producers more willing to commit resources: existing firms expand output and new firms are attracted by profit. As with demand, price causes movement along the curve, while all other factors shift the curve itself.

Supply shifts right when production costs fall, such as cheaper raw materials, wages or energy; when technology raises productivity; when the government grants a subsidy or cuts a tax; when new firms enter; or when weather and seasonal conditions improve, especially in agriculture. Always state the direction explicitly: supply shifts from S1 to S2, so equilibrium price falls and equilibrium quantity rises. If the direction is wrong, the analysis earns nothing.

Equilibrium price occurs where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. Above equilibrium there is a surplus, so sellers cut prices to clear stock; below equilibrium there is a shortage, so buyers bid prices up. This self-correcting process is the price mechanism working through three functions: signalling, incentive and rationing.

For a four-mark question, use a fixed structure: identify the initial disequilibrium, state the direction of the price signal, explain how buyers and sellers react, then state the new equilibrium. These four steps map onto four marks. If the question provides a table, quote the numbers: at a price of 5 yuan, supply is 300 units and demand is 150 units, producing a surplus of 150 units.

Price elasticity of demand measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a price change. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. A value greater than 1 in absolute terms means elastic demand; less than 1 means inelastic demand. When demand is elastic, cutting price raises total revenue; when it is inelastic, raising price raises total revenue.

Worked example: price rises from 10 to 11 yuan and quantity demanded falls from 200 to 160 units. The price change is 10 per cent and the quantity change is 20 per cent, so PED is 2, which is elastic, and total revenue falls from 2000 to 1760 yuan. Show the calculation, keep the sign convention consistent, and always state the direction of the revenue change.

Income elasticity of demand measures how quantity demanded responds to a change in income, calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in income. A positive value indicates a normal good; above 1 it is a luxury, between 0 and 1 it is a necessity. A negative value indicates an inferior good.

The measure is directly useful for business decisions. If a firm sells luxuries, demand will fall proportionally more than income during a recession, so stock and pricing plans need adjusting early. In evaluation questions, combine income and price elasticity: a product with high income elasticity but low price elasticity is more exposed to a downturn. This cross-analysis is what pushes an answer into the top band.

The degree of competition depends on the number of firms, product differentiation, barriers to entry and pricing power. In a highly competitive market firms are price takers, while a monopoly or tight oligopoly enjoys price-setting power. Examiners reward an explanation of how competition affects consumers: lower prices, better quality, faster innovation and wider choice.

Concentrated market power creates risks: firms can raise prices, restrict output, reduce choice, or collude. Avoid simply writing that monopoly is bad. Build the chain instead: high concentration, high barriers to entry and few substitutes make demand inelastic, which gives the firm room to raise price and reduces consumer surplus.

Market failure occurs when the price mechanism allocates resources inefficiently. Three cases dominate the AQA specification: negative externalities, where social cost exceeds private cost, such as factory pollution; positive externalities, where social benefit exceeds private benefit, such as education; and public goods, which are non-rival and non-excludable, such as street lighting, so private firms will not supply them.

Information failure is also examinable, for example when consumers underestimate the long-term risks of smoking or high-sugar food. On a diagram, shade the gap between social and private cost and state that the socially optimal output is below the market output. Writing that pollution is harmful earns nothing; the mechanism, that an ignored cost falls on third parties, is where the marks sit.

Common intervention tools include indirect taxes on negative externalities, which raise private cost; subsidies for positive externalities and merit goods; laws and regulations such as plastic bans or minimum smoking ages; education and information campaigns; and direct provision of public goods. For each tool, be ready to give one strength and one weakness. A tax reduces output but can push up prices and hit low-income groups; a subsidy raises consumption but increases the fiscal burden.

For the 9-mark evaluation question, use a stable structure: one argument on each side with data or context, an explicit judgement about which is stronger, then a qualified conclusion such as: in the short run a tax is most effective because demand is inelastic, but in the long run education is needed to change preferences. Always take a position, and support it with one clear condition.

Revision tip: map these nine modules onto the last five years of Paper 1 questions. Whenever a diagram is involved, decide first whether it is a shift or a movement. Whenever evaluation is required, commit to a position before adding evidence. Timed practice with past papers beats rereading definitions every time.
