AQA GCSE
(Physical Landscapes in the UK) 是 Paper 1「Living with the physical environment」的必考单元, 通常占 15 到 20 分。
读完你应该能独立回答「Explain how a waterfall is formed」和「Assess the effectiveness of hard engineering」这两类高频题。
Physical Landscapes in the UK is a compulsory unit in AQA GCSE Geography Paper 1, usually worth 15 to 20 marks. It combines river, coastal, glacial and limestone landscapes, and expects both process knowledge and named UK case studies. This guide links the four landscapes into one chain: shared processes, landforms with cases, then answer structures for 4-, 6- and 9-mark questions.
All landscapes are shaped by four processes: weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition. Weathering breaks rock in situ: freeze-thaw, biological and chemical (carbonation on limestone). Erosion removes the debris through hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution. Material moves by suspension, saltation, traction and solution, and is deposited when energy falls, so the largest clasts settle first and grading follows.
River energy changes downstream, so landforms appear in sequence. In the upper course, steep gradients and fast flow produce vertical erosion, V-shaped valleys and gorges. Where hard rock overlies softer rock, a waterfall forms: water falls into a plunge pool, undercuts the hard cap, and the fall retreats upstream to leave a gorge. High Force on the River Tees, about 21 metres high and capped by whin sill, is the classic UK example. In the middle course, lateral erosion creates meanders with river cliffs and slip-off slopes. In the lower course, deposition builds oxbow lakes, floodplains, deltas and estuaries.
Dorset 的 Old Harry Rocks 是 AQA 常用的例子。
Whether a coastline is eroded or built up depends on wave type. Destructive waves, generated by long fetch winds, are tall, low frequency and dominated by backwash, so they erode. Constructive waves are short, low and high frequency with strong swash, so they deposit. Erosion works through hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution, plus salt weathering. On a headland the sequence runs from wave-cut notch to cliff and wave-cut platform, and where vertical joints are attacked, from cave to arch to stack to stump. Old Harry Rocks in Dorset is the standard AQA case.
Jurassic Coast
Where wave energy drops or longshore drift meets a change in coastline direction, deposition builds beaches, spits, bars and dunes. Spurn Head, at the southern end of the Holderness coast, is the classic UK spit, formed where sediment transported southward by longshore drift is deposited at the mouth of the Humber. Holderness is also one of Europe's fastest-eroding coastlines, retreating about 1.8 metres a year because its soft boulder clay is easily attacked. Hard engineering such as sea walls, rock armour and groynes is used, but groynes starve beaches further along the coast, which is exactly the evaluation point examiners look for in 9-mark questions.
Glacial landforms fall into two groups. Erosional forms include the corrie (a bowl-shaped hollow gouged by rotational ice), the arete (a knife-edge ridge between two retreating corries) and the pyramidal peak, with Snowdon and Crib Goch in Snowdonia as standard cases. Ice also turns V-shaped valleys into broad, steep-sided U-shaped valleys and truncates spurs. Depositional forms include unsorted, angular till, terminal moraine marking the former ice limit, and swarms of drumlins whose orientation records ice flow. The Lake District offers corrie lakes and U-shaped valleys for case study use.
Limestone and chalk are permeable carbonate rocks. Rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide to form a weak carbonic acid that reacts with calcium carbonate, so carbonation widens joints into cave systems. Surface features include swallow holes and limestone pavement, while underground features include caves, stalactites growing down from the roof, stalagmites growing up from the floor, and pillars where the two meet. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales are the standard AQA case, and their groundwater system explains why surface drainage is scarce.
Hard engineering controls natural processes with structures. It works quickly and lasts decades but is expensive and visually damaging. Soft engineering works with processes through beach nourishment, planting, dune fencing and managed retreat; it is cheaper and more ecological but needs maintenance and raises landownership questions. Sea walls reflect wave energy and protect cliff bases, but cost thousands of pounds per metre and can accelerate beach loss, while rock armour and gabions are cheaper but visually intrusive.
The River Tees rises near Cross Fell in the Pennines and flows about 137 kilometres to the North Sea, which makes it the ideal AQA case because one river covers all three courses. In the upper course, high rainfall and steep gradients produce narrow V-shaped valleys, the High Force waterfall with its retreating gorge, and a bed of large, angular clasts transported by traction and saltation. In the middle course, the valley widens and large meanders develop near Barnard Castle, with erosion on the outer bank and deposition on the slip-off slope. In the lower course around Yarm, the gradient is very gentle, sediment becomes fine sand and silt, and floodplains, embankments and a wide estuary appear near the port and industrial zone.
Human activity reshapes natural landscapes in four main ways. Land use differs by course: upland valleys suit grazing and reservoirs such as Cow Green, while lowland floodplains carry farmland and housing that suffer heavy losses when rivers flood. Quarrying, especially for cement in limestone areas, damages limestone pavement and cave systems and brings dust and traffic. Tourism in Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales creates jobs and income but causes footpath erosion, nutrient enrichment of lakes and parking pressure. Finally, urbanisation adds impermeable surfaces, shortens lag time and raises peak discharge, so reservoirs, embankments and flood storage areas are needed to reduce flood peaks.
Data questions almost always accompany this unit. On rainfall bar charts, read both total and intensity, because short intense storms generate higher flood peaks than prolonged light rain. On hydrographs, identify peak discharge and lag time: urban catchments show a higher peak and shorter lag, forested catchments the opposite. On coastal retreat graphs, compare coastline positions between years, calculate the average rate and link differences to rock type, since boulder clay retreats far faster than chalk. The top-band sentence structure is data, then trend, then explanation, then impact.
6 分题常出现「Explain the formation of landform A and landform B」, 两个地貌各给三条链, 每条链必须写出具体地名。
A 4-mark question usually says Explain how X is formed and needs a chain of two or three links: name the process, give the mechanism, state the result. A 6-mark question often covers two landforms, so give three links for each and name specific places. When the command word is Assess or Evaluate, always give both sides and finish with a justified judgement; comparing urban and rural, or richer and poorer areas, is the fastest route to the top band. For OS map questions, practise contour interpretation, scale distance and grid references. For data questions, be ready to read rainfall, river discharge and coastal retreat graphs.
