Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) is the stretch of school where English writing habits harden. Many students arrive with a decent vocabulary and solid grammar, yet still lose marks on essays, and the reason is rarely the language itself. It is structure. A clearly structured essay lets an examiner follow your argument within thirty seconds; a muddled one gets labelled unclear even when the sentences are polished. This introduction sets out the four working parts of essay structure: the introduction, the body paragraph, the links between paragraphs, and the planning that happens before you write a single sentence. It finishes with the mistakes that cost the most marks and a realistic way to budget time under exam conditions.

一、为什么结构比词藻更能拉开分差

KS3 的英语评分标准通常把分数拆成两块:内容与观点,以及结构与表达。前者看你说得对不对、有没有证据;后者看你有没有逻辑地组织。词汇属于第二条的后半段,它只是一小部分。真正拉开差距的是:读者能否预判你下一段要说什么。要做到这一点,需要三个习惯:每段只讲一个中心意思;每段开头先给论点句(topic sentence);每段结尾回到题目。

At KS3, marks are normally split between content and ideas on the one hand, and structure and expression on the other. Content asks whether your points are relevant and supported. Structure asks whether they are organised. Vocabulary sits inside the second category, and only in its lower half. What really separates a grade 5 essay from a grade 8 essay is predictability: can the reader guess what your next paragraph will do before reading it? Three habits create that effect. Give each paragraph exactly one central idea. Open the paragraph with a topic sentence that states that idea. Close it by returning to the question.

举一个真实的评分权重例子:在 AQA GCSE 英语语言 Paper 1 里,写作题(Q5)占 80 分中的 40 分,也就是整份试卷的一半;Paper 2 的写作题同样是 40 分。这个安排说明,写作不是附加题,结构训练从 KS3 开始积累,到 GCSE 就是直接的分数。

Here is a concrete weighting example. In AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1, the writing question (Q5) is worth 40 of the 80 marks, exactly half the paper; Paper 2 carries the same 40 mark writing task. Writing is not a side dish. Structural training begun in KS3 converts directly into GCSE marks.

二、引言段:钩子、背景、论点三件套

引言段的任务只有三个,顺序也固定。第一句是钩子(hook),用一个具体场景、一个反问或一个简短事实把读者拉进来。第二到第三句是背景(context),交代题目涉及的话题范围,但不要复述题目原文。最后一句是论点句(thesis statement),用一句话回答题目,并预告后面的段落顺序。KS3 最常见的错误是把引言段写成"我要讨论什么"的说明,而不是"我的观点是什么"。

The introduction has three jobs and a fixed order. The first sentence is the hook: a specific scene, a pointed question, or a short striking fact that pulls the reader in. The next two or three sentences give context, framing the topic without simply repeating the question in different words. The final sentence is the thesis: a single sentence that answers the question and previews the order of your paragraphs. The typical KS3 mistake is writing about what you are going to discuss rather than stating what you actually think. Compare the weak version, "In this essay I will talk about whether school uniform is a good idea", with the strong version, "School uniform reduces visible inequality in the classroom, and that benefit outweighs its cost to student self expression". The second sentence is a claim, and a claim can be argued, supported, and judged.

钩子有很多种写法,KS3 阶段最好练熟三种。场景式:把读者放进一个具体画面,例如"每天早上七点四十,校门口的地面上总躺着同一件被丢下的外套"。数据式:用一个可核查的数字开场,让读者立刻感到问题真实存在。反问式:直接向读者提问,迫使他们思考。三种不要同时用,一篇论文用一个就够;钩子堆多了反而稀释论点。

Hooks come in many shapes, and three are worth mastering at KS3. A scene hook places the reader inside a specific image, for instance "at twenty to eight every morning the same abandoned blazer lies on the playground by the school gate". A statistic hook opens with a checkable number so the reader feels the problem is real. A rhetorical question hook addresses the reader directly and forces them to think. Do not use all three at once; one strong hook carries a whole essay, and stacking them dilutes the thesis.

论点句还有一个隐藏作用:它是你整篇论文的路标。写完之后回看论点句,如果主体段的顺序和它预告的顺序不一致,说明你的规划出了问题。

The thesis also acts as a signpost for the whole essay. Read it back after drafting: if the order of your body paragraphs does not match the order announced in that sentence, your plan, not your writing, is what needs fixing.

三、主体段:PEEL 四步结构与范例拆解

主体段是分数的来源,KS3 普遍使用 PEEL 结构,四个字母对应四步。P(Point,论点):第一句点明本段要证明什么。E(Evidence,证据):引用原文、数据或具体事例,必须精确到细节。E(Explanation,解释):说明证据如何支持论点,这是最容易被跳过、也是最能加分的一步。L(Link,衔接):一句话收束本段,并引出下一段,或者回到题目。

Body paragraphs carry the marks, and KS3 English teaching generally uses the PEEL pattern. P stands for Point: your first sentence states what this paragraph will prove. The first E stands for Evidence: a quotation, figure, or concrete example, specific enough to be checked. The second E stands for Explanation: the part students skip most often and the part that earns most. It shows how the evidence supports the point. L stands for Link: one sentence that closes the paragraph and either connects to the next one or returns to the question.

下面是一个可以直接模仿的范例段,题目是"学校是否应该禁止手机"。论点:手机在课间会打断学生的社交练习。证据:我所在的年级在 2024 年做过一次调查,120 名学生中有 78 名表示课间主要用手机而不是交流。解释:这说明手机占用的是学生练习面对面沟通的时间,而这项能力恰恰是小组作业和课堂讨论的基础。衔接:因此,限制课间使用不等于禁止手机,而是把时间还给交流。

Here is a model paragraph on the question of whether schools should ban phones. Point: phones interrupt the social practice that break times are meant to provide. Evidence: a survey of 120 students in my year group found that 78 said they mainly used their phones during break rather than talking to others. Explanation: the phone is therefore taking the exact time students would otherwise spend practising face to face communication, which is the foundation of group work and class discussion. Link: restricting break time use, then, is not the same as banning phones; it hands the time back to conversation.

注意范例中证据的具体程度:年级、年份、人数、比例。KS3 阅卷中,模糊的"很多人都这么认为"几乎不加分,而可核查的细节会直接提升证据一项。

Notice how specific the evidence is: a year group, a year, a number, a proportion. Vague phrases such as "many people think" earn almost nothing at KS3, while checkable detail lifts the evidence mark immediately.

四、段落之间的衔接:让文章走起来

结构感很大一部分来自衔接。三种衔接手段最实用。第一,过渡词:however, therefore, in contrast, furthermore。第二,呼应:下一段的开头回指上一段的结尾关键词。第三,递进:让每一段比上一段更进一步,而不是原地重复。KS3 最常见的结构毛病是"三段并列":三个段落都在说同一个层次的理由,没有推进。

Much of the feeling of structure comes from cohesion, and three devices do most of the work. The first is connectives: however, therefore, in contrast, furthermore. The second is echo: the opening of the next paragraph picks up a key word from the end of the previous one. The third is escalation: each paragraph moves the argument a step further instead of restating the same level of reasoning. The most common structural weakness at KS3 is the flat list, three paragraphs that all make the same kind of point with no progression.

一个简单的自检方法是给每个主体段写一句不超过八个字的摘要,写在段边。如果三个摘要读起来可以互换顺序,说明段落之间没有推进关系,需要重新排序或合并。

A quick self check is to write a summary of no more than six words beside each body paragraph. If those summaries could be shuffled into any order without loss, your paragraphs are not progressing; they need reordering or merging.

让论证更有力的做法是加入让步与反驳。先承认对方最强的一点,再说明为什么你的立场依然成立。例如:有人认为禁止手机会剥夺学生与家人联络的安全感,这个担忧是合理的;但学校可以在办公室提供固定电话与紧急联络渠道,而这不会占用课间交流的时间。这样的段落会把你的文章从"只有一个角度"变成"考虑过多个角度",在结构一项上通常能单独加分。

A concession and refutation paragraph makes an argument noticeably stronger. Admit the best point on the other side, then explain why your position still holds. Someone might argue, for example, that banning phones removes a safety line between students and their families, and that worry is fair; a school can answer it by providing office landlines and a clear emergency channel, which does not consume break time conversation. A paragraph like this moves an essay from single angle to multi angle reasoning, and structure marks usually recognise it directly.

Most weak essays are not written badly; they are planned badly. Here is a five minute method that works for homework and for exams. Minute one: read the question, circle the command word (explain, argue, compare), and underline the limits of the topic so you answer the exact question asked. Minutes two and three: brainstorm every reason you can think of onto rough paper without filtering. Minute four: rank them, keep the two or three strongest, and put them in order of increasing strength. Delete the weak ones rather than squeezing them in. Minute five: attach one piece of evidence to each reason, and if you cannot, leave a gap as a reminder to find it while writing. You now hold a skeleton, and drafting is simply unfolding it.

规划还有一个副作用:它能显著降低写作时的卡顿。有提纲的学生在正文阶段的停顿更少,因为他们不需要边写边想论点。

Planning has a second benefit. It sharply reduces stalling during drafting, because students who hold an outline no longer have to invent arguments sentence by sentence.

Take the phone question again. A complete outline might read as follows. Thesis: restricting where phones may be used works better than a total ban. Reason one: break time conversation is being displaced, supported by the year group survey and explained through lost practice time. Reason two: phones serve no irreplaceable function during lessons, supported by the task list and explained through attention. Reason three, the concession: family contact matters, supported by parent feedback and explained by the alternative channel a school can provide. Conclusion: restrict the setting, keep the contact function. When you draft, you simply unfold each line in order into a PEEL paragraph.

六、常见失分点与考场时间分配

KS3 论文最常见的失分点有五个。第一,引言段复述题目而不给论点。第二,主体段有证据无解释,证据孤零零地挂在那里。第三,段落之间没有衔接词,像五篇小短文拼在一起。第四,结尾段引入新观点,让读者以为文章还没写完。第五,全篇只有一个层次的论证,没有让步与反驳。

Five mistakes account for most lost marks at KS3. First, an introduction that repeats the question instead of making a claim. Second, evidence dropped into a paragraph without explanation, left dangling. Third, no connectives between paragraphs, so the essay reads like five short pieces stapled together. Fourth, a conclusion that introduces a brand new point, which leaves the reader feeling the essay never finished. Fifth, an argument that stays at one level of reasoning with no concession or counter argument.

时间分配上,如果考试给 45 分钟写一篇论文,建议这样切分:5 分钟读题与列提纲,30 分钟写作(引言 5 分钟,两个到三个主体段各 8 分钟,结尾 3 分钟),最后 10 分钟检查。检查时按顺序看四件事:论点句是否回答了题目;每段是否有证据与解释;衔接词是否到位;引号与拼写是否正确。

For timing, if an exam gives you 45 minutes for one essay, split it like this: five minutes reading the question and outlining, thirty minutes writing (five for the introduction, eight for each of two or three body paragraphs, three for the conclusion), and ten minutes checking. Check four things in order: does the thesis answer the question, does every paragraph contain both evidence and explanation, are the connectives in place, and are the quotations and spellings correct.

最后给家长一条建议:批改孩子的作文时,先不看语言,只看结构。把每段的论点句用铅笔圈出来,如果圈不出完整的句子,问题就在结构,而不在词汇量。结构是可以短期训练出来的,语言需要长期积累,先解决能快速见效的那一项。

One final note for parents: when you mark a piece of writing at home, ignore the language first and look only at structure. Underline the topic sentence of each paragraph in pencil. If you cannot find a complete sentence to underline, the problem is structure, not vocabulary. Structure responds to short term training; language takes years. Fix the fast one first.
