OCR GCSE
Genetics is one of the modules where OCR GCSE Gateway Biology candidates most often lose marks: the terminology is dense, the reasoning chains are long, and calculation questions are marked step by step. This article links six core topics, from DNA and genes through alleles and dominance, monohybrid crosses, sex determination and inherited disorders, mitosis and meiosis, and finally mutation and natural selection, with bilingual explanations and answer checklist points for each.
DNA is the molecule of inheritance. It consists of two complementary strands of nucleotides twisted into a double helix. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for the structure of one protein. A chromosome is a thread-like structure formed when DNA coils around proteins, and it is stored in the nucleus. Human body cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, 46 in total: 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes, XX in females and XY in males. Each gene occupies a fixed position on a chromosome called a locus. Examiners expect the relationship to be stated precisely: one chromosome carries many genes, and each gene is only a short length of DNA.
Alleles are different forms of the same gene. For seed shape in peas, for example, there are round and wrinkled alleles. A dominant allele, written with a capital letter, shows even in the heterozygous state, while a recessive allele, written in lower case, only shows when both alleles are the same. Genotype describes the combination of alleles an individual carries; phenotype describes the observable characteristic. Homozygous parents breed true, whereas heterozygous parents produce a 3:1 ratio among their offspring. Definition questions are marked on keywords, so the words allele, dominant, recessive, homozygous and heterozygous must appear in the answer.
以 Aa 与 Aa 杂交为例,配子各为 A 和 a,方格组合为 AA、Aa、Aa、aa,表现型比例为 3:1。
A monohybrid cross follows one pair of contrasting characteristics. Work through four steps: write the parent genotypes, list the gametes, draw a 2x2 grid, and count the offspring ratio. For Aa crossed with Aa the gametes are A and a, giving AA, Aa, Aa and aa, a phenotypic ratio of 3:1. Marks are awarded for the gametes and the completed grid, not only for the final ratio. If the question gives phenotypes and numbers, total them first and work backwards: 300 round to 100 wrinkled is exactly 3:1, so both parents were heterozygous.
Human sex is determined by the sex chromosomes: females are XX and males are XY. Eggs carry only an X chromosome, while sperm carry either X or Y, so the father determines the sex, with roughly a fifty percent chance of each. Sex-linked disorders are usually recessive and carried on the X chromosome, such as red-green colour blindness and haemophilia. A male has only one X chromosome, so a single recessive allele is enough to cause the condition, whereas a female needs two, which is why more males are affected. In a pedigree, squares stand for males and circles for females, affected individuals are shaded, and carriers can be half shaded.
Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells for growth and repair. Meiosis produces four genetically different haploid cells that form gametes. Meiosis involves two successive divisions: in the first, homologous chromosomes separate and the chromosome number halves; in the second, sister chromatids separate. Homologous pairs can swap sections during the first division, producing new combinations of alleles, which is an important source of genetic variation. Comparison questions are marked on four points: the number of divisions, the number of daughter cells, the chromosome number, and whether crossing over occurs.
A mutation is a change in a gene or chromosome that randomly produces a new allele. Most mutations are neutral or harmful, and a few are useful in particular environments. Natural selection can be summarised in five steps: variation exists in the population, resources are limited, the best adapted individuals survive, they reproduce and pass on their alleles, and allele frequencies in the population change. In the case of antibiotic resistance, bacteria that happen to carry a resistance mutation survive treatment and reproduce rapidly, so the population becomes resistant. Answers must use the words mutation, selection and reproduction.
Genetics appears in OCR Gateway as recall in Paper 1 and as applied reasoning in Paper 2. Six-mark questions usually ask you to explain or evaluate, and they are marked point by point, so write three to five short sentences with one point each. In calculations, show the formula, the substitution, the unit and the significant figures. Spelling matters: allele, phenotype, homozygous and heterozygous must all be correct. When a question asks how many genotypes are possible, answer with letter combinations rather than a count of genes. A three-week plan works well: week one for definitions and a mind map, week two for two crosses or pedigrees a day, and week three for past papers from the last five years, sorting mistakes into terminology, reasoning and calculation so that only the error log and keyword list need revising before the exam.
Variation can be continuous or discontinuous. Continuous variation means the characteristic changes gradually across a population, as in height, mass or leaf length; it is usually controlled by many genes and is clearly affected by the environment. Discontinuous variation means the characteristic falls into a few distinct categories, such as blood group, earlobe shape or seed shape; it is usually controlled by a single gene and is little affected by the environment. The causes of variation fall into three groups: gene mutation, the crossing over and independent assortment that happen during meiosis, and environmental factors. Exam questions often ask you to judge whether a characteristic is continuous or discontinuous and to explain why, so you must mention both the number of genes involved and the influence of the environment. Remember that an environmental change that affects only the body and not the gametes is not passed on to the next generation.
Selective breeding means humans choose individuals with desirable characteristics to breed together, as with high-yield dairy cattle or disease-resistant wheat; it is slow, and long-term selection reduces the genetic diversity of the population. Genetic engineering changes the genome directly: a restriction enzyme cuts out the target gene, ligase inserts it into a vector, the vector is transferred into a host cell, and individuals that express the gene successfully are then selected. Genetically modified crops may resist pests or herbicides or contain extra nutrients, and the concern is the possible effect on ecosystems and the spread of genes to wild relatives. Cloning includes cuttings and tissue culture in plants and somatic cell nuclear transfer in animals, where the nucleus of a body cell is placed into an egg cell whose own nucleus has been removed, producing an individual genetically identical to the donor. Comparison questions turn on whether the genes themselves are changed, whether new combinations of alleles appear, and how fast the process is.
The first easily confused pair is gene and allele: a gene is a length of DNA that codes for a protein, while alleles are different versions of that same gene. The second pair is genotype and phenotype: the genotype is the combination of alleles, the phenotype is the observed characteristic, and one phenotype may correspond to two genotypes, since both AA and Aa show the dominant characteristic. The third pair is haploid and diploid: gametes are haploid and carry one set of chromosomes, while body cells are diploid and carry two sets. The fourth pair is the products of the two types of cell division: mitosis gives two diploid cells and meiosis gives four haploid cells. Other frequent mistakes are treating acquired characteristics as inherited, forgetting to state that the mutation already exists before selection acts, and ignoring the possibility of carriers when analysing a pedigree. Circling the key words in a question before choosing which concept to use removes many of these errors.
