Edexcel IGCSE

Edexcel IGCSE Economics (4EC1) looks easier than physics or chemistry, but the A* rate is far lower than most students expect. The gap is almost never content knowledge. It is exam technique: knowing what the mark scheme rewards, how to label a diagram, and how to write an evaluation that actually earns the final marks. This guide covers the three highest-weight modules, demand and supply, elasticity, and market failure, then gives you an eight week revision plan you can follow directly.

Both papers are worth 50 percent. Paper 1 covers microeconomics and the individual economy; Paper 2 covers macroeconomics and the global economy. Questions fall into four groups: multiple choice, definitions and short answers, diagram-based explanation, and extended writing with evaluation. The higher the mark allocation, the more the examiner rewards structure rather than volume. A four mark question wants two separate points, each with one sentence of explanation. A six mark question wants a cause, a consequence, and a concrete example. A nine mark question must contain both sides plus your own supported judgement. Writing two hundred words on one side of a nine mark question caps you at roughly half marks, because evaluation is marked separately.

The starting point of all economics is scarcity: unlimited wants against limited resources. Choice is therefore unavoidable, and every choice carries an opportunity cost, which is the value of the next best alternative forgone. Definitions in the exam must include the phrase next best alternative, not simply the thing given up. A government spending one billion on new hospitals faces an opportunity cost measured in the schools or rail links that money could have funded. On a production possibility curve, a point on the curve means full and efficient use of resources, a point inside the curve means unemployed or inefficiently used resources, and an outward shift of the whole curve means economic growth. Being able to explain those three positions in one second each is worth easy marks every year.

This is the single most common source of lost marks at IGCSE. A change in price itself causes a movement along the demand or supply curve, which changes quantity demanded or supplied. A change in any other determinant shifts the whole curve, which changes demand or supply. Use PIRATES for demand shifters: population, income, related goods, advertising and tastes, expectations, and season. Supply shifters are costs of production, technology, taxes and subsidies, weather, and the number of producers. Answer in three steps: name the determinant that changed, state the direction in which the curve shifts, then state the effect on equilibrium price and quantity. Missing the third step costs a mark even when the diagram is perfect.

Elasticity is one of the few topics in IGCSE Economics where you must calculate a precise figure, and it is also where full marks are easiest. Price elasticity of demand equals the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. A value greater than one is elastic, less than one is inelastic, and exactly one is unitary. The revenue rule follows directly: when demand is elastic, cutting price raises total revenue; when demand is inelastic, raising price raises total revenue. Price elasticity of supply works the same way, and supply is normally inelastic in the short run because firms cannot instantly change factories or hire trained staff. Always show the sign and the value, then add one sentence of business meaning. If bus fares rise by ten percent and passengers fall by only one percent, demand is inelastic and the operator's revenue rises.

Market failure means the price mechanism fails to allocate resources efficiently. Its main forms are negative externalities, positive externalities, public goods, information failure, and monopoly power. A negative externality is a cost imposed on a third party that is not reflected in the price, such as pollution from a factory, so social cost exceeds private cost and output is too high. Positive externalities work in the opposite direction, as with vaccination or education, where social benefit exceeds private benefit and output is too low. Government responses include taxes, subsidies, regulation, education, and defining property rights. A reliable four step evaluation works like this: first, explain why the market fails; second, explain the mechanism by which the policy corrects it, for example a tax raises costs and reduces output; third, explain the limitations, such as higher prices, lost jobs, difficulty in setting the right tax level, or firms relocating to lighter regulation; fourth, give a conditional conclusion. That structure reliably earns seven or more of the nine marks.

Diagram questions in Edexcel follow a fixed mark scheme. Axes must be labelled and include Price and Quantity. Curves must be labelled D and S, or D1 and D2 when showing a shift. The new intersection must be marked as a new equilibrium point, and you must state the direction of change in both price and quantity. Draw in pencil first, then go over it. Three mistakes account for most lost marks: showing a shift as a movement along the curve, placing the new equilibrium point incorrectly, and forgetting the concluding sentence that names the change in price and quantity. A practical drill is to redraw every diagram question from the last five past papers three times, until you can complete the diagram and say the conclusion aloud within thirty seconds.

Weeks one and two: read the textbook and build definition cards. IGCSE Economics has roughly one hundred and twenty definitions you must be able to write from memory, so do ten per day in Chinese and English, because the exam rewards precise terminology. Weeks three and four: work through past papers topic by topic, but only the two and four mark questions, focusing on accurate terms and one explanatory sentence per point. Week five: drill diagram questions and calculations, including PED, PES, changes in total revenue, GDP, and inflation. Week six: specialise in six and nine mark questions, writing one per day and checking it against the mark scheme, highlighting in a different colour every point you missed. Week seven: complete two full papers under exam conditions. Week eight: revise only your mistake book and definition cards, keep your diagram hand sharp, and do not start new material. The key is not the number of papers you complete, but rewriting every question you got wrong.

First, definitions missing key terms, such as opportunity cost without next best alternative, or inflation without sustained and general price level. Second, one sided evaluation with no trade off and no conclusion. Third, using vague real world examples instead of a clear logical chain. Fourth, arithmetic and percentage errors, including dropping the sign on PED. Fifth, unlabelled axes and unlabelled curves. Sixth, informal language replacing terminology, for example writing that people simply stop buying instead of stating that demand falls. Keep this list above your desk and read it before every mock exam.
