AQA GCSE
Atomic structure is the opening topic of AQA GCSE Chemistry Paper 1, yet it appears in almost every past paper: multiple-choice questions test particle counts, short-answer questions test electronic configuration, and calculation questions test relative atomic mass. Many students assume this topic can be memorised in one evening, then lose crucial marks when asked to explain periodic trends or work out isotope abundance from percentage data. This article links the six core knowledge points of atomic structure into one coherent study path, with parallel Chinese and English explanations plus exam technique, for students preparing AQA 8462 Chemistry Paper 1.
The Three Subatomic Particles
An atom is made of protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons carry a +1 charge and a relative mass of about 1; neutrons carry no charge and also have a relative mass of about 1; electrons carry a -1 charge and have a mass of roughly 1/1836 that of a proton, so their mass is ignored in calculations. Protons and neutrons sit together in the nucleus, while electrons occupy the space around it. An atom is electrically neutral because the number of protons equals the number of electrons. In the AQA exam you must read particle numbers straight from the notation: Na-23 is a sodium atom with mass number 23 and atomic number 11, giving 11 protons, 12 neutrons and 11 electrons. Written as the Na+ ion it has only 10 electrons, because one electron has been lost. The rule neutrons = mass number - atomic number is often worth a separate mark on its own. Remember too that almost all of an atom's mass is concentrated in the nucleus, while the electrons contribute almost nothing, which is why the mass number counts only protons and neutrons.
Atomic Number, Mass Number and Isotopes
The atomic number is the number of protons. It defines the element and determines its position in the periodic table. Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons are isotopes of one another. Chlorine, for example, has two main isotopes, Cl-35 and Cl-37, which have almost identical chemical properties because chemistry is governed by electron arrangement, while physical properties such as density and rate of diffusion differ slightly. The existence of isotopes explains why relative atomic masses on the periodic table are rarely whole numbers. A frequent exam question asks you to explain why chlorine has a relative atomic mass of 35.5 rather than a whole number. A full-mark answer needs two ideas: chlorine has more than one isotope, and the relative atomic mass is a weighted average of the isotope mass numbers according to their abundance. Stating only that isotopes exist usually earns half marks.
Electron Shells and Electronic Configuration
Electrons are arranged in shells around the nucleus. The maximum number of electrons in any shell is given by 2n², so the first shell holds up to 2, the second up to 8, and the third up to 8. Inner shells must be filled before outer shells, and this rule directly determines an element's position in the periodic table. Sodium has 11 electrons arranged as 2,8,1, with a single electron in its outer shell, which places it in Group 1. Always separate the shells with commas rather than writing 281. Two patterns are essential: elements with the same number of outer electrons belong to the same group, and elements with the same number of shells belong to the same period. AQA frequently asks you to identify the group from a configuration or to compare two elements' chemical similarity, so state the outer electron count first and then draw the conclusion.
Arrangement of the Periodic Table and Its Trends
The modern periodic table is arranged in order of increasing atomic number, not relative atomic mass. With this arrangement, elements of similar chemical behaviour fall regularly into the same column, called a group. Metals occupy the left and centre, non-metals the right, and Group 0 contains the noble gases, whose outer shells are full so they are unreactive. Going down a group, atomic radius increases and the outer electron is easier to lose, so metallic character increases. In Group 1, lithium, sodium and potassium react with water with increasing vigour. Going across a period from left to right, the number of outer electrons increases and elements change gradually from metallic to non-metallic. In Group 7, moving from fluorine to iodine, the atomic radius increases and it becomes harder to gain an outer electron, so reactivity decreases. The core logic for every answer is simple: structure determines properties, and position reflects structure.
Calculating Relative Atomic Mass
Calculating relative atomic mass is one of the highest-frequency calculation questions in AQA exams. The basic method is a weighted average: multiply each isotope's abundance by its mass number, add the results, then divide by the total abundance. For an element with two isotopes, X-63 at 69 percent abundance and X-65 at 31 percent, the relative atomic mass is (63 x 69 + 65 x 31) / 100 = (4347 + 2015) / 100 = 6362 / 100 = 63.62. If the question gives numbers of atoms rather than percentages, use those numbers as the weights: for example, three X-63 atoms to one X-65 atom gives (63 x 3 + 65 x 1) / 4 = 254 / 4 = 63.5. Two decimal places is sufficient. The two most common errors are forgetting to divide by the total weight and swapping the mass numbers with the abundances. Write the formula out first, then substitute the numbers, so the order cannot go wrong.
Common Exam Questions and Answer Technique
Questions on atomic structure in AQA exams fall into four types. The first is particle counting: read the charge at the top right of the symbol and decide whether to add or subtract electrons. The second is electronic configuration: apply the 2,8,8 filling rule and never exceed a shell's capacity. The third is deducing position in the periodic table: count the shells for the period, then count the outer electrons for the group. The fourth is relative atomic mass calculation: always show the formula, substitute the values, and state the units. In written answers, use precise terminology. Relative atomic mass must be described as a weighted average, and the periodic table must be described as ordered by increasing atomic number; vague wording does not earn marks. Use the mark allocation as a guide: a two-mark question normally needs two separate points, while a three-mark question usually expects a complete causal chain. AQA also rewards a clear causal chain, so when explaining why one element is more reactive, move through three steps: the number of outer electrons, how easily they are lost, and how vigorous the reaction becomes.
Study Tips
First, learn the electronic configurations of the first twenty elements until you can write them from memory, because every later chapter builds on them. Second, organise particle counting questions into a table with three columns for protons, neutrons and electrons so you can apply the method directly in the exam. Third, practise at least ten relative atomic mass calculations covering both percentage abundance and atom-count versions. Fourth, answer every explanation question using the single thread that structure determines properties. Fifth, keep a list of your own recurring errors, such as forgetting to subtract the atomic number or omitting commas in a configuration. Sixth, redo your wrong answers every two weeks and look closely at which key words you left out. With one month of steady practice, this chapter can become a reliable source of near-full marks.
