AQA GCSE Chemistry 的 Bonding, Structure and the Properties of Matter 是整个 Paper 1 的基石单元。

Bonding, Structure and the Properties of Matter is the foundation unit of AQA GCSE Chemistry Paper 1. It appears in multiple choice questions and in six mark extended explanations, and it is almost always combined with Energy Changes or Quantitative Chemistry in the same paper. Many students can recite the definition of an ionic bond but lose marks when asked why graphite conducts electricity or why sodium chloride melts at a very high temperature. This guide breaks the five bonding and structure types into reusable answer frameworks with bilingual key terminology.

Why Atoms Bond

The only driving force behind bond formation is the tendency of atoms to achieve a stable electron arrangement, normally a full outer shell like a noble gas. Metal atoms tend to lose electrons and become positive ions, non metal atoms tend to gain electrons and become negative ions, and two non metal atoms usually share a pair of electrons. The first rule for identifying a bond type is the combination of elements: metal plus non metal usually means ionic bonding, non metal plus non metal usually means covalent bonding, and metal plus metal means metallic bonding.

The second rule concerns the scale of the structure. The same element can form completely different structures under different conditions. Carbon forms diamond, graphite, graphene and fullerenes, all with similar chemical properties but dramatically different physical properties, purely because of how the atoms are arranged. AQA questions often use this to test whether you can explain the causal link between structure and properties rather than simply recall names. In an extended answer, describe the structure first, then the property, then use a linking word such as because or therefore to connect them.

Ionic Bonding

An ionic bond is the strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, formed after a metal atom loses electrons to become a positive ion and a non metal atom gains electrons to become a negative ion. In sodium chloride, a sodium atom loses one outer electron to form a sodium ion and a chlorine atom gains one electron to form a chloride ion. Both reach a full outer shell and pack together in three dimensions to form a giant ionic lattice. To gain full credit for the definition, your answer must contain electron transfer, positive and negative ions, and electrostatic attraction.

The physical properties of ionic compounds follow directly from the lattice. Because the ionic bonds are strong, a large amount of energy is needed to pull the ions apart, so melting points and boiling points are high. In the solid state the ions are fixed in position in the lattice and cannot move, so the compound does not conduct electricity. Once it is melted or dissolved in water the ions become free to move and the compound conducts. Always state this contrast explicitly: ions fixed in the solid, ions mobile in the liquid or in solution.

Covalent Bonding

A covalent bond is formed when two non metal atoms share a pair of electrons. The shared pair is attracted to both nuclei at the same time, which holds the atoms firmly together. Typical examples include hydrogen, chlorine, water, methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia. When drawing dot and cross diagrams, make sure the total number of electrons around each atom is eight, except for hydrogen which needs only two. Missing lone pairs or leaving an atom short of a full shell is the most common way to lose marks here.

The covalent bonds inside a simple molecule are strong, but the intermolecular forces between separate molecules are weak, so melting points and boiling points are low and the substances are usually gases or liquids at room temperature. This also explains why carbon dioxide is a gas while silicon dioxide, also a covalent compound, is a solid with a very high melting point. Silicon dioxide is a giant covalent structure: the whole solid is one enormous covalent network, so melting it means breaking a great many strong covalent bonds.

The three giant structures of carbon deserve separate attention. In diamond each carbon atom bonds to four others in a three dimensional tetrahedral network, giving extreme hardness and no electrical conductivity. In graphite each carbon atom bonds to only three others, forming hexagonal layers, so the layers can slide over each other and the remaining delocalised electron from each atom is free to move along the layer. Graphite is therefore both slippery and a good conductor. Graphene is a single layer of graphite, while fullerenes are cage like molecular structures.

Metallic Bonding

Metallic bonding describes a lattice of positive metal ions surrounded by delocalised electrons that have left the outer shells of the atoms. The strong electrostatic attraction between the positive ions and the sea of electrons holds the whole structure together. Metals conduct electricity because the delocalised electrons can move through the lattice in a definite direction to carry a current. They conduct heat because the free electrons transfer energy rapidly through the metal. They are malleable because layers of ions can slide over one another while the bonding is maintained.

Alloys are usually harder than pure metals because atoms of different sizes disrupt the regular layered arrangement, so the layers of ions cannot slide over each other easily. Pure aluminium is soft, while aluminium alloys are hard. Pure iron is relatively soft, while steel is hard. When explaining this in an exam, you must include the idea that atoms of different sizes disturb the regular arrangement, otherwise the explanation mark is not awarded.

Intermolecular Forces and Polymers

Intermolecular forces are the weak attractions between molecules. They are far weaker than covalent bonds but they control boiling points and the physical state of a substance. The larger the molecule, the greater the contact area between molecules, the stronger the forces, and the higher the boiling point. This is why methane is a gas and octane is a liquid. A common exam question asks you to compare the boiling points of two hydrocarbons. The template is to state that both are simple molecules with strong covalent bonds inside, then explain that the larger molecule has stronger intermolecular forces and therefore needs more energy to overcome them.

Polymers are long chains built from monomers joined by covalent bonds, with the chains held together by weak intermolecular forces. In a thermosoftening polymer, heating overcomes the forces between the chains so they can slide past each other, which means the polymer can be reshaped repeatedly. In a thermosetting polymer, cross links form covalent bonds between the chains, so once it has set it cannot be melted again. This distinction is examined regularly, and the key term you must include is covalent cross links.

Structure Determines Properties

When you meet an unfamiliar structure and property question, work through four steps. First, decide whether the substance is ionic, a simple molecule, a giant covalent structure or a metal. Second, describe what the particles are and what force holds them together. Third, say whether those particles can move or whether the layers can slide. Fourth, link the structure directly to melting point, electrical conductivity and malleability. This framework covers almost every six mark structure and property question in AQA Paper 1.

Comparing the four structure types side by side makes them easier to remember. Ionic compounds have high melting points, do not conduct when solid, and conduct when molten or dissolved. Simple molecules have low melting points and do not conduct. Giant covalent structures have extremely high melting points and do not conduct, except graphite. Metals cover a wide range of melting points and conduct both electricity and heat, and they are malleable. Writing this comparison as a single page of notes and reciting it aloud before the exam is far more effective than working through endless practice questions without a framework.

Exam Technique

使用 therefore、because、as a result 这类连接词可以让阅卷老师一眼看到因果关系。

The first common loss is stating a conclusion without a reason. If a question asks why sodium chloride has a high melting point, saying that it has strong bonds is not enough. You must explain that the electrostatic attraction between the ions is strong, so a large amount of energy is needed to break the lattice. The second loss is confusing bonds with forces, for example claiming that a simple molecule has a low boiling point because its covalent bonds are weak. The correct statement is that the intermolecular forces are weak. The third common loss is leaving out the word mobile in conductivity answers: whether the charge carriers are ions or electrons, conduction requires charged particles that are free to move.

For a six mark question, list three or four marking points first and then expand each one in a single sentence, keeping the logical chain intact. Connectives such as therefore, because and as a result make the causal reasoning visible to the examiner. If the question includes a graph or a table of data, describe the trend before explaining it, because those two parts carry separate marks. Finish by spending thirty seconds checking units, symbols and the subscripts in your chemical formulas.
