IB Psychology ERQ
Introduction: The Extended Response Question (ERQ) in IB Psychology Paper 1 and Paper 2 is where most of the marks for a grade 7 are won or lost. You have roughly 22 minutes to produce a structured, evidence-based essay rather than a list of memorised facts. This guide breaks down the markbands, the five-paragraph framework, how to write introductions and body paragraphs, and the mistakes that quietly cost students the top band. It works for both SL and HL students preparing for the May and November sessions.
Discuss、Evaluate、To what extent
An ERQ is a 22-mark essay question that normally begins with a command term such as Discuss, Evaluate, or To what extent. Unlike a 9-mark SAQ, which needs one study and a direct conclusion, an ERQ requires two to three studies, a visible argument thread, and evaluation of methodology. In short, an SAQ tests whether you can accurately describe one study; an ERQ tests whether you can organise evidence around a position and acknowledge counter-evidence.
The official markbands are cumulative and reward three overlapping levels. Knowledge and comprehension requires accurate terminology and specific study details, such as the sample size, independent variable, and dependent variable, rather than vague statements like research has shown. Analysis and evaluation requires you to discuss internal validity, external validity, cultural and gender bias, and whether studies support or contradict one another. Structure and expression requires an introduction, clearly separated body paragraphs, and a conclusion written in subject terminology. Students who only pile up facts usually plateau at 13 to 15 marks, because the highest-value marks live in the second level.
The safest skeleton is five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The three body paragraphs are not just three random studies; each carries a different function. The first presents the strongest supporting evidence, usually a tightly controlled laboratory experiment that supports causal inference. The second presents another supporting study, preferably using a different method or a different cultural sample, to show the finding is robust. The third introduces counter-evidence or a limitation and then responds to it, explaining why the overall position still holds. Link paragraphs with signposts such as however, therefore, and this suggests so the examiner can see the argument moving forward rather than reading three unrelated summaries.
Your introduction does exactly three jobs in four to six sentences. First, define the key terms from the question; if you are discussing the reliability of memory, define eyewitness testimony and reliability precisely. Second, state the scope of the discussion, for example that this essay focuses on reconstructive memory rather than social factors. Third, state your thesis clearly: this essay argues that eyewitness memory can be distorted under specific conditions but is not as unreliable as popular belief suggests. Avoid irrelevant background stories and avoid stacking up study details, which belong in the body. A strong introduction builds a positive first impression within the first two minutes of marking.
Each body paragraph works best in four steps. First, state its claim in one sentence. Second, describe the study with participants, method, independent and dependent variables, and key numbers. Third, explain how the result supports the claim and offer a mechanism, for example that memory is not a video recording but is rebuilt at every retrieval. Fourth, evaluate the method, naming strengths and weaknesses and explaining how far the weaknesses weaken the conclusion. Take Loftus and Palmer (1974) on leading questions: participants estimating speed gave a mean of about 40.8 mph after reading smashed but about 31.8 mph after reading contacted, and were later more likely to report broken glass that never existed. The result supports the reconstructive view, yet the laboratory setting limits external validity because participants did not experience a real traffic accident.
To reach the top evaluation band, discussing the internal validity of a single study is not enough; compare studies directly. A classic pairing puts a laboratory experiment next to a real-event study. Yuille and Cutshall (1986) followed witnesses of a real shooting in Vancouver and found that four to five months later their recall of critical details was still accurate, with the most stressed witnesses even more accurate on some details. Place the two side by side and you can write a genuinely strong evaluation sentence: the laboratory work suggests question wording can distort detail recall, while the field study suggests that central memory can remain stable under high emotional arousal, so the conclusion must be qualified rather than universal.
Command terms are not decoration; they determine how much evaluation you must write. Describe and Explain questions reward a full account of the mechanism. Discuss requires both supporting and opposing evidence with a balanced judgement. Evaluate requires an appraisal of strengths and weaknesses and a final value judgement, for example that methodological limits reduce the theory's explanatory power across cultures. To what extent requires you to judge degree and define boundary conditions. Writing only supporting evidence for a Discuss question, or describing without judging for an Evaluate question, caps your mark in the middle band even when every study detail is correct.
Five mistakes cost the most marks. The first is describing without evaluating, leaving the whole essay without a single validity judgement. The second is vague study details that cannot name the sample or method. The third is citing second-hand or untraceable sources. The fourth is writing absolute conclusions such as memory is completely unreliable, which is almost always false in psychological argument. The fifth is poor pacing, spending too long on the first two paragraphs and rushing the conclusion into two lines. A practical plan is two minutes for an outline, three for the introduction, four to five for each body paragraph, and three for the conclusion plus a terminology check. By your fifth practice essay this rhythm becomes automatic.
Structure only helps once it is practised under time pressure. In week one, drill introductions only: write three introductions a day from different questions, each in six sentences or fewer, focusing on defining the key terms and stating the thesis. In week two, drill body paragraphs by framing the same study under two different claims until you can write participants, method, numbers, and evaluation without notes. In week three, write the full five-paragraph essay in under 25 minutes, planning in Chinese first and writing in English. In week four, work to a strict 22-minute limit, then review the essay a day later, marking yourself against the three markband levels and rewriting every sentence that describes without evaluating. Four weeks produces roughly sixteen outlines and twelve full essays, enough to cover the most common Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions.
A final reminder: top-band ERQ answers come from writing two or three studies deeply, accurately, and comparatively within a time limit, not from memorising more studies. Apply this framework to your next practice essay, plan the argument in your own language first, then write in English, and you will see that the three markband levels map onto three concrete actions: state the facts, evaluate the evidence, and commit to a judgement.
