In GCSE History most marks are lost not because students lack knowledge but because they cannot organise what they know into a coherent argument. Whether you sit AQA, Edexcel, OCR or CAIE, the extended essay questions in Paper 2 and Paper 3 (usually worth 12 or 16 marks) demand a clear structure written under time pressure. This guide breaks the history essay into a reusable template: mark scheme, overall framework, introduction, body paragraphs, source use, conclusion and timing, with bilingual model sentences at every stage.
Mark schemes differ in detail but agree in substance. AQA grades 12-mark answers in levels that reward knowledge, analysis and judgement; Edexcel awards 4 of 16 marks for factual knowledge (AO1) and 12 for analysis and evaluation (AO2); OCR asks for a supported judgement in its 10-mark questions; CAIE often splits Paper 2 into a 7-mark and a 6-mark part. Across every board, top-level answers share three features: a clear line of argument, precise factual support, and a weighing of competing explanations. Before writing, spend one minute reading the question stem and identify the command word. Describe asks only for description, Explain demands causal reasoning, and Assess or Evaluate requires a judgement. Copy that command word onto your planning sheet and keep returning to it. In a 16-mark question factual knowledge accounts for only part of the total, while analysis and judgement carry the rest, which is why structure alone can move an answer up a level.
A high-scoring essay almost always contains an introduction, three or four body paragraphs and a conclusion, and this shape works for every board. Do not start writing immediately. After reading a 16-mark question, give yourself five minutes to plan: draw a vertical line down the middle of your planning sheet, list the arguments that support the statement or explain the main cause on the left, and counter-arguments or secondary causes on the right, then rank them by importance. Beside each point jot down the specific evidence you will use: dates, individuals, treaties, statistics. Ask yourself only three questions while planning: what is my central judgement, which three pieces of evidence prove it best, and what is the strongest opposing argument and how will I answer it? Once the plan is finished, allow four to five minutes each for the introduction and conclusion and eight to ten minutes per body paragraph, leaving three minutes to check spelling and dates.
三、引言段:直接回答问题
引言只有两个任务:表明立场,预告结构。不要用自古以来历史学家一直争论不休这类空话开头,评分标准里没有任何一分是给背景铺垫的。推荐的三句式模板是:第一句直接回答题目(I will argue that ...),第二句给出三个主要理由(This is because A, B and C),第三句交代评判标准或时间范围。例如题目问 1930 年代的绥靖政策是否导致第二次世界大战,可以写成:I will argue that appeasement was the main cause of the Second World War because it destroyed collective security, encouraged Hitler's expansionism and undermined British credibility as a guarantor of peace. 三句话,一分钟写完,却已经把最高档的明确判断稳稳拿下,也让阅卷官在第一秒就知道你要证明什么。如果题目只有 12 分,引言可以压缩成两句,但立场句绝不能省。
The introduction has only two jobs: state your position and signpost your structure. Never open with a sweeping generalisation such as historians have debated this question for centuries, because no mark scheme awards credit for background padding. A reliable three-sentence template works well: sentence one answers the question directly (I will argue that ...), sentence two gives the three main reasons (This is because A, B and C), and sentence three defines the criteria or period you will judge by. For example, if the question asks whether appeasement caused the Second World War, write: I will argue that appeasement was the main cause of the Second World War because it destroyed collective security, encouraged Hitler's expansionism and undermined British credibility as a guarantor of peace. Three sentences, about one minute of writing, already secure the explicit judgement that the top level demands.
四、主体段:PEEL 结构与论证链
每个主体段都按 PEEL 四步推进:Point 论点句、Evidence 史实证据、Explain 解释因果与重要性、Link 回扣题目。论点句必须是判断句而不是事实句,The League of Nations failed because it had no army of its own 是论点,The League of Nations was created in 1920 只是事实。证据要具体到年份、人名、条约和数据,例如 in 1935 only 4 of 52 member states imposed sanctions on Italy,这比 many countries did very little 有力得多。解释部分是得分的核心:说明这份证据如何证明你的论点,以及它为什么重要。最后的 Link 用一句话把本段与题目关键词连接起来,例如 This shows that the collapse of collective security was a direct cause of war。一段只解决一个论点,不要在一段里塞两个论点,否则两边的解释都会变浅。
Every body paragraph should move through four steps: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link. The point sentence must be a judgement rather than a fact: The League of Nations failed because it had no army of its own is a point, whereas The League of Nations was created in 1920 is merely a fact and earns no analytical credit. Evidence should be precise, naming years, people, treaties and figures: in 1935 only 4 of 52 member states imposed sanctions on Italy is far stronger than many countries did very little. Explanation is where the marks live, so show how the evidence proves your point and why it matters historically. Finish with a linking sentence that ties the paragraph back to the wording of the question, for example This shows that the collapse of collective security was a direct cause of war. Keep one argument per paragraph; packing two arguments into one paragraph usually halves the depth of analysis in each.
五、史料运用与历史解释
Paper 3 或 CAIE 的史料题要求你引用史料原文,并说明它的出处、目的与局限。写法分三步:先说明史料说了什么(what it says),再分析作者是谁、为什么这样说(why it says it),最后评价它作为证据的价值与局限(how useful it is)。
Source questions in Paper 3, and throughout CAIE papers, require you to quote the source and then explain its origin, purpose and limitation. Work in three moves: state what the source says, analyse who wrote it and why they wrote it, then evaluate how useful it is as evidence. Interpretation questions, such as the AQA historic environment task or the Edexcel interpretations question, ask you to compare two or three interpretations and explain why they differ, pointing to the author's standpoint, the period in which they wrote, and the evidence available to them. Never copy out a whole paragraph of a source; select one short key phrase, place it in quotation marks, and immediately explain what work it does in your argument. Remember that source questions test how you use evidence to reach a judgement, not whether the source is simply correct, so every quotation needs a following sentence of analysis.
六、结论段:判断、权衡与局限
结论不是重复引言,而是把整篇论证收拢成一个明确的判断,并说明这个判断适用的条件。三段式模板很好用:第一句重述核心判断(Overall, the main reason was ...),第二句承认反方观点的合理之处,但说明为什么它不改变你的结论(While X was important, it was not decisive because ...),第三句给出时间或范围上的限定(This judgement applies mainly to the period 1935 to 1939)。要避开两个常见错误:一是引入全新的论据,结论里不应出现前文没有用过的证据;二是写下以上都是原因这种不下判断的中立结尾,在 16 分题里中立结尾通常只能停在中间档,因为评分标准要求的是评价而不是罗列。
The conclusion is not a restatement of the introduction; it narrows the whole argument into an explicit judgement and states the conditions under which that judgement holds. A three-sentence model works reliably: restate your central claim (Overall, the main reason was ...), concede the strength of the opposing case while explaining why it does not overturn your view (While X was important, it was not decisive because ...), then set a limit of time or scope (This judgement applies mainly to the period 1935 to 1939). Avoid two frequent errors: introducing evidence that has not appeared earlier in the essay, and finishing on a neutral note such as all of these were causes. A neutral ending usually caps a 16-mark answer in the middle level, because the mark scheme rewards evaluation rather than a list of factors. A strong conclusion therefore reads as a verdict, not as a summary.
For a 45-minute question, a sensible split is five minutes planning, five for the introduction, nine for each of three body paragraphs, five for the conclusion and three to check your work. The five most common ways to lose marks are narrating a story without answering the question, making claims without specific evidence, repeating the same argument in paragraphs of equal length, confusing description with explanation, and writing a conclusion that contains no judgement at all. Spelling of proper nouns and dates matters too: examiners are quick to notice mistakes in names such as Weimar, Mussolini or Manchuria, and a wrong date can undermine the credibility of an entire paragraph of evidence. Reserve two or three minutes at the end to check that every paragraph returns to the key words of the question and that each one opens with a clear point sentence.
学习建议 / Study Tips
1. 每周限时练一篇 16 分题,只写规划和引言,训练前十分钟的决策速度。
2. 建立按主题分类的史实卡片,每张卡写事件、年份、意义三行,考前只翻卡片不做长笔记。
3. 背诵十组万能连接句,例如 This shows that、This led directly to、However, this alone cannot explain,让论证流转自然。
4. 用评分标准给自己打分,重点检查是否有明确判断和具体证据,而不是写了多少字。
5. 把历年真题的 command word 全部标注出来,按 Describe、Explain、Assess 分类练习。
6. 找同学互换批改,专门挑出没有史实支撑的句子,这比反复重读自己的文章更有效。
1. Write one timed 16-mark question each week, planning only the first ten minutes so that the decision-making becomes automatic.
2. Build evidence cards by topic, with three lines each for event, date and significance, and revise from cards rather than long notes.
3. Memorise about ten linking phrases, such as This shows that, This led directly to, and However, this alone cannot explain, so your argument flows naturally.
4. Mark your own work against the mark scheme, checking for explicit judgement and precise evidence rather than counting words.
5. Highlight the command word in every past paper question and practise in sets sorted by Describe, Explain and Assess.
6. Swap essays with a classmate and ask them to underline any sentence that lacks factual support, which is far more effective than rereading your own work.
