KS3历史 一战 World War I 堑壕战 考点
World War I was not an accident. Historians use the acronym MAIN to remember four long-term causes: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism. Between 1870 and 1914 the European powers raced to build up their armies and navies, and Britain and Germany competed in a naval arms race in which Germany passed a series of Navy Laws to build more Dreadnought battleships. The alliance system split Europe into the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France and Russia). Imperial rivalry over colonies produced repeated crises in Morocco and the Balkans, while nationalism, especially Slav nationalism in the Balkans, made relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia dangerously tense. Taken together, these four factors meant that any local quarrel could be enlarged by alliance obligations into a general European war.
The spark came on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo, where the Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie. The July Crisis that followed moved like falling dominoes: Austria-Hungary sent Serbia an ultimatum, Russia ordered mobilisation in support of Serbia, and Germany gave Austria-Hungary a "blank cheque" of unconditional support. In early August Germany put the Schlieffen Plan into action by invading France through neutral Belgium, and Britain declared war because the 1839 Treaty of London guaranteed Belgian neutrality. By the end of August 1914 every major European power was at war, even though many soldiers believed they would be home before Christmas.
After the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914 the Schlieffen Plan failed and both sides began the "Race to the Sea", digging a trench system that eventually stretched more than 700 km from the Swiss border to the North Sea. A typical position had three lines: the front line, support trenches and reserve trenches, linked by communication trenches. Barbed wire, machine guns and artillery made frontal attacks extremely costly, so the Western Front became deadlocked in what is called a war of attrition. Trench life meant mud, flooded dugouts, rats, lice and trench foot, and soldiers were rotated out of the line to rest, wash and receive reinforcements. Understanding this stalemate is the key to the whole war: until 1918, defensive technology was always stronger than offensive technology.
The Battle of Verdun (February to December 1916) was a German battle of attrition designed to "bleed France white". French casualties reached about 160,000, and General Petain organised the defence with the motto "Ils ne passeront pas" (they shall not pass); the Germans never took the town. On the first day of the Somme (1 July 1916) the British army suffered about 57,000 casualties, the worst single day in its history, and the whole offensive advanced only around 10 km. Passchendaele (1917) was fought in the low marshes near Ypres in Belgium, where constant rain turned the battlefield into a sea of mud; the British lost about 300,000 men and advanced roughly 8 km. All three battles show how terribly expensive it was to trade lives for ground once machine guns and artillery dominated the field.
Machine guns gave a decisive advantage to defenders: a single Maxim gun could pin down an entire battalion of infantry. Germany used chlorine gas on a large scale at Ypres in 1915 and mustard gas in 1917. Tanks were first used in battle on the Somme in September 1916, and around 400 tanks attacked together at Cambrai in 1917, showing that trenches could be broken. Aircraft developed from reconnaissance machines into fighters and bombers, while submarines made unrestricted warfare possible and helped to bring the United States into the war. Together these technologies turned a war of movement into industrialised slaughter and created psychological trauma on a scale never seen before.
Soldiers faced not only shellfire but also disease, exhaustion and long stretches of boredom. Britain relied on volunteers at first, then introduced conscription in January 1916. Large numbers of women took jobs in factories, on buses, in hospitals and in munitions works, and in 1918 some British women over 30 gained the vote, one of the most direct social changes caused by the war. Governments used propaganda posters, censorship, the Defence of the Realm Act and rationing to control opinion and resources. Total war meant that the civilian economy, family life and the press were all tied to the fighting, and nobody could stay completely outside it.
In 1917 unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann Telegram brought the United States into the war, and American industry and manpower became a decisive advantage for the Allies. In the same year revolution broke out in Russia, which signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918 and left the war, allowing Germany to move troops from the Eastern to the Western Front. In March 1918 Germany launched the Spring Offensive and came close to Paris, but the Allied line held and the German reserves were used up; the Allies then pushed forward in the Hundred Days Offensive. The Armistice took effect at 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 forced Germany to accept war guilt, give up territory, limit its armed forces and pay reparations, and those harsh terms helped to sow the seeds of a new conflict twenty years later.
KS3 history exams usually test three skills. Describe questions ask you to extract specific information from a source, so quote details directly, such as water knee-deep in the trenches. Why questions ask for two or three causes and an explanation of how they link, for example how the alliance system turned a local quarrel into a European war. Source utility questions ask you to weigh origin, author, purpose and limitations; a 1915 recruitment poster, for instance, shows government propaganda rather than the whole truth. Using chronological connectives such as at first, subsequently and as a result, and quoting exact dates and casualty figures, will clearly raise your mark.
World War I caused about 17 million deaths and 20 million wounded, a large share of them civilians. Four empires collapsed during the war: Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire and the German Empire, and a group of new states appeared in central and eastern Europe, including Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The League of Nations, founded in 1919, was the first attempt to prevent war through collective security, but it was weakened because the United States did not join and it had no real power to enforce its decisions. There were unexpected gains in medicine and society too: blood transfusion, plastic surgery, battlefield first aid and the study of psychological trauma all advanced rapidly because of wartime need. Every 11 November, Britain remembers the dead by wearing a red poppy, a day known as Remembrance Day, which reminds later generations of the price of peace.
