AQA GCSE

The particle model is the backbone of the structure of matter unit in AQA GCSE Physics Paper 1. A very small set of assumptions explains density, changes of state, internal energy, specific heat capacity, specific latent heat and gas pressure, which together form one large block of exam content. Many students memorise the formulas but lose marks on explanation questions because they never link the macroscopic behaviour to the microscopic particles. This article walks through seven high frequency points in exam order, each with bilingual explanation, a worked calculation and a model answer structure. Work through it once and the question types in this topic start to look very repetitive indeed.

一、粒子模型的三个基本假设 The Three Assumptions

The particle model explains every macroscopic behaviour of matter with only three assumptions. First, all matter consists of very small particles with empty space between them, and in a gas the gaps are far larger than the particles themselves. Second, the particles are in constant random motion, and the higher the temperature, the greater their average kinetic energy and the more vigorous the motion. Brownian motion and diffusion are the direct evidence for this: a pollen grain jitters in water because it is constantly struck by randomly moving water molecules from all sides. Third, forces act between particles, repulsive when they are very close and attractive at slightly greater separations. Learn these three statements and everything that follows can be deduced from them. AQA loves asking you to explain diffusion using the particle model: the particles move randomly, producing a net movement from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration until the mixture is uniform, and a higher temperature increases the average kinetic energy so diffusion is faster.

二、密度与粒子排列 Density and Particle Arrangement

Density is mass per unit volume, given by the equation density = mass / volume, with the unit kg/m³. The most common error is units: 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³, so always convert to SI units before substituting. Worked example: a metal block measuring 10 cm by 5 cm by 2 cm has a mass of 0.27 kg. Its volume is 10 x 5 x 2 = 100 cm³ = 1.0 x 10^-4 m³, so its density is 0.27 divided by 1.0 x 10^-4, which is 2700 kg/m³, identifying the metal as aluminium. Use the particle model to explain the density of the three states. In a solid the particles are closely and regularly packed, giving the greatest density. In a liquid the particles are still very close together but can slide over one another, so the volume is fixed, the shape is not, and the density is slightly lower than the solid. In a gas the separation between particles is at least ten times their diameter, so the density is the lowest, typically about one thousandth that of the solid. To measure the density of an irregular solid, find the mass with a balance and the volume by the displacement method using a eureka can or a measuring cylinder, then divide.

三、内能、温度与加热 Internal Energy, Temperature and Heating

Internal energy is the total kinetic energy plus the total potential energy of all the particles in an object. Three ideas must be kept apart here. Temperature reflects only the average kinetic energy of the particles, not the total internal energy. Internal energy includes both kinetic and potential contributions. Energy is always transferred by heating from a hotter object to a cooler one until the temperatures are equal. Heating is the most common way to change internal energy and it has two very different outcomes. If no change of state is taking place, all the energy transferred becomes kinetic energy of the particles, so the temperature rises. If the substance is melting or boiling, the energy transferred is used to overcome the attractive forces between particles and increase their potential energy, so the temperature stays constant. That is a standard six mark explanation question, and your answer must contain the three key phrases: potential energy increases, kinetic energy stays the same, and temperature does not change. Doing work on a gas also changes its internal energy: compressing it increases the average kinetic energy of the particles, raising the temperature, which is exactly how a diesel engine ignites its fuel.

四、比热容与计算 Specific Heat Capacity

Specific heat capacity is defined as the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 degree C. The equation is E = m c delta theta, where E is the energy transferred in joules, m is the mass in kilograms, c is the specific heat capacity in joules per kilogram per degree C, and delta theta is the temperature change in degrees C. Water has a specific heat capacity of 4200 J/kg degree C, which is unusually high. That means water warms up slowly and cools down slowly, which is why central heating systems use water to carry energy, and why coastal areas have a smaller day to night temperature range than inland areas. Worked example: how much energy is needed to heat 2 kg of water from 20 degree C to 70 degree C? The temperature change is 50 degree C, so E = 2 x 4200 x 50 = 420000 J, that is 420 kJ. In calculation questions always write the equation first, then substitute the values keeping the units, and finally state a conclusion in words, because mark schemes award those three steps separately. For the reverse question, rearranging to delta theta = E / (m c) gives the temperature change, and you must state clearly whether it rises or falls.

五、比潜热与物态变化 Specific Latent Heat

When a substance melts or boils it absorbs energy without getting hotter, and this hidden energy is described by specific latent heat. Specific latent heat is defined as the energy needed to change the state of 1 kg of a substance at constant temperature, and it is calculated with E = m L. For water the specific latent heat of fusion is 334000 J/kg and the specific latent heat of vaporisation is 2260000 J/kg, roughly seven times larger. The reason is that melting only requires particles to break free from their regular arrangement, whereas boiling requires them to escape the attractive forces between each other completely and move far apart, which takes far more energy. Worked example: how much energy is needed to melt 0.5 kg of ice? E = 0.5 x 334000 = 167000 J, or 167 kJ. Exams also ask you to interpret a heating curve: every horizontal plateau corresponds to a change of state, where energy keeps being supplied but the temperature stops rising, and a longer plateau means a larger specific latent heat. The classic mistakes are reading "temperature constant" as "no energy absorbed" and mixing up which plateau is melting and which is boiling.

六、气体压强与绝对零度 Gas Pressure and Absolute Zero

Gas pressure comes from particles repeatedly colliding with the walls of the container. Raising the temperature increases the average kinetic energy of the particles, so they hit the walls more often and with more force, which raises the pressure. Reducing the volume of the container also raises the pressure, because the particles strike the walls more frequently. All gas calculations must use absolute temperature in kelvin, where T in kelvin equals the temperature in degrees C plus 273. Absolute zero is -273 degree C, or 0 K, the point at which the particles have the minimum possible kinetic energy. For a fixed mass of gas, pressure, volume and temperature are related by P1 V1 / T1 = P2 V2 / T2. Worked example: a gas at 300 K and 100 kPa is sealed in a rigid container and heated to 400 K. Since the volume is constant, P2 = P1 x T2 / T1 = 100 x 400 / 300 = 133 kPa. Everyday applications are also examined: a bicycle pump gets warm because compressing the gas does work on its particles and increases their average kinetic energy, and a pressure cooker cooks food faster because the higher pressure raises the boiling point of water above 100 degree C.

七、必做实验与答题模板 Required Practicals and Exam Technique

AQA includes three required practicals in this unit. First, measuring the density of regular and irregular solids: find the volume of a regular solid from three measured lengths, and use a balance plus the displacement method for an irregular solid, reading the volume at eye level with the bottom of the meniscus. Second, determining the specific heat capacity of water with an electric heater: record the power of the heater, the time switched on, the mass of water and the temperature rise, obtain the energy supplied from E = P t, then substitute into c = E / (m delta theta). The key experimental points are insulation, stirring to keep the temperature uniform, and waiting for a steady reading before recording, and you should explain that energy is lost to the surroundings, which tends to make the measured value too large. Third, determining the specific latent heat of ice: allow ice to melt in a funnel while a heater supplies a known amount of energy, record the mass melted, and calculate L = E / m, explaining that some energy heats the melted water and therefore introduces error. The answer structure never changes: write the equation, substitute the values with units, and finish with a sentence of physical explanation. Explanation questions usually award two marks for linking the observation to particle behaviour, two for the energy transfer, and two for the resulting change in temperature or pressure. Learn the three equations in this chapter until you can write them from memory, combine them with the three assumptions of the particle model, and the structure of matter questions become straightforward marks.
